  1. Next time I'm back in H-town I'm going to take an inflatable raft and doze off in that thing for a few hours. I'm thinking it beats lying on the grass.
  2. The white folks have moved in closer to town, to the detriment of many African American communities closer in. Same story as anywhere else...
  3. Dunno why anybody would be "jumping for joy" except out of schadenfreude. Seems like Houston as a whole is worse off. After all, the East End will only increase in population...
  4. That's pretty interesting. I hope they release more details soon.
  5. Egads, I am caught! C'est la vie.
  6. It's the MONNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
  7. Funny thread! It seems like nowadays the trend is the opposite...white yuppies moving into black neighborhoods. There must be something special about Pearland.
  8. Get a keg of something...Dos Equis maybe?
  9. No, definitely not a developer's phrase, not as far as I know. I just wasn't sure how to phrase the fact that I have long felt like that particular area should have been built up a long time ago but for some reason was left alone until now. And now that people are realizing it's not far at all from the TMC, I am not suprised that the development occurring there is of (what I think is) very high quality. I guess I would be interested to know how/why Pearland was left alone for so long. I do like this "Waterlight District" thing and think the concept is somewhat novel for the Houston area. The presidents thing is somewhat dorky, however.
  10. Only 15 min from TMC? This development must have been in-potential for quite some time. No wonder it's so upscale.
  11. It's my understanding that what the Dynamo want is really just a large high school-sized outdoor stadium...something along the lines of the new h.s. stadium out near Cy Fair College (but in a more expensive downtown location). I don't see how it would be worth it for the people who own the Dome to renovate it for soccer, since all the big soccer events will be at Reliant.
  12. Sounds expensive. there's your due diligence. Having said that, the Dynamo should probably ditch if they don't get what they want, which isn't very much in the larger scheme of things.
  13. They should get rid of that stupid dome thing that's down at that end Someone mentioned putting a park at the McGowen Superblock. For some reason I don't like that idea. Anyway I guess the East End line should at least be finalized before I start fantasizing about how to pump up real estate values down at that end of town.
  14. Nice park! What other land do you guys think exists for another similar park? I was thinking somewhere along the LRT line along the East End.
  15. Here's an article I read recently about prefab dorm housing. The students leave for spring break, and there's a new dorm building when they get back! http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/26/realesta.../26college.html
  16. Your WHAT !?!??! No, just kidding. Seriously, if you have something to contribute, don't taunt us! Start a new topic.
  17. As has been stated, I seem to remember the church issued some guidelines a while back for construction of future cathedrals. They emphasize focus on the community etc. etc. and not so much on ornate things which might be distracting. They're not so much moving away from things as moving towards a more community focused church experience. The most obvious example would be the semicircle layout tendency rather than the usual pews in a straight line. Back during the Renaissance, the catholic church was the only game in town and so commissioned a lot of artists to make stuff for them. I guess the modern equivalent is the NEA. Anyway thats my recollection/interpretation of things.
  18. Well if Houston's main library can't be a super research library for the people that need such a library hopefully it will at least cater to the rest of the community. I look forward to finding out what the surprise is.
  19. Like I said it's just as easy to check out the book and then take it home and read it. There are also many library-book-friendly cafes that are better than Starbucks. For example, the Coffee Guy chain (which was supposed to expand massively but as far as I could tell, didn't) had living-room style chairs and couches.
  20. The stuff mentioned in the article (a "customer centered" approach) is pretty interesting, and surprised me when I read it. That's the first I've heard of a library like that.
  21. I don't understand the paranoia about spilling things. If someone wanted to ruin a book, all they'd have to do is use their library card to check it out, bring it home, and then they could spill onto it whatever they wanted. I think library computers would be more at risk, but spill-proof keyboards do exist.
