    Of course not, you dont seem like the trigger happy, gun-slinging, Annie Oakley type. This breed is commonly seen further down Telephone @ Tel Wink Grill and beyond all the way to Hobby Airport. Swanky joints like The Blue Cat Club, the Oriental Lounge, et al, appeal to some of our cowboys that pull into town on occasion. The wild, wild Southwest as they call it in these here parts. Like the old saying goes " For every broken beer bottle & curb on Telephone Road, there's a broken heart". Bang, bang, Yeehah!

    All along Harrisburg or Telephone Rd. Bullet proof vest not included. But seriously if that person is dying for a drink and company just head to Midtown. At least he/she will have a choice of pretty women, unless prefers that Harrisburg/Telephone kind of gal/thing, etc.

    That all depends who and where you have them made. Materials range depending where you buy. I actually drove all the way to San Antonio this past weekend to have our favorite and most gifted seamstress to make several historical/tradional baroque period 16th century costumes. Get the right person and your hooked.

    It's for the best. That spot was way too crowded and minimal parking. They may be the ones more than happy to leave. I bet they have a super loyal clientel that will follow them anywhere in town. Gottaget recent pics of this area.

    Now all the protests and picketing will be moved to the Near East End. Gotta love it. I see this topic headed straight for the "controversial" section of Haif. Midtown must have got fed up with the ongoing protest's from local churches so they send it our way. I see no end in sight. On a positive note, everyone passing by on the Gulf frwy headed out of downtown will have a great view of all the hoopla below. Media will have a field day. Santo cielo!

    What is interesting to note is that the actors at the Renaissance are exactly that and they pull it off quite well. I was told and I think its on the website that they pull from local universities and anywhere people want to join in to be part of the show. I met a girl here locally that said she participated a couple of times. Said it was one of the most fun experiences ever. Most of the costumes are made by very experienced and talented I might add, seamstresses that use historical resources to get the medieval period outfits down to the very detail. Bravo!

    Boris always does a fantastic job! This one of the coolest festivals ever, just love the this era in time. We just had a very similar themed event in Houston a month ago. I should post those pics on Haif. That event was an homage to Spain's baroque era or rather a commemoration of Columbus' discovery of the Americas. Observed all the pageantry resulting from the historical event when Columbus' ventured into the New World & was financed through the royal court of Queen Isabella de Castilla and King Fernando de Arag

    Try doing a search under her name. We did discuss briefly about a year ago. I too often wondered which one of the homes was hers. She had quite an unusual life but found Houston as her permanent home. I remember seeing Laura late, late one night as a kid and it was a most peculiar film.     That same bldg is discussed in East End section under structures past & present I think? I also remember seeing the frat logo hanging above the entry in the 80', 90's? Sure is almost exact image of famed Animal House and it probably was. Forest Hill is a one of a kind neighborhood which must have been built up in the cities true heyday. Very similar to the old and once beautiful nabes in Dallas. Newcomers should BUY/live here.

    Background music has been around for as long as retail has been around. Its really interesting to read how its been used (among hundreds of other gimics) to SELL. I recall reading that some big stores play upbeat music to get you (pshyched) into feeling more happy hence you feel better about spending $$$. I am guilty of such trappings especially around the holidays. When we used to go to Foley's at lunch time, become fixated like little lemmings heading out to sea and head for the Tree display area, holiday music gets cranked and we start spending. I robot. I personally love walking into a salvage/antique store and they play swing era music on a victrola and it gets you "In The Mood" to buy more junk, It works! It will be sooooo cool to go to HEB one day and they have a hard core band playing out front. Imagine a mosh pit in full swing as you head for the veg dept?

    I could not believe the last Saturday they were playing Ball of Confusion. Was it Love & Rockets that made it famous in the 80's? I could swear I could smell the aroma of cloves or was it Maui Wowee? HEB is becoming more like Number's Friday night 80's night. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Then the went into some Yaz!

    That seems like just yesterday We knew a neighborhood kid that bit an apple with a razor blade in it. It barely grazed his lip and had the scar to prove it. My bros/sis & pals stopped trick or treating around 74 anyway. We also felt too big for it. I do feel sorry for todays kids they miss out on the real fun way of doing things around holidays. Kids today are just forced to become adults way too soon (new topic). They probably trick or treat "online" scary too.

    Glad we slammed down that chilled vino at the Open House event, at least that wasn't wasted. Now we can start a topic on "What was to be, but never amounted to do, do" Houston once again it's cry wolf...Rat's! and all we got was a rock.

    Well, I was at Stephen F Austin (on other side of town) inlate 70's. However, its possible we would see her at the city gatherings I mentioned above. My teacher was Ms Blaha, late 20's & she was a Debby Harry look-a-like, mini skirt and all. DECA had an array of crazy students, most seemed straight as an arrow but would light up at any given moment. Kind of like Catholic school students would do. The w i d e photo I have had about 1,000 students/faculty but you can see faces quite clear. Wow I really need to scan and cut it out right! I miss those fun, carefree days. As a final nice comment I can say that Westbury was always regarded as one of the finest and best schools in Houston. I am quite serious on that, today its another story I'm afraid.

    Yep, that's the exact same story I heard in the car the other afternoon. and to note that when the recent Ike storm passed, will we ever know if other remains were washed out to sea forever? ...even 35 yrs later. Something else occurred to me the other day, when this happened there was no internet, these freaks just cruised around & either coersed or grabbed them against will or met at bars. Now predators simply go online. Scary indeed. Finally, who would think just years in the future another one emerged Jeff Dahmer.

    All of this makes perfect sense. Midtown seems to be mostly focused on a "Friend's or Greg & Darma" crowd. The Galleria has historically been known to attract a Zsa Zsa Gabor type crowd, used to anyway. Maybe they should have called this Faulty Towers and with a mostly British clientele. lol PS, I want to take home that little model Travelguy mentioned as a souvenir too.

    I truly feel compelled to make note on "Distributive Education Careers of America", did I get that right? or D.E.C.A. as it was known. I was in it for 2 years circa 1978-1979 we would go to an annual competition or banquet and sometimes compete with other high schools so Westbury must have been one of them? Here is some real trivia, does anyone recall ever going to a DECA meet at the then brand new Westwood Mall? around 1978-79? Oh my God, I have many pics of our group 11th & 12th graders in blue blazers and the girls had blue plaid skirts. My mom actually made some of the guys blazers for us. I also have the very large and wide photo of that annual banquet where all the schools DE classes attended in the Astrodome banquet hall??? I cant even remember but its engraved on the bottom right and I had some pals sign the back. We were all seated at the large table up front by the speakers. Wow I should have created a topic just about DE - Distributive Education. Still have my buttons and pins that have DECA. I worked at Gulfgate Mall while going to 12th grade. This was a real flash back!

    They really need to have a Chase Bank location here. There was only an ATM in that Exxon and it was always broken down. I am quite happy to hear of these new retailers, however it will become more gridlock and loitering from the usual street people and adding to the hanging out will be the (ongoing major eyesore bus depot) just down the street at Telephone/S Wayside. The sad truth is this very, very busy intersection (45/Wayside) is a very fast moving area. Cars simply cannot stop at the drop of a pin when passing thru so when the autos in front of them stop to turn into these new establishments it will be crash, boom, bam. You see it almost daily further down as they turn into Dot's, Home Depot, and the barbecue place. The best thing they can do is post a very large neon sign at these new places stating that anyone hanging around will be $ fined, etc. FYI, that old McDonald's should have been leveled yrs ago and perhaps moved back further and built as a 2 level mega-McDonald's and leave out a playground. It became more of a school play yard yrs ago. There is a great example of a non-play ground McDonald's over here in Westchase District. It is state of the art. Can we see anything like that being built in Near East End? I know dream on.

    Error correction: I thought there was another Doubletree being built on East side of town. So what they are doing is just making a new addition to the present Doubletree right? A walkway will be such a positive. Crossing those streets in that area can be very dangerous. I guess the link above has no renderings?

    All of this brings back bad memories of those days. The media couldnt get enough of it and kept broadcasting to the world, especially here. The timing was even worse because the films like Tx Chainsaw all started coming out at theaters. There was a short story just yesterday afternoon on KUHF around 4:15 that discussed the recent identification of a person thru DNA and there is a good possiblity that other unknowns will be identified. Its those poor parents on film I really pity since many have since passed away and never found out what became of their missing kids. What have we learned from this? How do you alert the next young generation?

    I knew it was toooooo good to be true. Oh well, glad I at least got to tour the model (little movie set). I can hold on to the beautiful brochure as a What Could Have Been souvenir.

    Doubletree's are normally very modern and elegant indeed, but I wonder what will become of the other one on West side of downtown? Remain open? Perhaps best way to see any renderings would be to search the developer or architect firm that is creating it? or even Doubltrees main website. Hotels usually show new projects slated all over the world. www.doubletree.hilton.com
