  1. Pretty sure that I've heard some rumors about the conversion underway at 806 Main St. becoming a Kimpton branded hotel. Seems like a perfect fit...
  2. Wait, if we spend $$$ on expanding transit options then there will be no roads? No wonder so many people are anti-METRO.
  3. I cannot tell you the last time I traveled on 290. I ride the rail at least once a week. However, I guess your opinion matters more than mine...
  4. That's the best plan I've seen. It's a GREAT start and certainly beats the circus taking place in the House today. Seriously, those fools spent the whole day voting on a symbolic bill that will never pass and doesn't have a single itemized cut listed? Governing isn't about being an uncompromising bully. I am so tired of our two party system.
  5. Ignorance is bliss. I was going to type out a long-winded response but have decided instead to use the ignore feature for the first time ever.
  6. I've gotten so old that I can remember when Chimney Rock was just a two laned residential street without a bridge over the bayou. I used to race my bike down the "hill" near Indian Trail back in the day.
  7. Those are all hotel renderings next to the rendering for the downtown YMCA. The first two were the earliest designs for the Embassy Suites in downtown. Funny that they aren't showcasing the actual design that was built! The last two are Hilton Garden Inns. The top one is one that MCS Architects built (I believe near Chinatown) and the bottom one was a proposal being floated for downtown Houston that never came to be. This actually worries me... Could we be going from a Ritz-Carlton skyscraper to a typical tunnel-form beige stucco cheapo design? Mitchell Carlson Stone (I think that's the name of the firm) is the architecture firm behind all of those renderings and they build blah hotels.
  8. Another way of thinking about 1,200,000 is that we basically added the entire population of metro Oklahoma City in one decade.
  9. I give this place a big thumbs up. I went with my sister for lunch. Incredible bottled beer selection. Sonic ice for folks that love that like I do. The prices were cheaper than any of the burrito joints nearby. Plus, the slow simmered chicken in my Mexicali taco was absolutely perfect. The corn tortillas were solid too and the rest of the ingredients (avocado slice, homemade pico, and lime wedge) were super fresh. I will definitely go back.
  10. UH was the first campus in the state to start a fund for public art pieces back in 1966. There are so many jewels out there. The newest piece is by Houston's own Art Guys and is part of the recently opened freshman dorm complex off of Calhoun. It's not my favorite but it's nice to see that the campus keeps adding to its impressive collection. Other things that I enjoy but haven't been mentioned yet; The Beer Can House + Orange Show The reflection pool with rapids at the newly revamped Hermann Park Mecom Fountain Project Row Houses (architecture and preservation as art) Sunset, North, and South Blvds. (landscape architecture as art... nothing is as pretty as the live oak canopy) I aslo really enjoyed the "Blue Bayou" sidewalk when it first opened but it's a mess now.
  11. A Moment in Time (Wortham Theatre Box Office on Main Campus)
  12. I've always loved the Wortham Fountain. Here are some of my faves, University of Houston Public Art Double Physichromie (Welcome Center on Main Campus)
  13. SF is a different kind of dirty... the trustafarian kids need to collectively be hosed down.
  14. It's easy to romantacize about SF. It's easily the most beautiful city in the USA in my opinion. That said, I broke up with my ex when he chose UCSF over Baylor because sometimes common sense gets in the way. Housing prices are NUTS in that town. Taxes are crazy compared to Texas, and despite what Californians think, they aren't getting much more in the way of services to make up for the difference. Additionally, after 15 years in Boston, I was looking for a different way of life, not to mention the economy in the Bay Area SUCKS for anyone not working for Facebook. I haven't regretted my decision once. At the end of the day, SF is a great place to visit, but Houston is a great place to live.
  15. Whose Crane? Nice updates. There's a lot of momentum out at UH right now. Whose Crane? Nice updates. There's a lot of momentum out at UH right now.
  16. I've really started to notice the sick trees in the past week or so. Memorial Park has many that seem to just be wilting. Lots of the newly planted treelings around town are D-E-A-D too.
  17. Lennon was a closet Republican and Lovett Homes build houses without proper linen closets. Would Lennon live in a Lovett?
  18. According to the HBJ http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/print-edition/2011/06/24/delayed-apartment-tower-set-for.html, a single 22 story apartment tower is due to break ground in late summer. Whiteco Residential out of Indiana originally planned twin 35 story towers back in 2007. The original design called for two towers with a contemporary design. The new project will be just one tower described as "classical and traditional." Features include; Westheimer at Sage location (near Walgreens) 300 luxury rental units 6th floor pool deck with fitness center parking on levels 2-5 The architect on record is Mitchell Carlson Stone so don't get your hopes up. This is the firm that brought us Houston area jewels such as the Embassy Suites downtown, Homewood Suites at the Galleria, and a Hilton Garden Inn...
  19. I can't believe you've had a cricket problem. Ever since I moved into my HOME, we have had a plague of locusts take over the media room and make the ROOF DECK unbearable. I would LOVETT if the BUILDER would help me with my problem at my CUSTOM HOME. I haven't been able to help myself in this matter because the MOLD SPORES have been really high lately. I think I might be allergic to the MOLD. I would LOVETT if my HOME didn't have such an issue. How can you lessen the effects of MOLD when you're covered with locusts? I would LOVETT if anyone could give me advice. I feel like I am bashing my head against a not so properly installed BRICK WALL.
  20. Andy Cohen's got the 9-1-1... Ugh, seems as if I am watching the real housewives too much!
  21. Isn't this the same Skanska that claimed that they didn't need financing or a pre-lease figure in order to break ground on their Galleria area tower? That one hasn't broken ground yet and the rumors are that it wont. I'd absolutely HATE to see another historic, even if it isn't that great, building come down with the promise of something going up in its place only for nothing to be built. Downtown already has enough scars. If this is true, we'll be adding vacant/surface lots at the old YMCA, the old Sheraton, and now the Houston Club all in just one year. Ughhh.
  22. LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. 77005 is primo. Sales there and in similar zip codes like 77019, 77098, 77006, 77056, 77027, 77024 and 77057 will likely never go into a large scale decline because of the demand. These zip codes offer easy access to downtown, the TMC, Uptown, Greenway, etc... and also to the best the city has to offer (parks, theater, museums, restaurants, etc...) Most importantly though, they are zoned to Lamar, Bellaire, Memorial, and Westside Highs which outperform most suburban schools and are close to the best prep schools in town (St Johns, Lamar, Episcopal, St Thomas, Duchesne). The real estate crash in this country was largely centered in the sprawl. Central Boston prices have remained steady. Same with Manhattan and the best parts of LA, San Fran, Chicago, etc.. However, the suburbs and exurbs were hit HARD.
  23. The map of Boston is only showing the FOUR subway/light rail lines. There's the Red Line, Orange Line, Blue Line, and original Green Line (runs largely on surface streets once outside of the Back Bay). However, Boston also has commuter rail that connects to these lines, as well as a bus-rapid transit line (Silver Line), extensive bus routes, and even several commuter ferry lines that connect the Financial District with North and South Shore communities.
