  1. Lost power late Monday/early Tuesday, probably around 1:00-2:00 am. Came back on at 11:00 pm Tuesday night for three hours before going out again. Back on again Wednesday afternoon around 4:00 and so far holding steady. It was 43 inside the house according to the thermostat when power was restored - definitely one of the downsides of a 75 year old pier-and-beam house with a lot of large, single-glazed windows. I think this was probably worse than a week-long post-hurricane power outage in August, and I've lived through a couple of those. But I'm sure those who grew up in the North might have a different opinion.
  2. That's got to be a rarity. Can't imagine too many of them survived in decent shape given their target market of people wanting a new car at a used-car price.
  3. Well, specifically in this thread, it appears there were more than a few "hit and run" posters who only posted a handful of times after registering and then never visited the board again.
  4. Also, the rows of metal barns aren't climate-controlled, nor are they typically elevated above ground level. Depending on what is being stored, both of those things can be significant issues in a flood-prone city with brutal summers that last half the year.
  5. My most distinct memory of the 1989 deep freeze is driving very carefully through the Rice Village/Med Center area on my way to pick up my GF's sister from work, and realizing while stopped at a stop sign that the car was slowly but inexorably sliding toward the curb on a thin layer of ice.
  6. As college costs have escalated to stratospheric levels, so have students' expectations of housing and dining amenities. The current Rice serveries full of chefs whipping up a wide variety of very good food are far removed from the cafeteria ladies who dished out countless portions of cheese eggs and mystery meat back in the 1980s. That said, given the age and condition of Old Sid, I doubt many Sidizens are going to be complaining about the spartan nature of New Sid. Also, there used to be a tradition of often-elaborate buildouts to further enhance residential rooms (particularly among engineering students). Assuming this is still the case, I have no doubt that the folks with such inclinations will regard the rooms at New Sid as merely a blank canvas rife with possibilities.
  7. Hermann Park, October 1976, and a diagram of the location near the Zoo entrance. (source: http://thesecret.pbworks.com/w/page/103626363/Image 8 Verse 1 Solution)
  8. The car-hating twitterati who are convinced that "oversized" pickups and SUVs are deliberately designed to kill pedestrians and cyclists would like a word with you.
  9. Rip Van Tagger must've just awakened from the proverbial 20-year nap, if the closure of Disco Kroger was the tipping point that prompted him to whip out his arsenal of paints and declare Montrose dead.
  10. I'd like to see the Chronicle try to explain the nickname "Cruisey Kroger" like they did "Disco Kroger". It would probably be as entertaining as their style guide's stodgy insistence on rendering a certain infamous Texas band's name as the "BH Surfers".
  11. Probably just a coincidence. At least until B&H Photo announces a hostile takeover of the Ion, setting in motion a close-quarters throwdown between NYC retail giants in the mean streets of Houston.
  12. El Paraiso moved to a much smaller location in a Northside strip center near Irvington and Cavalcade. I haven't driven by there recently, but they haven't updated their Facebook page in months after announcing a "temporary closure" around the middle of last year. When they moved, I wondered if they owned the property and just decided it was time for a change, or if they'd been forced out by increasing rent. HCAD indicates it's been owned by the same person/entity since 1988 (the default earliest date displayed in their online records).
  13. I'm wondering what will become of the large freestanding concrete-and neon Sears sign fronting the N. Shepherd store. All of the other signage was removed shortly after the store closed, but that one is still present. It would be nice if it could be preserved, it's absolutely iconic and has been an area landmark for decades.
  14. Indeed. It always reminded me of the quirky businesses that used to be plentiful in Montrose in the 70s and 80s but are practically extinct now. Many of those were likewise operating out of old houses.
  15. It's the combined effect of the pink columns with the adjacent neon-green brickwork that is truly heinous.
  16. Yeah, my first thought upon seeing it was "hey, the Ashby neighborhood-eating monster has relocated to the Heights!" My second thought was "I can't believe so many people on Nextdoor are just now hearing about this", before remembering that the overlap between vociferous Nextdoor posters and HAIF members is presumably quite small.
  17. Chrome: click the "three dots" menu at the upper right corner, then select More tools > Clear browsing data. Make sure "Cached images and files" is selected in the pop-up window that will appear. I believe "Cookies and other site data" may also be selected by default, and if so, you will probably want to de-select that one before proceeding. Firefox: How to clear the Firefox cache I can confirm that the Reply and Quote functions were acting funky (i.e., non-functional) before I cleared my browser cache just now, and after doing so they seem to be back to normal.
  18. Suite 200 is the former America's location. Not sure about Suite 120. At any rate, glad to see this, as our PCP is at Kelsey-Seybold, and it will be nice to have a Kelsey clinic closer than the ones we usually go to (Tanglewood or the main campus on Holcombe).
  19. Interesting. My wife's office is very close by the Galleria, and the last time she was there, her take was that foot traffic was way down. That was several months ago, but I'd assumed that the trend would likely continue into the holiday season given that the virus hasn't exactly disappeared. Guess not.
  20. I suspect that particular analogy may not be operative this year.
  21. I take it you're not a fan of the buffet at Sam's in Fairfield.
  22. In today's America, Eisenhower would have been run out of the Republican party on a rail long before the interstate system got past the blue-sky phase.
