  1. I matriculated in the motherland from '95 through '01 (two degrees, not two victory laps), and even over that time frame the place changed so much. Since then, new stuff just keeps getting crammed in, which I count as a very good thing. It is an interesting place. Geographically, it should be rural, but you blend in tens of thousands of people from some of the largest metro areas in the nation and switch them out every 4 (or 6) years, step away from the university itself and it gets very rural very quickly, a curious dynamic. I would not have wanted to do college any other way. UT's influence in Austin is definitely there, but it may be 20% of what makes the city what it is, A&M is like 90% of B/CS. As a student, that was awesome.
  2. I think that they are taking out the chunk of the tall portion immediately south of the "new" garage. They have already removed probably 5-6 floors worth of a ~30 foot wide strip completely. After that part is removed, I think that that they are planning to implode the rest of the tall structure between the removed strip and Rusk.
  3. I recognize clearly what you are describing. Once surrounded by valuable development, one can hope that the trashiness gets priced out. There is some nasty stuff going on in more "rural" areas that most people in cities are not exposed to. Parts of Porter are prime examples of the worst of it.
  4. I'll check it on Monday and post up. It may join the Hines lot as the watched pots in the area.
  5. pics taken from one level down from the roof, I was sweating enough as it was...
  6. Exterior being bricked up. Looked like cinder block. Looks like I had my phone in square mode, apologies for getting mostly pole.
  7. It will definitely look pieced together on the interior, but I think it is kind of neat to see the progression of the stadium in its structure. It would have been neat if part of the old first deck could have been integrated, but I understand the other competing priorities.
  8. I thought it was particularly interesting how they took the standard "people in architectural renderings" aesthetic and transferred it seamlessly to video form, the same detached synthetic creepiness was all there only more so.
  9. Walked up on it by accident, would have planned to be out there if I knew they were coming...
  10. They might have tidied up a bit, but the fork loader is stuck in the mud.
  11. Walked by today. I noted that they have installed chain link fencing and protective tarps on the garage thinking perhaps that they might be doing this in preparation for starting work on this tower. But then I saw a guy building a ramp for the construction trailers, so they must be there for a while.
  12. Pallets of bricks, for the sidewalk/street, I presume. Pallets of what looked like tile. Could be wrong though.
  13. Something about a steam shovel. EDIT:
  14. That's encouraging. After the rollout of the KP deal, I had not heard anything and last time I drove by noted no activity. I had no idea VR was as far along as it was. All good stuff, except perhaps in what it portends for my commute.
  15. Like I said in the other thread, the follow-on from Grand Parkway making it to 59 will be interesting to see. The odds that both Kingwood Parc and Valley Ranch get built seem pretty long, this seems like the third guy grabbing for that same bit of value. Maybe there is room for more, I hope so. Interesting to see that they are indicating KW drive to be widened. I thought that got shot down recently.
  16. The interior cranes are out along with nearly everything that was on the ground inside the stadium. Looks like they are prepping the field surface to put grass back in. Aside from the collapse of the old stands, the West side build up next offseason will almost be anti-climatic compared to this expansion, though connecting it all together will be a neat finishing touch. I would love to be there in a packed house for the LSU game on Thanksgiving.
  17. I'm very interested to see how the GP/99 extension over to 59 affects the sprawl. An interesting dynamic will play out in what happens to Porter between this and Kingwood. It has a chance to improve a lot. Hope that it does.
  18. They have blocked off Main completely in front of 806. I'm presuming that they will be doing work on the entryway extending nearly to the street.
  19. I have not heard anything recently, but if it hasn't been posted here, I would not have in any case. It has been a while (and I could go back and look, but haven't yet) but wasn't there supposed to be a garage base that was to be built in "phase 1" upon which the new tower would be built in "phase 2" after the old buildings were restored and had occupants? Stating the obvious from pictures, they are drilling holes for foundation pilings and have the rebar fabbed up to be dropped in, so I'm assuming something is going up in/near the hole in the near future.
