@iah77 perhaps the REAL QUERY that you should be presenting is... WHY DOESN'T HOUSTON, THE 4th LARGEST CITY IN THE USA... HAVE ONE YET?  (dallas has one, atlanta has two, austin has one, and so on) please feast your eyes upon the above illustrations that i have showcased.  i have harbored the utmost pleasure of vacationing at both of these W HOTEL pleasure palaces in dubai, uae, while i was working abroad in afghanistan.  high-end style, sophistication, supreme service, foremost amenities, spectacular design, location, ultra-posh, and comfort, are just a few of the primary reasons that i often opt to vacay/stay at a W HOTEL brand.  it very often makes me sick to my stomach that our fair city of houston has to jump through all forms bullshit hoops just to try and land a W brand.  we have very recently tried DESPERATELY to land one downtown at the GEORGE R. BROWN (and even this one fell through).  JUST WHAT ON EARTH IS THE HUGE PROBLEM WITH HOUSTON ACQUIRING A W BRAND HOTEL... all the while, all of the other major cities across the globe are getting them (or already have them)?  WHY ON EARTH DO THEY JUST KEEP SNUBBING HOUSTON?  it is highly embarrassing when my good friends from out of town ask me about our W HOTEL... and i have to state to them that "we do not have on yet" and then hear them gasp and say "WHAT, YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING"!

City council was supposed to vote on the W Hotel downtown after Houston First approved. What ever happened to that? Did city council vote yet? Do I need to call Houston First?

In-N-Out's model is predicated on shipping fresh beef from their own distribution centers.  Generally, they do not ship more than 500 miles from such centers.  A 500 mile circle around Dallas captures Houston, San Antonio, Austin, New Orleans (pushing the edge of it by road), Kansas City (again pushing it), Oklahoma City, and Memphis, Tennessee.  St. Louis and Nashville are only a short distance outside the 500 mile circle and could probably be reached with effective shipping runs.  A 500 mile circle around Houston leaves out Kansas City, Nashville, St. Louis and related markets.  Geographically, for businesses that rely on distribution in the U.S., Dallas will typically win out over Houston.

I feel that distribution center shouldve been built here.

  3. Don't get me wrong,  I'm not bashing Dallas but I've grown tired of being excited about a new restaurant or retail establishment opening in Houston then to see it has already had locations in Dallas for years before they decided to expand here. This new burger place for example has a California office and a Dallas office. If we are the food capital of the southwest, why aren't most of these places Houston based. I know N and Out burger will eventually expand here but I feel they should have opened Houston locations first. Of I'm wrong I'm opened to correction.

Traditional non-food retail, especially large format clothing stores, is in a bad place right now. Online shopping is wreaking havoc and most companies are uneasy about building new stores. We might just have to wait a little while. I personally wonder if a Houston Center makeover (planned by Brookfield) might land some street-facing retailers before Dallas Street. There are more wallets in that area, fewer homeless, and a probably a better physical layout than the wall of parking garages on Dallas Street.

You are right about retail but I know Sephora is actively looking for new locations in Houston as we speak. Dry Bar would be  great  downtown.  Target is a no brainer. Apple or Microsoft would be nice. I think pottery barn or west elm would do well for furnishing these new apartments and homes in the area. Your thoughts?

I respectfully disagree. With warehouses there is a. Hope for a good development to come along and b. Does not create a "lower" end destination.  There is a nearby current development that this type of center would be more appropriate next to.

I wasn't expecting a ROD part II, just higher expectations than Sam's club, Ross-esque stores, and movie theater...

It was always an eyesore traveling this part of I10. Sure it's not the best development for the area but an industrial park this close to downtown was worse. So if you had to choose either or, which one would you choose?
