  1. Water mains are buried fairly deep. Here's the 70+ year old 8 inch main that runs through our front yard when it had a leak about 10 years ago
  2. The house actually looks better in person than in the pictures, at least for the exterior. The siding isn't as shiny or glaring when you see it from the street, and the orange and yellow from the light isn't visible at all. Unfortunately, it's not a great location, being the NE corner of 11th and TC Jester, with the garage on 11th.
  3. And Nextdoor is awash with people who are mad about more apartments. What the heck did they think would get built there?
  4. The food served to Methodist patients is awful, though. Or was when I spent a week there in 2021. All I could eat were fruit cups and pancakes.
  5. I spent 9 days in MD Anderson, and don't recall any of my visitors mentioning a bag check.

  9. That stadium at Rice is the old stadium that's now the Track and Field stadium. You can see the fairly unique straight 220 track going back under the trees at the top left of the facility. I'm really wishing I had taken a bunch of pictures in the mid-70's over there.

The Harry Walker photographic negatives come from the architectural papers of Burdette Keeland. Through his wife, Keeland acquired a collection of negatives owned by Harry Walker (the presumed photographer), who was married to Mrs. Keeland’s aunt. The negatives record Walker’s life growing up in Beaumont, Texas and his adult life after his move to Houston in the late 1910s. Of particular interest are photographs of Walker’s home at 1914 Bissonnet in Houston, with views of the area that includes Poe Elementary School when the neighborhood was new in 1929. Historical shots of Houston show Rice University, Hermann Hospital, the Houston Ship Channel, the San Jacinto Monument, the San Jacinto Trust Company, and downtown Houston in the snow in 1925. Viewers of the collection can also get a thorough immersion in the daily life of the era through scores of photographs of babies, children, families, laborers, and sailors in uniform. The images highlight the time period’s dress and furniture, interiors and exteriors of homes, and modes of transportation such as horse-drawn wagons, cars, ships, tractors, and trains. Examples of leisure activities captured on film include horseback riding, baseball, poker, swimming, fishing, bingo, hunting, picnics, and many other outdoor gatherings.   12. I think it will be months before any real conversion work is done. The building needs to be gutted first, and all of the asbestos removed. I know the walls were designed to be easily moves, so that may be simpler than for other buildings. The building has a basic floor size of 28,000+ sq ft, so it should be fairly easy to get 10-20 units per floor. I haven't seen any real diagrams of proposed layouts.
  13. That's probably about the time the Corps of Engineers was working on straightening and concreting the bayous. Great picture.
  14. 2016 is a condominium, so that monthly fee includes all of the money that needs to be saved for future maintenance. The stuff that keeps the building from collapsing. That's similar to fees in other buildings I've looked, which is by no means a comprehensive look.
  15. None of their comparisons show pre-expansion times. I haven't found the data for pre-expansion times yet, but I'm still looking.
  16. Those signs should be easy to remove, since they are part of TMC. The signs that are hard to remove are the large signs businesses erect. If you tear down one of those, you ahve to go through the entire permitting process again, but if you leave it, it's grandfathered and doesn't have to follow all the newer rules.
  17. That location would be under the Southwest freeway on the East side of Kirby now. Historic aerials shows that as a large open lot in 1957 and freeway in 1962
  18. I'm pretty sure that it was later the Shamrock 6. Went to a movie there in 1979, and my girlfriend had her purse snatched in the parking lot.
  19. When I drove past there today, they were outlining a median that will block left turns from 11th onto Dorothy from either direction. That's been my experience as well, other than some delays where construction activities are taking place. Yesterday, I drove down Studewood from Cavalcade, then turned on 11th heading West., No issues, other than the parents picking up their kids at Field creating a backup there, but that's a Studewood issue.
  20. There is nothing to indicate the property has been sold. As of yesterday(January 12) there are no recorded property transfers on the County Clerk's site.
  21. Some of those side streets have stop signs almost every block, which is a disincentive for cyclists. And, part of the RoW is consumed by drainage ditches, which the City has shown no interest in replacing.
  22. There's a new No Left Turn sign westbound on 11th at Dorothy. It's a little hidden behind the bus stop sign. I noticed that yesterday. I really hope that as part of the Shepherd/Durham work they put a triangle median on 10th at Shepherd that stops people from crossing there to get to or from Kroger.
