  1. Ironically the one time I went to Savannah my friend vomitted and I had to clean it up. Not sure how you came up with Savannah, its a fine city but not really comparable to New Orleans in regards to culture, food, scene, history, etc.
  2. I'm not going to try to pretend that Bourbon street is clean, but I don't find it that disgusting. Maybe I set my standards pretty low, having been for Mardi Gras, Halloween, New Years. My days of actually partying there are long gone, but last year I took my cousin (22) there for his first trip to NOLA so we had to wander Bourbon. We enjoyed just wandering through, grabbing drinks to go. Pat O'Brien's is a nice place if you need to sit or use the restroom without dealing with the riff raff. They sweep the streets nightly I believe, and try to keep it presentable for the tourists and families during the day. I usually stay and stick around Frenchman Street, and try to make it uptown for a meal and maybe a concert. But always at least just walk through Bourbon to witness some craziness.
  3. For Ellington they are talking horizontal takeoff, the factors you are discussing are factors in vertical takeoff (I will say I don't exactly how they play in to horizontal takeoff). You also left off inclination which plays a bigger factor then orbital velocity. If you want more earth coverage for LEO satellites (or the space station though inclination there was also driven by the russians and soyuz injection) you want to launch at a higher latitude, or take up propulsion to get to that inclination post launch.
  4. Brownsville is really not a spaceport. In the future, it may become one. But it is being built by SpaceX as a private launch site for their use in the immediate future. They have a vehicle to launch today - well its grounded but many around JSC are thinking they will launch again in the first half of 2016. The vision for commercial spaceports are for future customers that don't exist. I'm not completely negative on Houston getting a "license", if something does come of this nationally, we have our foot in the door and be in the forefront.
  5. great, so now I can start at Specs, stumble out of a bar in the area late that night, grab a banana bag from Urgent Care, then pass out at Mattress Firm.
  6. found a pic and little blurb, guess it was a 'yarn bomb' http://www.chron.com/life/article/Yarn-bomb-hits-Buffalo-Bayou-Park-6339450.php
  7. They put up a new "sign" or display piece that says "Buffalo Bayou is back!" with flower cutouts all around it, lots of bright colors and pretty big. Its on the sidewalk railing at the corner of Taft and Allen facing south. Looks like it was either done by the city or a talented 10 year old girl with some resources. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow, it snuck up on me this morning.
  8. They have booths (food, drinks, etc) set up along the east bound side. Some small stages right along the main lanes. Then areas of port-a-poties or other amenities. And its really the only east-west corrider since the hills and grass have the big stages and all the people camped out. So yes the last two years ('13 and '14) Allen Parkway felt quite narrow with the number of concert goers attending. It wasn't bad, but definitely a few bottlenecks every once and a while. At Tinsley we could walk there, so I never bother with Fancy Pants. Being able to go home and get out of the heat in the middle of the afternoon and use the bathroom, grab a few drinks, and head back was key (especially to my wife). I would have still gone this year but our group vetoed and I wasn't that excited about the lineup. Suffers were high on my list. I'll have to catch them some other time... I heard from some kids (maybe teens or young 20s) that the HPD presence was really high. They claim they saw some undercovers arresting a group for smoking pot.
  9. terra002 stated it was going to be residential now. Any confirmation?
  10. I sold my tickets (8 of them). It was pretty easy to sell, I was a little worried when I saw so many people selling after the announcement. But there are still buyers. I am very disappointed, I'd like to be upset with them but I'm sure it was a very hard decision to make. And I'm guessing it was driven by the park itself more than the organizers. They listed safety has a concern which I think is BS. I was out there yesterday and the ground was soft but easily manageable. Last year after a torrential downpour which delayed the start (only because of lightning) it was a mess, exremely wet and muddy and the show went on. I assume the Buffalo Bayou partnership is worried about the damage.
  11. I live one street away. Other then the media circus and police tape that lasted about a day, everyone is still out walking their dogs late in to the evening, going about their business. I think most people are assuming he was targetted for some reason. Hopefully the truth will come out.
  12. Noticed the space on the east end of this building was split in half and they have started working insulation and bare bones type items in the end location. No sign of who will be going in. Nourish is taking up the spot second from the end, so it looks like there will be another tenant at the end. Also Mattress Firm has a bike rack. Very useful (kidding I know its shared for all the retailers but just love that I can walk and bike to another mattress store!).
  13. I don't know the overall median price, we are only looking at older homes ranging from $350 to $450K (depending on amount of renovation). There are several we have seen that are not livable, going for around $400K for the lot value only. Most lot sizes are 5125 sqft, the lots right on the tracks are 5725 sqft. Newer homes (just built) are ranging around $260/sqft, but we're not in the market for those.
  14. Thanks all. We were down there again (Lafayette) and as I walked to Edith I could smell the treatment plan, but a few blocks north seem insulated. There was a decent south wind today too, but I know there are a lot of factors at play. Is it really the Bellaire Public Works plant on Edith that causes the smell, or the sewage plant on Beechnut/Braeswood? We do spend a lot of time outdoors, though not in the peak summer months.
  15. Revamping this topic to get any new opinions. We're thinking about putting an offer in on a house in the east side of Bellaire (east of Newcastle) by the tracks. There is another home farther south (Lafayette) that is not on the tracks but very close to the water treatment plant (supposed smells on occasion though I haven't noticed it the few times we've been looking around there). The one further north near Evergreen is right on the tracks (lot adjacent). Any thoughts?
  16. Not really related to future, but entertaining news about activity at the Astrodome: http://www.chron.com/houston/article/Three-men-share-photos-taken-after-sneaking-into-6151420.php
  17. Any news here? I also saw the empty lot catty corner from this (NW corner) has a small for sale by owner sign. I've only seen it used a few times charging people for parking during events like FPSF.
  18. Variance request going forward today. I took this picture last week. I missed this thread and was really confused when I saw 'Midtown'. thought i made a wrong turn on my bike!
  19. I'm hoping the Mattress Firm sign on the corner is temporary. They have much high quality lighted signs above their door. The one on the corner was the first thing up, before they even started real work on the inside. We'll see...
  20. Nourish Juice Bar now has signage up on the spot east of Mattress Firm. Seems like large square footage for a juice bar...
  21. This has been up since December but i forgot to post. Pizzaros painted sign on the W Gray side. Also saw a few weeks ago that two large pizza ovens were brought in. They are slowly working on the inside.
  22. Grand opening of the dog park on Saturday http://365thingsinhouston.com/2015/01/08/buffalo-bayou-dog-park-opening-johnny-steele-dog-park-houston/
  23. No those were still up as of yesterday.
  24. Pizaro's has a new bigger sign up but didn't see any obvious progress on the inside. Still no idea what is going in the east most part of the building.
