  1. Perhaps we could attend one of his sermons, and after each of his fortune-cookie statements everyone could shout, "IN BED!" instead of "Amen!" “You have something to offer that nobody else can give!” "IN BED!" “To affirm is to make firm.” "IN BED!"
  2. Elevators have become boring, anyway. Those of us who remember ones in older buildings that still had mechanical controls could thrill to that weightless feeling in the stomach when they'd descend and feeling ones knees slightly buckle when ascending. Can't say if they actually were faster than modern ones, but they sure felt that way.
  3. R.I.P. Hate to see it go, but it had deteriorated to the point of being unsalvageable. (Wish I'd known about the demolition, as some of the decorative details may have been salvageable.)

  5. To bring up an old-fashioned term: is she merely claustrophobic? I've always found escalators terrifying. There's a step...and then - there isn't!
  6. As one of 'those people' (I've worked as an election clerk for many years), no, we don't know who's voting for whom. The registration stamp applies only during primary elections. It has no bearing on voting in general elections. I've never seen (or heard of) anyone's right to vote being questioned on that basis. If you've observed anyone being denied the right to vote, please step forward. If you have proof of voter fraud, do the same. In the mean time I suggest you shut up.

The registration stamp is only applied for people who vote in the primary elections. No one is denied the vote on that basis. If you have a specific gripe, take it up with the precinct judge. Your ignorance is disturbing and insulting.
  8. And don't ever make the mistake of calling it "Schlum-Burger" in the presence of an employee. It's Schlum-ber-JZEAA! in addition to the remarkable art she collected, and her generosity in sharing it with the public, the sensitivity she showed in creating an urban environment which preserved and respected the neighborhood in which she built her museum is a wonderful legacy.
  9. To clarify, my remarks were addressed to the McRib, not to HAIF.
  10. Wasn't it Joel Olsteen who said "You long to see the Great Pyramids"?
  11. Never knew about the spectacular murder case with which he was connected. My recollection was that when he went bankrupt in the 80's he claimed that the penthouse he occupied on top of an office building was covered under the homestead exemption, and by some stretch, so was the entire building. His testicles should be bronzed and placed in a museum.
  12. Yes. It's a family heirloom, and I'd appreciate its return. Editor is correct; the presence or lack of benches has no effect on addicts. They congregate wherever there's a lesser chance of being harassed by the police. If there are users, there are dealers in close proximity. The squeaky wheel gets the grease; ask for increased patrolling. If your neighbors get involved too, there's a chance that the activity can be moved to some other neighborhood.
  13. I see your point. Really do. And that's why I keep coming back to this forum. On one hand, I'm disgusted and disturbed that viable living spaces were obliterated. This is something more than a game of Monopoly; when historic houses and peoples residences were obliterated, friends were displaced; a vital part of the neighborhood is now a vacant lot. Someone's good intentions didn't come true. On the other, the destruction was necessary to procure further investment. Isn't there some way that we could configure development, where we're assured that The Financing Has Come Through, before we tear down what's already working (however feebly)? The vacant lot isn't as productive as it was before the abortive attempt at development. Sorry things didn't work out. And now we all pay the price.
  14. If I was to believe you.... oh, hell, I do. Everyone has suspected this. When's the last time you saw Lynn Wyatt waiting patiently in line at the DMV? Still, for we (the hoi polloi), a little more consideration would be appreciated.
  15. That's the conundrum. It's a prosaic city, where individual accomplishments are more valued than civic pride. How does one create a monument to the unmonumental?
  16. When yokels arrive on the train from Podunk and emerge, squinting, from Grand Central Terminal, Times Square is the first impression of New York they're going to have. We don't have that sort of captive audience in Houston. Tourism -and the tourist experience - is in itself a theatrical quality of New York which we cannot duplicate in Houston.

  18. With all respect - pioneers seek things out on their own. If the public already knows, you're too late. (Again, no disrespect intended. Hope you see my point.)
  19. I think a good security code addition would be to have a scratch-n-sniff "Yellow Rose of Texas" feature. On a more practical level, how come we have to go to far-flung neighborhoods to interact with Texas Department of Safety? A small downtown or Midtown location would benefit many people.
  20. If it's good enough for Martha Stuart, it deserves a $2 investment of my money and time. The Animal Burger sounds intriguing. Never had a McRib!? OMG... I showed up at the last HAIF meetup with McRib in hand. Utterly disgusting, and addicting. The Simpsons built an entire episode around it.
  21. Anvil is on The Curve, on Westheimer.
  22. According to the bartender at Lola's, this is going to be used for additional parking space for La Mexicana restaurant (Fairview @ Montrose). Seems a little far for people to walk - but parking is at a premium in Montrose these days.
  23. I wonder if pictures exist which show Lincoln St as it was before it was expanded into (North) Montrose. Existing buildings which face on that portion of Montrose all seem to date from the '60s.
  24. The orange stickers are still on the front doors (inadequate sprinkler system.) Any updates on 3400 Montrose?
