  1. I don't know. They left the 1000 block of Main Street remain as surface parking for like 15 years after the Lamar was demolished. I kind of foresee the same fate for the Chronicle structures.
  2. Yes, Bank of America is a large tenant in the tall building. That was originally the Fannin Bank Building and dates from I believe mid-1960s.
  3. With all of the new residential coming in a Trader Joe's would absolutely kill along Dallas. Plus they utilize a small footprint so they could probably squeeze in. I could also see something along the lines of a deli working.
  4. If the name were to be changed, the usual cynical street renaming ploy would be to call it a "parkway". Seriously, I have a hard time believing a new name would do much to change its prospects.
  5. Do you have a link to the article? I'd love to see it. It's not surprising at all that the owners would start pushing to replace Reliant after 20 years. That's pretty much standard operating procedure nowadays (ask the folks in St Louis, if you don't believe me).
  6. I have never seen any particular reason why profitability should be a consideration for railroads, airports, roads, fire departments or other any infrastructure. Why should railroads be held to a standard of private ownership and profitability that isn't applied to other infrastructure? Infrastructure is what taxes are for.
  7. Why? I can't see any screaming need to do so. Renaming Calhoun Saint Joseph "Parkway" was a silly mistake; why repeat it?
  8. I think Lincoln probably see it as a bold move to bring back the Continental name rather than an alphanumeric code. Luxury car manufacturers follow their crowd very closely in everything, so if Mercedes and BMW are going to use alphanumeric names then every other luxury car brand will as well. Just like they all feel obligated to have analog clocks, and LED lights lining the headlights etc etc.
  9. It's hard to think of any facade remodeling that actually improves things; but even by that low standard this one is pretty nasty.
  10. I don't know. What's suddenly the rush? After having sat vacant for a dozen years another decade isn't going to hurt anything. Maybe that will be enough time for someone to figure out a plausible use for the thing.
  11. The design of the residential tower seems a bit sad sack to me, but that said it's great to see more high rise development near the Med Center. Btw I love that aerial shot of the Med Center!
  12. Guys, this has wandered too far off topic. Please address future posts in this topic to the topic.
  13. I think there should be a bad brick, or a brick-through-the-window award for the most egregious preservation failures in a given year. I hereby nominate Incarnate Word Academy and the Houston Club Building.
  14. Please tell me this is some kind of bizarre joke. The Public Storage analogy is so apt. This is so ugly and cheap-looking.
  15. Ah, thanks. I didn't realize that the garage took up the entire block. So it will end up as large parking garage with a very grand lobby, for a parking garage.
  16. Given the central location, I could see the new structure also incorporating a prominent street-level gateway to the tunnel system (via 1111 Travis and 1010 Lamar). People have always said that the tunnel system needs more of an interaction with the street, and given the proximity to two hotels and the light rail and the desire to foster a retail district on Dallas, this seems one location where it could be pulled off (the Louisiana-Walker-Milam-McKinney block would be better, but that's another story).
  17. Like that's a bad thing? Car designers steal from other cars all the time; often much more blatantly than this (eg original Lexus LS and Mercedes S-Class). Actually I like the design because it avoids the semi-fastback with hofmeister kink look that practically every car manufacturer has adopted in recent years. It's nice to see a return of the trunk. I think it gives the car more presence, especially for a luxury car.
  18. And the funny thing is that Lexus has been trying to back away from its luxo-cruiser image and come off as more sporty.
  19. I know. It makes my nose bleed just thinking about it. Since it's just a parking garage in the rear section, what are they going to do with the half-block facing Capitol? Surface parking? What about the tunnel connections to Chase Tower?
  20. Pleasantly surprised by the Continental, except for the wheels which I think are trying to hypnotize me. I'm glad that Lincoln realized that there is a perfect niche out there for them. They don't have to run after Audi and BMW like Cadillac is trying to do, when they can practically own the luxo-barge segment. Now that they have a rear-wheel platform for the Continental, a revived Town Car is the obvious next step. What's interesting here is that the focus isn't on the driving experience, it's on rear seat room and comfort. They need to offer rear side window privacy curtains as an option!
  21. Not really. Traditional large downtown department stores are a dying breed. I can't imagine that any one of the remaining department stores would take the risk that this location entails.
  22. It looks like they envision demolition of the old building. The requirement for glass area at the streetscape level probably makes re-use impractical.
  23. You're absolutely right on the similarity - good catch!
  24. It might be more impressive if they didn't misspell "Bogart".
