I thought I read once that it is a function of whatever coating/tinting that gets you the optimum mix of reflection/insulation/cost, a substance over form type of decision. Could be just the style though, I'm not sure where I picked up the idea.

Another shot fromt eh Swamplot piece.

Unless there was something from the "Foley's Garage" in to the store itself, I don't recall the Americana block being tunnel connected. I could certainly be wrong there.

I like it well enough. Not Spanish Steps level excitement, but a decent replacement. I'm still inerested in what will behappening to the tunnels trans-abatement/demolition, but given the indefinite timeframe, it could be a while before we worry about it.

Looks like they are working through the options on restoring the exterior brick... -
FWIW, Cherry Demolition crews are busy inside the building these days. The first floor looks gutted down to the columns.

Swamplot article... To reach the tunnel, it would need to connect to the BG tower and/or the new Maia @ Texas Hines tower, right?

Downtown seems ok to me, I'm not sure what retail would add to the equation. Is there something intrinsically good about people buying shoes and housewears amidst tall buildngs? Everything has a trade off, and you're not going to be able to plan perfectly for whatever result you desire when we're talking decade long trends. It will shake out however it will, just so long as the process isn't perverted by people with a vision and a line to taxpayer money, I'm fine with it. If I find a better alternative, I'll go there.

I actally tried to join the gym that was located in the building back in late 2009/early 2010. The owner told me that the buildingitself had gone bankrupt and they were being forced out. Domino's and the Christian Scientists stayed for a while at street level for a while after that though. -

Especially with the plywood doing their job for them now. -

So they put up plywood walls in places on the sidewalk. Inerestingly, they covered over the front of the Battelstein's buildng next door. I was not under the impression that it was part of the project, and maybe it is not, but it is interesting that they appear to be using it somehow. -
Looks like they are doing soil testing -

Whatever was under the facade skin on the brick looked really thick, like tar. I doubt it would come off easily. Some of the texture should still show through it after paint. -

I would not have thought that they would still have water pressure serving the building. -
I passed through the HC building in the tunnel yesterday and there were two surveyors with the stick/optical sight instruments (have no idea what they are actually called) down there taking measurements. They are planning something.

Talk about an out of place empty block. Having a supertall like that right there would have changed the entire complexion of DT. Not that I (or anyone apparently) would have wanted to pay for it, but it is fun to imagine how that would look with One Shell, B of A and Wells Fargo all in close proximity.
-
I'm fairly sure it is all one contiguous property. Apart from the corner closest to Jones Hall, the footprint of the Houston Club building/garage pretty much occupies the entire block minus the required setback from the street. Not counting garages, it may be the most fully utilized single building block downtown.

More questions than exclamations, but plenty of each. -
So Gensler put up a display in the lobby of the Pennzoil building with a model of that section of downtown: Since Gensler was connected to whatever is going in the old HC space, and the block in the model is conspicuously bare, I'd say it's plausible that we will see a model of whatever is supposed to be built there in the empty spot in the near future. Unless Gensler wants to promote the empty block they're designing.

That's basically the Magnolia's setup. I would imagine the same. The new garage with Jimmy Johns in it is on the same block. -

Much of the exterior brick looks to be coated with something fairly heavy, like asphalt. Not sure how or if they will be taking that off. Exterior progress is slow. I still walk by there fairly often, but since it has not changed much, I haven't taken any new pictures.
