  1. I rode by the studio today and the giant Beatles statues seem to be about complete. It's kind of funny to see them. I hope Addickes is able to move them to the Shepherd - I10 location. It would give them a lot of visibility.
  2. It doesn't appear to be unsafe at all. The 5-door Civic has an NCAP rating of 4/5 for occupant protection.
  3. The Versa looks pretty nice. I think read that it has as much rear room as a Camry. It does show that Renault influence. The Honda Fit might be worth looking at also. Four-door hatchbacks are so practical, it's surprising in a way that so few are available. I can't believe they don't sell that Civic 4-door hatchback here - the sedan the US gets is so dowdy compared to it.
  4. I don't have a picture, but a few years ago I went to a party in a house in Conroe in which the living room was a huge open area shaped like Texas. They had a wet bar up in the panhandle. Very odd, but the owner was very proud of it.
  5. I've said it before - building in a "similar style" isn't preservation. It's just decoration. They're basically hoping that people will confuse the two. It is as meaningless a stylistic gesture as was the fake movie marquee where the Village Theater used to be.

    macing dogs

Any biker knows what it is like to be chased by loose dogs. I have had some good results with Windex in a squirt gun.
  7. Thank you sir, done. Btw, "Going Up" is not meant as the default location for all new topics.
  8. According once again to the Downtowner, in 1940 the HPD was on the southeast corner of Caroline and Preston.
  9. I realize it was built in the bust of the 1980s, but I'm not sure if I would consider that an excuse or not. Unfortunately, ugly buildings can come in any economic climate. Thanks for the interior shot. It shows that grubby plastic whatever-it-is by the main escalators. What were they thinking? Last time I was there I thought the interior was looking a little ragged in spots. Given the budget design and construction, I would expect it to start showing its age soon.
  10. Just picked this up today. It is a short but very well illustrated look at Houston's growth after WW2 and local modern residential architecture. Very nice!
  11. I shouldn't have been making unkind remarks about her. I do have a grudging admiration for her determination and willingness to fight.
  12. While the GRB at least made a stab at mid-1980s post-modern stylishness, this monstrosity was ugly from the word go. The ugly plain exterior is offset by a tacky, low-quality interior, highlighted by a strange plastic "sculpture." At least the front facade of the Wortham is partly hidden from the street by the trees in the plaza in front.
  13. A friend remembered the name of the place at Windsor Plaza I was trying to remember: Cooters. It was huge, but kind of scuzzy. Anyone ever go to Boardwalk Beach Club on Washington? For a while they put sand on the floor for the complete beach experience. Another club we couldn't remember the name of was in the strip center at the southwest corner of Chimney Rock and Westheimer. I believe it had a rep as a place for the suburban kids when they drove into the city.
  14. The trusty Downtowner map shows the location of the fire station across from the criminal courts building.
  15. Anyone else been there? I think it might be fairly new. It seems to have some potential to pick up from the late Diedrichs on Westheimer. The music isn't as obnoxious as Starbucks, but I don't know if they have wifi.
  16. Yes, I suppose so. I'm not for Free Trade, and I'm not for protection I approve of them both, and to both have objection In going through life I continually find It's a terrible business to make up one's mind So in spite of all comments, reproach and predictions I firmly adhere to unsettled convictions.
