  1. Or yet another halfway house for men in Midtown.
  2. I wondered if it had been sold. There's a bunch of homeless folks living in it, climbing in and out of the front window. Which probably means the interior is a sewer. The windows won't be long for this world. The one they use for an entrance is broken out. I wouldn't be surprised if it burns down when someone lights a fire to stay warm.
  3. First Houston Country Club course was on Dallas, then San Felipe Road. It latrer moved to the site where Gus Wortham is now. There was a par 3 course at Stella Link and Main, and another at Witte and Old Katy.
  4. Here's the article http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/life/main/5361630.html Section E is Life on the web site Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...p;z=19&om=1
  5. I've seen a map somewhere that shows where Hatahway and Westheimer came together was a rail line. i'll ahve to see if I can find that again, as it clearly shows the reason for the disjointed effect. It may be on the 1913 map. T C Jester was the pastor of the Baptist Temple on 20th. Apparently, they named the street after him when he died.

    Qatar Airways

That's great news. I fly to Qatar several times per year, and the stops in Europe are a pain. Qatar Air's business class is outstanding, and there is a separate terminal in Doha for outward bound Business and First CLass passengers. Truly great service.
  7. There's also a Wachovia on Sawyer by the new Target. They are getting as bad as CVS.
  8. The Shepherd Street bridge over White Oak Bayou used to have a plaque calling it Erie Street Bridge. The plaque disappeared when they rebuilt the bridge. I have a small hope that someone takes those and puts them in a warehouse somewhere for posterity, rather than just junking them.
  9. I would hate to see Timbergrove without the trees. Drive through tge hsection that's South of 11th between TC Jester and Durham, and you will understand the importance of the trees.
  10. Send a note to CVS Corporate offices nad tell them you will shop at Walgreens because there's no security at the Midtown CVS. That should get thier attention, especially if you tell them that your neighbors feel the same way. I'm in the Randalls regularly to pick up after school snacks for my son. It's way better since they have full time security. when it opened, you always got hit up for cash. Of course by the time it opened, we had lived in Midtown for a few years and I was pretty good at getting rid of panhandlers.
  11. I haven't been to Dubai, but hav espent a bunch of time in Doha, Qatar watching buildings under construction. In Doha, they use a bunch of steel in the concrete. Inch and a half and bigger in some cases. Teh concrete pours seem well planned and the concrete looks good when it's finished. Engineering is done by firms that seem to know what they are doing/ Biggest hit on the building process is that some contractors treat their employees as expendable, and lax safety habits seem rampant - like seeing guys on the tops of cranes without fall arrest gear. I imagine Dubai is similar.
  12. We live fairly close to Candelaris and go there regularly, but I still prefer Romanos. Romanos is great pizza!
  13. I always forget about those block books being online, and the Sanborn maps are available with a library card. Thanks for looking htis up!
  14. The white mansion at Austin and Elgin was much more attractive when it wasn't white. It was painted when we were living in Midtown, some time around 2000 or 2001.
  15. OT question. Why is the street that runs off Bissonet towards Shadyside called W 11th Place?
  16. Great, another giant tower built on fill in West Bay. My first trip to Doha was in 2002, and there was very little construction in West Bay. The largest building then was City Centre Mall, which looked like a giant box rising out of the plain. Fast forward to my last trip a few weeks ago, and there's a bunch of construction. Traffic is bad, safety is laughable. The buildings are nice once they are completed, but getting there is a challenge. Doha is the city that had a tower under construction burn. Twice. The second time, the fire spread to the neighboring building. The buidings seem well built. Lots of rebar and concrete. The Gate project was pouring foundation sections up to 20 feet thick.
  17. There used to be apartments there that were pretty popular in the 70's. There are a couple of folks at work who said they lived there when they moved to Houston in the early 80's. I am not surewhat's going in there, though.
  18. Kroger for most things - the one on 11th is almost within walking distance. We occasionally go to the Randalls at Shepher and Westheimer, and Central Market when we are looking for better produce and meat. The Kroger on West Gray has better stuff than the Kroger on 11th. We've been told the 11th street store is due for renovation and expansion, but haven't seen any signs of it.
  19. Ambulances don't speed up until they get out of the neighborhood. In a neighborhood, they keep the speed down. Hence, no delays.
  20. Tehre's a speed hump right in front of our house. we are happy it's there, as the folks who live in the townhomes at the end of the street had a bad habit of driving well over the speed limit until the humps were installed. now, they are more reasonable. The humps don't cause any problems for emergency vehicles in our neighborhood - my wife had to take an ambuolance ride a while back, and there were no delays. Like any other tool , there are places where humps are appropriate, and places where they aren't. There are no one size fits all answers here.
  21. LarryD, no one who is trained will try to shoot someone in the leg "so he would drop and could be cuffed"' That just doesn't work in real life. When a police officer feels threatened enough to shoot someone, he will aim at the cnter of mass and shoot until the person is no longer a threat. Usually, that results in the death of the suspect. Sad, but that's life. Shootings should definitely be well investigated, and the officer punished if the act was not justified. However, no public good is served by the racist spewings of Quanell Ten and his ilk, other than raising their own profiles at the expense of the victims.
  22. A lot of the houses in Montrose have basements. I've been in several on avondale, and there's several on Lovett and Courtlandt. Keeping them dry is a big issue, and the cost to waterproof a 100 year old basement is high. The basements were the original area for furnaces and water heaters.
  23. Which law prohibits taking pictures of a power plant? Or a refinery? or a chemical plant? Anything you can see from a publicplace, you can photograph. If a military installation prohibits photography, there will be signs.
  24. We've used # Men Movers about 6 times for various moves, from one house to another and to move things from a house to storage and back. Always on time, polite, and very careful with the furniture. They always took the time to figure out how to get something up or down stairs, and never hit the walls, even on stairs that make a U-turn.
  25. That looks like the same kind of chopper that put all the stuff on top of the new Enron/now Chevron building a few years back. Beats trying to find a crane that can go that high.
