  1. U of H's development plans (particularly the planned areas around the future light rail extension) are part of a larger trend. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/07/education/07campus.html
  2. The next wave will be somewhere along the University Line, I think.
  3. Pffft. They can always put up another bar somewhere else. In the meantime, I hope that that CVS loses business and shuts down.
  4. It all comes down to development leagues. They should create a system that finds top soccer talent, pulls it out of school, and then nurtures it to be sold later for a profit. It could be like baseball's farm system, European soccer, or even European basketball (which has succeeded at creating excellent players which then come over to the U.S. despite basketball not being that popular in Europe). Then they wouldn't have to gamble hundreds of millions on older players like Beckham -- who wasn't even a starter for Real Madrid! Right now there are only a few development academies -- one in Bradenton FL and another in Oregon, I think.
  5. Where's Earth Liberation Front when we really need them!??!? It doesn't matter. In 5-10 years the land it is on will be bought and something else will replace it.
  6. 30 year plan or no 30 year plan, that light rail coming through is going to have a pretty big impact.
  7. Well, I think Discovery Green is a very nice name for our new park.
  8. As soon as they break ground, wander onto the plot with some clubs and golf balls. See if you can get your picture in the paper.
  9. If that's the thought process that went into this park idea, then I think whoever came up with this one is an absolute genius. It's sort of like a subsidy, except it's revenue-producing, and everyone gets a park out of it! Brilliant!
  10. Maybe the market for parking spaces doesn't work as efficiently as you think it does. I'm sure there are situations in which Hizzy's scenario comes to pass.
  11. Plus he seems to think there is a finite number of people who want parking. If I had to guess, I'd say the demand for downtown parking is practically infinite.
  12. According to the article, "The company has entered the Houston market with a strong support network of government officials. Mayor Bill White approached Johnson and Turner about investing in Houston about a year ago when the company had just closed its second investment fund." So I guess you could say Houston took an interest in Magic, instead of the other way around
  13. In terms of attracting visitors and out of town money, I can see why people in L.A. didn't get too excited -- they have a Rose Bowl *every* year, and whether it's the #1 v. #2 seed or just some Pac 10 team v. whoever it is they play, they're going to sell it out no matter what.
  14. I prefer "Dynamo Houston" to "Houston Dynamo" but that's just me.
  15. They should take a survey (a real one - not some web site poll) of hispanics who *actually* attend or are thinking of attending soccer games in Houston and see if they're offended. No one cares what some self-nominated racial representative guy thinks.
  16. Well, the whole libertarian thing is, indirectly, why most people come to Houston in the first place. If the idea of your neighbors doing what they want on their property terrifies you, I suggest *you* move to the mountains where you won't have any neighbors to worry about and control.
  17. Ironically, it's obvious that that advice applies to you more than it does anyone else. If you don't like the name, don't go to the games. It's a nice name the way it iwas. They've already printed the t-shirts and uniforms, so why bother changing it now?
  18. Renovate Robertson Stadium to make it state-of-the-art and get U of H to finance part of it. Send light rail down Richmond/Wheeler and put a slightly larger station at the stadium to accommodate the crowds. That's what I'd like to see.
  19. Well, you can't say you didn't see it coming. Houston has always been expanding at an incredible rate and will continue to do so for quite a long time. Let's see, if I were a Katy local, what would I do? Me, if I found encroaching civilization such a burden, I'd sell my house for a nice profit, buy something in Fulshear, and when civilization takes that place over in about, oh, 5 years or so I'd sell again (this time hopefully for an even bigger profit since the extension of Westpark will make Fulshear a bedroom community for wealthy Galleria workers) and move to rural Arizona and live like a king.
  20. Where specifically is the new coffee shop? I know that wine bar used to be a coffee shop, I'm just wondering where its replacement is.
  21. So why would a young, intelligent person want to move to Houston to start their career if it meant they would not be able to live in the nicest neighborhood no matter how successful they eventually became?
  22. Some people want to put mixed-use housing on it, and others want a theme park. I say combine the two ideas and hand over the land to someone like disney to build a livable theme park -- an urban, mixed use version of Celebration, FL.
