  1. If they are going out that way, then it's going to happen on the SW Side also as there are higher income brackets among minorities then....if so, SW Houston from Highway 90 from 610 to Highway 6 only has one Wal-Mart along that whole route and that's in Sugar Land on Highway 6. With the growth out that way now I can see a Wal-Mart somewhere around there... I still think a theatre would help the area in Northline...all of this new development doesn't have a "after" 9 p.m. setting
  2. The Theatre was one of the nicer one's in town......free refills, stadium seating
  3. once again, the key to the next successful movie theatre is who can get the SW Houston market between 2234 to Almeda Road as there's no theatre nearby in those areas Pearland is the closest but outside of that it's a 15-minute drive at least to the nearest theatre for my old area.....we lost Cinema 6 in Mo. City as other theatres popped up with better amenities and Meyer Park is gone also.... they may need to do one of those zip code surveys to see where most of that area is attending movies... Magic Johnson's Theatre wasn't bad to attend....nothing but youngsters hung out there but it was decent...I wonder why he's not reopening it as there's a big void on I-45 until Loews in Spring I think....all that does is push the moviegoers to Tinseltown on 290, AMC in Willowbrook or AMC in Humble
  4. Wal-Mart doesn't come in minority areas...it'll come as the area gradually changes (West Road) but if the area is minority, it's not coming nine times out of 10 unless it's caught in an area where affluent folks, middle class folks and low-income folks are pretty close....The Meyer Park location is a perfect example...
  5. I agree 100% as an alumnus and former employee....however, the powers that be think status quo is fine and marketing is non-existant I worked in athletics but the department has never had much financial support from the school and alumni support ain't going to pay bills.....if the school would buckle down and commit to funding athletics knowing it may not bring in consistent bucks no telling what offshoots would arise though? The current president thinks he's back at Kentucky and expects minimal financial support from the school and heavy alumni support...that's not how it works at our place.
  6. I never knew of a "middle class" Galveston....I knew most of the brothas stayed in the projects or surrounding areas and the whites stayed in the big homes and the middle area was beach homes to me... As blacks became educated eventually you would see a northern migration to outlying areas as in most cases in Houston where most blacks settle in nicer areas that are pretty close to where they came from... Back in the 70s, the Missouri City/Hiram Clarke area was populated by kids who grew up in Third Ward or so but went to college and had the resources to move... Alot of folks who grew up in Acres Homes are now outside the Beltway in Spring now....5th Ward = North Shore and North Forest area is Humble If Magolia and other areas change, what happens then? The little country paradise my family grew up in becomes populated? Highway 6 and 1960 intersect and looks like a half-loop but technically aren't the same as 6 continues along 290 then breaks off to College Station while 1960 goes to Dayton.
  7. PV has as much history as A&M and they are unique in theor own way as the others were geared as satellite campuses
  8. that's how are alot of us are....instead of helping to develop an area and make it work for you, we like to run and brag on moving to an "exclusive area"....that's why Houston is what it is now because people don't stay put..with all this growth people are forgetting your leaving alot of stuff behind too many times I had folks I knew brag on moving to "Sugar Land" in the 90s.....me being inquisitive, I ask 'where at' since there are alot of areas in Sugar Land where the homes are smaller than homes right off 610....usually the conversation quickly changes... In 20 years, what will be the "new" Highway 6, 1960? How far can you build from downtown literally?
  9. Meyer Park was the father of the "moden megaplex theatre"...everyone from 610 North, West, South, Mo. City, etc. hung out there as it was the place to be before the theatre building boom of the 90s and early 2000s. They were the "kings" of sold out premiers and you had to buy a ticket 4 hours in advance to see a showing....how many times did I miss the initial showing of "Ninja Turtles"....lol What killed Meyer park was stadium seating and the strip center was caught in between demographic changes as it never seemed to replace the stores it lost...Media PLay, Blockbuster Music, etc. How can you tell an apartment dweller over there Vic? The apartments on south post oak are heavily hispanic and the mass row of apartments on West Bellfort is several miles away and everything is in there....
  10. The A&M system will push the buttons on architechture....look at PV's architechture building A&M at Prairie View? Will never happen.....
  11. to sum it up...whites live in an area, blacks follow, whites move, blacks dominate for a short time, hispanics then move in droves to the now black area, blacks then move back with the whites, whites then move again... basically, that's the story of Loop 610 to the Woodlands....Jeff Davis, Northline, etc. were white, blacks then moved in and now Aldine ISD is the white district, blacks get rezoned there from Acres Home and eventually move into the area, whites then move out to Spring while hispanics are closely making their way up I-45 Aldine ISD and HISD are now predominately hispanic and Spring ISD is now majority black as blacks have made their way up 1960 which leads to growth in Klein ISD and The Woodlands for whites. With public transportation non-existant way out there past 1960 now..don't know when the next shift will occur but they are developing the other side of Conroe...
  12. that area picks up the Greenspoint offshoot which used to dominate Aldine High.....better road access allows for more diversity
  13. package it with a academic center/classroom space and you can push it through....I've never seen how can a campus like PV function without a viable football stadium all these years...you throw that on campus, alot of guys at A&M for example, would transfer down knowing there's a nice campus with facilities close by... got to get a PV alum on the board of regents....the president the regents chose for PV.....I see why they did it...thanks
  14. I have a friend who coaches at Spring High feeder middle school....he sees the change coming for Spring... the West Side of FBISD is heavily minrority close to the HISD/Alief area..all the Mission whatever schools and Bush High are the same demographics... bottom line, the "money" areas will fight to keep certain areas the same but ultimately, it'll happen..why even waste time running away because you got to interact with folks one day in life....
  15. when will these regents spend some cash on Prairie View's football stadium? We have everything else new but that on campus oddly enough....
  16. that has to be the auditorium......I predicted a shopping mall concept quite some time ago...problem is with these new schools....folks who attend less than desirable schools will want to experience the feeling and make their way out there...DeKaney is very accessible by public transportation and easy to move out to... also though...these facilities spoil the kids.....what else can they ask for in life?
  17. to save you time....anytime a suburban area borders a somewhat "urban" area...the suburban area will change as the residents of the "urban" area acquire the means to move out there.... EXAMPLES FBISD borders HISD (has changed) Aldine ISD borders HISD (has changed) Spring ISD borders HISD (has changed) Humble ISD borders North Forest ISD and Aldine ISD (has changed) Spring Branch borders Alief ISD & HISD (has changed) Alief ISD borders HISD (has changed) HISd borders Galena Park ISD (has changed) HISD borders Pearland ISD (change will occur towards the northern end first) It may take some time but Klein ISD is the next to change as eventually Spring ISD will overflow...the bottom half of Klein ISD is minority due to odd zoning but the area bordering 1960 will ultimately begin to switch
  18. what is "low-income" out there? I guess I don't need to invest a hummer in 4th ward now
  19. reverse white flight......4th ward was less than desirable at one time...people realized how far they moved out and hated traffic they decide to reclaim the easiest area possible close to downtown....unfortunately, with no zoning and greed, they let these developers drop anything down....one bad economic bust, those tin homes turn into urban jungles...this makes the projects in New Orleans look spacious... a a black male, this teaches the value of ownership..you own the land, you have the power...you rent you get nothing..but no telling what kind of underhanded deals folks used to make blacks think they were owning instead of renting back in the mid 50s to 60s... This looks like a fad to me.....
  20. damn shame how they ran folks off for greed....but this shows you the value of ownership... I remember when people looked down on the Fonde Rec Center for years and let up damn near die before it came back in 1991....now, you barely can find it
  21. West Oaks is another mall that died.... First Colony to me ain't much to brag on...it's an updated Sharpstown and catered to the area...when it opened it never had much of an appeal
  22. OK folks...time for another bond election for more new schools and more taxes...thanks!
  23. I've noticed also the 2234 centers sit vacant while anything off 518 fills as soon as the foundation hardens..they HAVE to do something with 2234...too much traffic now with little light at night.... I grew up across the tracks near the salt mill and my old area is finally beginning to develop with all the freeway access....my only gripe is when will a major, full-service grocery store ever come to our area? The HEB at BW8 and West Fuqua never materialized and the rest now are Foodaramas which are decent but they're not full-service... Outside of Kroger on 518..what else is out there?
  24. don't know why Texas Southern doesn't get in on this and come up with some type of design concept so they can get a stadium out of this also....
  25. I work at GSU....just left Houston this weekend but Shreveport is my new favorite place because it reminds me of a decent city as I can't get home as much I saw they bulldozed the strip on Post Oak where Gulf Shores used to be...it fronts Gasmer and I know it was on that Bayou Redevelopment site Where I grew up (Briargate)..I've never seen a flood to this day..when Allison hit...we were high and dry...but the back part of the neighborhood isn't developed and left in its original state due to oil wells and the antennas which probably helps control floods...
