  1. Seems like the area would win extra points for being convenient to the big airport, too.
  2. Or, perhaps, Allen Parkway. It would be close to W. Dallas, and also provide easy access to Buffalo Bayou Park.
  3. It looks like tenement housing. For both the occupants and the movers' sake, I hope it includes a good-sized elevator.
  4. "Light Rail Lofts", eh? Does this mean that it will sometimes abruptly close on weekends without explanation or prior notice?
  5. Houston Community College's Crawford Annex formerly occupied this site.
  6. Also, if you want to go back a few years, The WIlde 'N' Stein bookstore at the Westheimer Mini-Mall (near the Happy Budda). It was operated by a very petite man, whose name was Small. He always wore black clothing. Nice guy.
  7. You really get around! Ever notice how much more can be seen when travelling on foot or bike, instead of in a car?
  8. I voted for Mayor Turner, partially because I believed in him, partially because the alternatives were so bleak. The final of his limited terms has raised some troubling questions about his judgement and integrity. There's the matter of the undistributed funds for Harvey relief, denying support for buying existing structures to be used as affordable housing, his dismissal of concerns regarding reopening Spur 527, the affordable housing contracts he approved having the appearance of conflict of interest, the firing of the housing director who publicly raised questions about the bidding process, etc. Although the City of Houston elections are officially non-partisan, everyone knows which are the Democratic and Republican candidates. Is there the possibility of a backlash against Turner that will propel a "non-partisan" Republican candidate into office?
  9. Thanks for your recap on this meeting. I've been trying to get straight answers from the COH about sidewalks for forty years, and have been left with the impression that no one really knew or cared much about the various aspects (i.e., if the homeowner can remove an existing sidewalk without replacing it, who's responsible for construction and financing new sidewalks and repair of existing ones, if laws regarding the blockage of sidewalks are ever enforced, etc.). I've been told that the regulations vary depending on in what part of town the sidewalk is located, as it varies from one subdivision to another. Did anyone raise this issue, or was I given misinformation? Is there a chance that some Einstein can develop a Universal Sidewalk Constant? I'm so tired of the conflicting answers to simple questions.
  10. Could this be a reference to the unholy alliance between the Midtown TIRZ and the 3rd Ward (the portion well outside of Midtown)?
  11. That probably explains why the series "Ozark" is filmed in the Atlanta area, and not in the actual Lake of the Ozarks. Sometimes this can come back to bite the filmmaker. I've heard that at the Houston premier of "Urban Cowboy" the audience burst into laughter, because when John Travolta stepped out of his trailer, the famous mountains of Pasadena TX could be seen in the distance.
  12. I recall a long-time Montrose resident telling me that some people were glad to see the palms go because they were infested with rats. It seems possible, but I've never seen any independent confirmation.
  13. If you mean the one housing Montrose Chinese Restaurant, I couldn't agree more. (Also, IMHO their food sucks unless you're into La Choy).
  14. Has a sign been posted? Any idea when demolition/construction will begin?
  15. After reading this post several times, I must confess that it still mystifies me. What "major improvements" might be made here, and to what? What's meant by "where the other businesses were previously"? What does any of this have to do with "A facelift of sorts"? Why would the individual lots need to be consolidated if there's no future plans to do something else with the properties? After all, they've been each sitting on their own little happy lots for decades. If someone can explain this to me, I thank you in advance.
  16. Hi, Loca local and welcome to HAIF. So far as I'm concerned, there are no visuals too slick, nor goals too audacious. Bring on the rabble rousers and the Industrial Light and Magic - looking forward to your insights and expertise.
  17. What a relief that University of St. Thomas officials see the value of this building and that its future is assured (as much as anything in Houston can be assured).
  18. Interesting that a spur projects and dead-ends from the Tuam section to the "Superblock".
  19. They're wasting no time on this project. At this pace, the building might very well be taking shape by year's end.
  20. To paraphrase Yogi Berra, "No one opens restaurants there anymore. It's too much in demand."
  21. I'm hooked on "Watch JR Go" and "100% Jake", which is kind of strange, since I'm not all that interested in cars but they make auto repair look interesting. Also, "Regular Cars", where a variety of random, regular used cars are road-tested; the reviews feature over-the-top descriptions which are often quite funny. "America's Test Kitchen", because it's food, and they taught me how to sous-vide soft cooked eggs properly. zefrank1, who amusingly describes the attributes and habits of animals in a sort of pseudo-scholarly tone of voice ("This is how the trap jaw ant do.") Bob Fowler, because i like vintage sewing machines. I don't sew, but I like the machines. Among others.
  22. If that's the case, it'll be an historic landmark by the time it's completed.
  23. Do you mean Blacksmith (formerly Mary's) or Slick Willie's? What kind of activity did you spot?
  24. To split hairs, there were two tenants in that building; Chances was on the east side, the space now occupied by Hay Market. Prior to Chances, this was the home of the infamous Boobie Rock. Charlie's Coffee Shop was in the western portion, which is the current Georgia James location.
  25. I ask myself the same question. It's a way to test my memory, and my powers of observation and deduction. And it's fun.
