  1. Bums aside, that intersection of Main and Walker, I believe it is, needs some TLC. The West building I believe is right across the street.
  2. What happened to all of this that was suppose to be planned? http://www.stullandlee.com/planning/masterplanning/fwrp.htm
  3. IMO, walkable environments and good land use are intuitive. I know good land use can be subjective, but when in most communities the amount of developed land is growing faster than the population, it's kind of an issue and contrary to TheNiche's perspective it forces the general population to be overly dependant on automobiles increasing pollution, creates serious social issues by leaving the urban population behind to cater to what is happening on the fringes of metropolitan areas that probably destroyed farm land and open spaces that should have been conserved. My problem is alot of these problems are creeping up right on the border of downtown leaving this city with little options but to make true urban living in Houston a distant reality that we have to travel somewhere else to experience. Shouldn't have to be that way.
  4. I think it was more out of necessity, because naturally some cities were built without the car in mind but actual people, but too many people overlook how important walkable environments are today. Not just because it makes for a pretty streetscape or to have that nostalgiac feel. I think it is still kind of silly to say that there are not any true walkable environments that evolved by regulations or zoning codes set by the local goverment.
  5. Sounds like chicken and the egg. I always said it was a cycle. It all starts with regulated land use which Houston lacks for the most part. edit: But I know that would be a commie liberal move.
  6. You make it sound so easy. So are you saying the built environment does not play a role in car dependency? I am sure there are plenty of people in Midtown that would love to have a car free lifestyle but the built environment plays a huge role. You are going outside human nature and being quite unrealistic if you believe people are going to walk when the environment is not ped- friendly. I mean what are your thoughts of someone if you see them walking in Uptown vs the historic district of Downtown? You would probably think they were car jacked if they were walking in the former.
  7. OMG. You are crazy. I am sure you all understand what GREASER is saying. Of course we all rely on oil one way or the other, but there are alternatives rather than taking human life just to increase our dependency. Know with all this, I am not showing my personal views, just my perspective on what DFW and GREASER are trying to get across. Bringing up fur coats is apples and oranges in my opinion.
  8. Anyone know about the new office and retail space replacing that red building east of Elmen I believe it is?
  9. Ditto. I have been disgustingly addicted to Tex Mex food lately.
  10. Voted for Bell in early election. Pretty sure Perry will win by single digits as far as percentage.
  11. Looks like MiDTOWNeR's beloved San Diego is worse than Houston. What paradise did you come from before you moved to Houston anyway Midtowner? Did you move here for the sole purpose to spread the word that there are better cities out there than Houston? I am not saying you are not entitled to an opinion, hell I agree with you on some things actually, but when over 80% of your post are geared towards how third world Houston is, it gets tiring. edit: and for some of those high percentage points cities that have over 50% on the good list, I can say that I'll past except for Miami and Seattle. Tells how much of a non issue this is.
  12. The project was not renamed to Alta. Alta is the name of the Residential towers. It's kind of like if Camden were developing the apartments they would be called Camden Pavilions. Alta has apartments on Almeda also.
  13. Inspired by isuredid, I thought it would be nice to see some quality new construction that is going up in neighborhoods. Here is one I found in the Heights. The place is only 10 years old and already looks better than most century Victoian homes in the city. Has anyone seen this house pesonally? Opinions? Across the street doesn't look to shabby either.
  14. I usually see where MiDTOWNeR is coming from, but I don't see the argument as far as bad roads. I actually thought the state spent to much money on freeway and road "improvements".
  15. $5o million is a lot of money, but not for an amusement park. Sounds like a really cool exhibit at best.
  16. Good question. I'm curious too but I am pretty sure it is not on Fannin. Just from looking at renderings, it looks like it will be on the outskirts. Maybe southeast of Texas Children's.?.?
  17. Goodness that is gorgeous. Anyone have a current photo? Never seen it before. I wonder how many structures were built in the Bay Area along with Galveston back then.
