  1. I think it's really interesting to see where they are going with this design. As built, the Village Arcade was a somewhat heavy-handed attempt to forklift the Village to a more "upscale" retail district. Given the location close to the Med Center and West U this probably wasn't an unreasonable goal. As such, the design was the perfect paradigm of 1990s bourgeois respectability that we saw in thousands of strip centers across the country. It looks like with the upgrade they are reaching for something a little more creative, although not to the degree that would frighten off wealthy shoppers from the neighborhood. It may just be that the existing design just looks old-fashioned to today's target market. I suppose that with River Oaks District, the Galleria re-do and the redevelopment on Kirby, that the Village really needs to up its game if it wants to continue to appeal to a desirable demographic.
  2. I didn't realize they planned them so far out, but it makes perfect sense. They want to be in place for the next real estate development upswing, just like with 609 Main for this one.
  3. This building is generic enough to accomplish the trick of looking like it's always been there even when it's under construction. I literally walked right past without even noticing it.
  4. Sounds reasonable. Thanks for a very informative post. As you say, surface parking seems a likely outcome for a while to come. It wouldn't be the first time they have used blocks for parking for extended periods.
  5. The reason I think so is that the market for downtown high-rises seems constrained at the moment. Capitol Tower is uncertain, and 6 Houston Center and International Tower were cancelled for the time being. Hines has purchased property for long-term development in the past and sat on it, so it doesn't seem that unlikely a scenario. All that said, I would also love to see another residential high-rise in the vicinity.
  6. I think what we are going to be seeing here for the foreseeable future is surface parking.
  7. Correct. As an aside, the Texaco building was another site with a series unsuccessful development proposals before one actually came together.
  8. If it's cancelled, that would be the third project at that site to go away.
  9. Tesla Model X, with the doors.
  10. Here's Lower Main St in the 1990s in all its glory. Not a great shot of the street itself however.
  11. The streets were numbered thus because they connected the built freeways around downtown. It would have been useful to drivers to know how to connect between segments.
  12. I thought it was interesting because it was right around that time when a lot of businesses and retailers started to leave downtown. Five years later I think downtown was a lot more vacant.
  13. Great video, although very sad. Shamrock souvenir song sheet, St Patrick's Party, 1987:
  14. Same here. I love this project, although the 5700 underground parking spaces concerns me adjacent to the bayou.
  15. I always thought this would work for apartment-like housing for seniors.
  16. When I was by I noticed workers as well in the garage section. Looked like some sort of plumbing/sewerage work since there was water flowing out. A Sheraton would be great, but after so many false alarms on this one I'm not keeping my fingers crossed.
  17. I don't think parking garages are ever going to be particularly attractive. I would just like to seem them clustered in the downtown Parking District.
  18. How can a candle be "high end"? Is it because it has two wicks? Common lowlife that I am, I had never even heard of Moncler until this very moment.
  19. I think Bentleys are usually some of the most beautiful cars around, but I'm lukewarm on the SUV. The light circles near the headlights seem a bit fussy. The Prius on the other hand just looks strange.
  20. I think the monorail idea was part of the original Houston Center development plan, and was abandoned decades ago.
  21. We can only hope that Smisek is smothered in lawsuits.
  22. I think they're still plugging away on the interior. From what I can see peering through the windows, it doesn't look bad.
