  1. No mystery here. The school spelled it out in a report about their initiative. "Tier 1" (to them) means ~$100 million/year and in return they will bring venture capital $$ into the local economy.
  2. I overheard a guy at the Den saying that he wanted to sue to get out of his lease since he signed on with the understanding that there would be a grocery store. I understand his frustration since he claimed to not have a car, but like you I don't think they can say much without a lease specifying it out. My understanding was that he was just hoping the university would acquiesce rather than go to court. I guess that's what you get when you have a building full of law students
  3. Well then this goes back to my original point. If they are using "Tier 1" to justify things they do across-the-board in the same way they are throwing around "learning/scholar/research community" to justify building Calhoun Lofts then I am not enthused. You can't spin your way into the upper ranks. And in the meantime, other schools are improving themselves too.
  4. You're still not understanding. Becoming "Tier 1" entails whatever its proponents want it to entail, as its original, literal meaning has been lost. It did not always mean asking for ~$100 million/yr from the state legislature and building high-end dorms in the meantime. I even heard a girl say that U of H should build a new football stadium "so we can play Tier 1 teams."
  5. The initiative to make the school better is real (as it is for every school) but the phrase "Tier 1" has completely lost its original meaning and has come to mean whatever anybody wants it to mean. We have discussed this on HAIF before. The latest definition has something to do with attracting venture capital to the area and they even assigned a per-year dollar amount needed to get to "Tier 1" (as if it were really that easy). And now being "Tier 1" can be about high-end living and sportsmanship, too.
  6. Most students don't live on campus, so yeah, I think a new engineering building would be more enticing to the typical student. Well in that case it goes back to what I was saying earlier...it really does seem to be all about the cash flow, since the only "selective" thing about these dorms would be the price. You might be exaggerating my position just a little bit. What I'm saying is that I think someone somewhere found the phrase "Tier 1" years after it was effectively rendered meaningless and now they bandy it about whenever they want something. The other day I got an e-mail about "Cougar Sportsmanship" (along with everyone else on the general school mailing list) about the "letter of inquiry" C-USA sent to the school as a result of the students rushing the field after the football win against Texas Tech. It closes by encouraging the students to "make sure that we exhibit Tier One sportsmanship at all of our UH athletic events." So I think they can lay it on a little thick. My overall opinion is that the school is headed in the right direction but I'll believe it when I see it.
  7. What a depressing thread. I'm beginning to think I won't ever be able to get far enough away. Everybody just move to Dallas, you'll all really like it there. Or are you afraid you'll really, really like it and won't ever want to move back?
  8. I think the proportion of students that want to live on campus is on the rise, but there was always a baseline contingent that has been, and still is, underserved. Irrespective of whatever amenities they build the fact is that they still have not gotten the housing thing right. If that's the case then Calhoun Lofts should have been built off-campus. The university should not be leasing prime land on-campus to private dorm companies, irrespective of how "selective" these dorms are supposed to be. And how can private dorms afford to be "selective"? These lofts must have gotten a great deal on the land lease if they are able to sit there half-empty without any price reductions or amenities of any sort (ie the nonexistent grocery store). I personally doubt the university is really interested in creating "learning communities." Like "Tier 1" it's just a buzzword they must have picked up somewhere and like "Tier 1" the phrase "learning communities" is just meaningless enough to take to mean whatever they want. So anything they build from here on out, no matter how overly expensive or how much they give up to for-profit corporations, will be categorized as being "Tier 1" or "scholar research community"-based irrespective of reality.
  9. Texans over Twins on Wash Ave.? I would've broken the windows out of that bartender's car, if not the bar itself. Sawyer Park sucks.
  10. Dunno, is Harris Co. still the drunk-driving capital of the country?
  11. True, I heard they almost got blacked out on opening night. On the other hand, there was this: http://www.star-telegram.com/arlington_news/story/1626975.html
  12. The rumor is that U of H is going to demolish the stadium and build a new "super stadium" (w/a new parking garage) in its place. U of H needs to construct more winning seasons first. Only then will this plan make sense. Otherwise it will be like Rice Stadium -- a "super stadium" that is always empty. Edit: They should also sell out the stadium for at least a few years. At a certain point they can make the students pay for tickets (instead of just getting in free w/an ID) and see if the attendance keeps up.
  13. I did a thought experiment and concluded that if I were a high school student, Calhoun Lofts would not entice me to attend U of H. However, a new engineering building/quad, imho, would be much more appealing. I am very suspicious of a "Scholars and research community" the only barrier to entry being the ability to afford to live there. 12 month leases make me very certain that it is all about the cash flow. I heard from a guy who lives there that the university leases the land out to a private company that built and runs the dorms. This makes sense, as they do not operate through the Housing and Dining Office but from somewhere within Calhoun Lofts. By default there will always be people who prefer to live, work, and play on campus. The trick is to not go out of your way to drive them off.
  14. I agree with the editor's comments, but all I'll say is that I figured out long ago that you shouldn't say those types of things to people who live in places like this. It just gets them all curious and then a bunch of them will move somewhere interesting but nothing will change for them except now they're dragging down all the people around them in a new location.
  15. Anyone can start their own record label and still get national attention with good music.
  16. I think if it were located in the center area and had a patio it would still be open.

  18. Given the lack of ranked matchups, I might do just that. Seems like everyone's got the "SEC disease" this week!
  19. As a casual fan, I prefer matchups of ranked teams.
  20. Looks like USC-Ohio State and UH-Oklahoma State are the only good games this weekend. I don't like Oklahoma State. They were set to play Boise State next year, but dropped after the Broncos beat Oregon last week. Hrm.
  21. I think nonbinding hearings are unnecessary. Just put up a web site and a bunch of signs.
  22. Well I guess technically "spread" is just a formation thing. So if you follow the letter of the law anybody who fits a certain criteria runs the "spread." But in spirit I am pretty sure it's basically a run'n'shoot. The best and most exciting spread is the spread-option which is a spread formation with a running QB, no tight end, a man in motion every time, and the RB will line up next to the QB (for that direct-snap action, among other things). But the term itself is meaningless, especially now. Five years ago nobody wanted anything to do with it but now that Florida ran it and the homers got curious suddenly everyone's apparently been running it the whole time.
