    I haven't heard much about the downtown plan lately. I wonder if it has something to do with the economy. If that's the case and the Dynamo move, where will they go? What municipality can afford a new stadium at this point in time?

    All the more reason to remodel Robertson. I think it should be a smaller version of the Westfalenstadion. (Or even the same size, if the Cougars really think they can bring in that many fans.)

    They can send it right down West Gray straight to the Galleria. One of the stops could be a hollowed-out mansion.

    In the future, please do not attack me personally. You do not know me or my family. (And besides, an "ad hom" attack is a logical fallcy.) A little civility goes a long way -- so if you are capable of keeping it on topic, please do so! Getting back on topic, I like the Massachussetts plan. You get a list of plans (like ehealthinsurance.com) one of which is a supercheap bare bones plan partly subsidized by the taxpayer. That's my understanding of it, anyway.

    I think they just come here for really specialized stuff they can't find anywhere else. For the stuff you can get anywhere, even people in this country will go to other countries to get treated. It's all about specialization, division of labor, etc. I would *hope* we have stuff that can't be found anywhere else -- after all, we spend a greater percentage of our GDP on health care than anyone!

    Oh geez, too many to list here. It all depends on your particular interests. I suggest getting a guidebook (or poking around this web site) or just plain old getting out there and exploring the city. There is a lot to do if you are willing to look for it. Good luck, and enjoy your stay!

    I wandered around yesterday afternoon and liked it also. Only a couple of shops were open and HOB was deserted (no, I didn't eat there)...some radio station had vehicles parked in front of HOB which made me think there was a concert promotion going on. I will re-visit when more things are open. It will be appealing to conventioneers but at some point you're going to want them to get on the LRT and go somewhere where they can spend money on stuff that is unique to Houston. Overall a good start.

    Yes! As long as it is open 24/7 and serves food / coffee.

    I really like the place that sells gelato and coffee over next door to Club Ibiza. That would be more of a tourist draw than Joe Muggs. The Joe Muggs at Katy Mills is usually empty. The design of the Houston Pavilions is fantastic, but the tenant list is not impressive. I hope the rest of the tenancy is more unique.

    A coffee shop that is local and that is NOT Starbucks. I am tired of Starbucks. There used to be a couple of nice coffee places downtown...another one wouldn't hurt. If it were open 24/7 that would be fantastic.

    -- Museum store that is specific to Houston museums (prints from current exhibits, gift-shop merch, etc). Also it should have free maps and guides to imminent events at Houston museums. As a result, an out of towner or tourist will be made more aware of local offerings.

    This was the first Texans game I watched in what must be several years. I thought they played really well up until the very end. Once the QB situation is sorted out the Texans will be really awesome. So the good news is they are no longer a bad team but the bad news is that they lost.

    Sugarland is quite a ways away. It will be quite a time before that happens, if it ever does.

    So can we have a referendum to make those go away (the one space per bedroom rule) ? I'd hate to think that developers are scaling down because of crap like that.

    Darnit, if that's in fact the case, then what's the point of the whole no-zoning thing if the free market can't step up and provide parking garages when and where we need them? Ah well...

    Argh, is there any direct way to get rid of those parking requirements? ie a referendum or something that we can all just vote on?

    3.5 million people in the metropolitan area...this was a loooong time coming.

    Any tuition hikes should come from out of staters. I think making it a Tier 1 research university will be good for the city overall...it won't affect undergrad selectivity too much (or, at least, it shouldn't) because most of the research that they are talking about happens at the graduate level. It will be harder for grad students to get into, but they come from all over the world anyway so that won't affect us locally. MOst likely you'll see a few more interdisciplinary institutes, and maybe expanded departments, but for the average high school kid I don't think this stuff will be detrimental. IF anything the future of U of H will be better for the typical undergrad since it seems like they are sincerely trying to increase quality of life amenities (more on campus housing, parking, rec center, etc) and are making it easier for low-income students to commute to (more transit options).

    I think it's either that or some cops will end up getting laid off or have their hours cut back. Sort of like billable hours.

    Like what, jaywalking? Nothing pulls in the revenue like speeding tickets. If they can't write tickets, I am terrified at the thought of what depths they might stoop to.
