  1. McClain is just sending a message to all the free agents that NOBODY'S job is secure, so you better show him something. Can't see why you would do it this late in the season though. Why add chaos to an already disorganized team ? Let everyone finish out the season. It's not like this will motivate fans to go buy tickets. Alot of folks around here really like Garner. I do applaud McClain's choice in G.M. perhaps that will shut Hank Aarron up for a minute.
  2. I WAS da' man about 6 years ago, now I am working for da' man again. In about 20 years I will be able to own da' man.
  3. Yeah, a fool and his money soon parted. But if they had a Black with Red rims Schwinn Mag Scrambler. I may have to put down a couple of bills. I can remember how much I HATED that Huffy, I wanted anything BUT a Huffy back then. I wanted a Redline or a Schwinn or a Mongoose, but those were almost $200 back then. I finally got a Mag Scrambler in 1980, and it was stolen in front of a Stop and Go in 1982.
  4. Hey Joe, they had the same type of set up with the Globe store in Baytown. There was a Fisk tires that turned into a Discount Tires. I got my first NEW bike at a Globe store, it was a Monoshock Huffy, Christmas of 1975.
  5. That was because of Texas Blue Laws, which are still in effect, but mainly just for car dealers.
  6. They probably need to sell it to cover the loss on the stupid loan they just made to Countrywide.
  7. There may have been some form of beating going on in Eddie's SUV again. He seems to run into things when this occurs.
  8. No, I mean his, "inattentive driving" incident in Minneapolis. Although, they do seem to cross the same lines.
  9. ...and one of his legal troubles was one of the most hilarious things I have heard in awhile. It was in true Houston sports celebrity form. His "inattentive driving" incident in Minneapolis.
  10. Honestly, I agree with you about how to go about policing wayward parents. If a parent can't have the mental capacity to realize "Hey, I might be hurting my child by smoking around them." Then perhaps that parent does need a dose of reality by the issuance of a ticket to remind him/her that they are endangering their child and possibly slowly killing them in the process. It all boils down to the parent actually policing THEMSELVES ! As you and I are both parents, and you seem to have a level head on your shoulders, we both understand that we should never endanger our children, nor would we knowingly do so, certainly not by smoking around them in any given surrounding. You will agree that with some parents it just DOESN'T click, so they need a reminder. Spanking, that is a tool that need only to be used once or twice effectively in order to get the desired result. Children learn by mistakes, and when they make the mistake of getting a good whoopin' they learn to overcome making that mistake again. Punishments have to fit the crimes though. You can't spank the kid for EVERYTHING, then it becomes ineffective and just results in abuse. Everything becomes coherent when you take the time to read and let it sink in. I have never said that having a smoking-ban didn't make me happy. Remember, I am NOT a smoker. I just disagree how the law has been defined and as to who it pertains to. If I felt that I was in any type of danger from going into a bar, then I would NOT go into that bar. Just like why I DON"T go into one certain bar in town, because I know for a FACT that they let knives into the place.
  11. Just when I think I'm out, you pull me back in. Yes, unfair, and for the same reasons. Wouldn't you as a "POTENTIAL" customer, be able to have the choice of whether or not you want to get into that smelly smokey cab ? Forget smoking for a moment, just say you didn't like the way the cabbie looks or how he/she themselves smell, don't you have the right to choose whether they get your business or not ? Do cabbies have the right to choose their "POTENTIAL" client ? Not up on the HACK laws. What if a cabbie wanted to cater to smoking clients only, is that possible ? I can agree with cabbies not smoking while under hire if the customer is a non-smoker and if the cabbie chooses to take said customer, there is nowhere to go for the non-smoker in that situation and I see the health hazard there. If the client is a smoker though, would it then be ok for the cabbie to smoke ? It comes down to what is REASONABLE ? It's a little different with bars, you can move away from the smoker,or move to the open air patio or move to a bar that caters to non-smokers. As far as the smoking in cars issue where children are concerned, there is the rub. You make it sound like you don't consider the welfare of the children first, who don't have a choice as to who their parents are, over yourself and adults who should have enough sense as to who they want to do business with and not set foot into a smoking allowed establishment ? What is wrong with you ? Now you say it should be CPS' function to police traffic ? I am 200% sure an officer would be more likely to respond to a child trapped in a car with their parent smoking a pack of Camels in their face while traveling down I-10, over you coming up to them telling them about someone in violation of the smoking ordinance down at the Pub. Would you wait until you got home to call CPS if you saw a child not in their childseat, bouncing around the back of a Tahoe, or would you try to alert the Policeman driving in the next lane over from you ? The laws should be made to protect those that can't protect themselves. Newsflash....You can protect yourself from seconhand smoke, children in cars can't and children don't go to bars!
  12. Nice try at a spin there doc. I didn't misunderstand anything. You quoted me sir, not Red or Midtown, you quoted ME then you went on to type that I got "caught in my own contradictions." How can one possibly misunderstand your quote and comment ? Whaaa...whazat, must suck to lie, then get caught in it, HUH, Mr. Pachoulimonkey ? Talk about "weaseling", you were priceless, but you are now Pathetic, and not worthy of anymore of my valuable time.
  13. One, I never said you were a tofu-eating, pachouli wearing anything ? Apparently you feel guilty of such crimes though, as you continuously put yourself in this category of those types, at the mere suggestion that a healthfood store might be a place where you can go and not be exposed to the toxic fumes of secondhand smoke. And (B ), Where was the contradiction again ? I claim that there may be plenty of bar owners that might cater to your non-smoking ilk, I NEVER said anything about "bars not being able to sustain" without the asmatic crowd bringing in their hard earn dollars for that one fuzzy navel they caress all night then leave without tipping after these Erkels have struck out all night. Bars are for the public, yes, but for a specific public. An adult public that are old enough to choose for themselves whether they want to assume risk or not. Malls and Restaurants are geared for people of ALL ages, children who haven't the presence of mind nor experience to be able to think for themsleves NEED protection, if children were coming into Bars with their parents and lighting one up with their oldman, then I might jump on your smoking bandwagon. Be adult and realize you can and should have a choice, if all you want is to have a drink in a smoke-free enviroment, there are places for you. Apparently THAT doesn't fit your agenda though. You rather force YOUR will onto others. So, how much DO you Sanitarians get paid for writing citations ? Also, if you want to quote Holmes, then realize that the man had enough sense to move a little further down the bar or onto the next bar if smoking was allowed in his presence. You are PRICELESS ! ! !
  14. I agree, plenty of places in Houston. I really didn't mean to suggest that they are all ROWDY JUKEJOINTS were the booze is overflowing and drunken brawls breakout over who is doin a "dirty dance" with Lolita the shotgirl, while Bill Haley and the Comets are squelching out "rock around the clock" in the background. The point was that one or more of these things are going on in Bars, because that is what they are there for, and it seems that in most bars, even the sedate musicman type bars, that the common denominator is alcohol and smoking. I would still like to know where it is, because i need a hideaway every now and then. IS THAT IT the Hideaway on Dunvale ? I actually really like that place.
  15. So, where is this dive bar, where no music is played and where the patrons just nurse their drinks all night and ask if it's ok before to light up while they just sit on their keisters and talk about how they remember what dancing used to be like ? I have to see this place firsthand. Although, It kinda sounds like Shakespere's Pub on Memorial which I have been to before.
  16. Is there smoking ? Are you sure it is a BAR and not a tea room ?
  17. Good question, there is only ONE smoking cop in the city right now. It apparently is up to the patrons of the bar to STOP the smokers. HPD will have a fun fielding those assault calls. yeah, this smoking ban is gonna be a GREAT idea.
  18. Not talking about salad bars musicman. Maybe not so much loud noisy music at a Martini Bar, the rest definately happens. Although try having a conversation at the Davenport over the music on Saturday night !
  19. Those are some nice blinders you have on there monkey. The analogy is just as ridiculous as your cogent argument that sensible humans can't think or fend for themselves and Govt. has to step in on every occasion. Certain jobs have certain risks. If you don't like the risk then take your ball and go home. Quit crying how it is UNFAIR, when it isn't. You have a choice, you can either go in the bar and adhere to the bar owner's way he conducts business, or you can find a nice health food store to go hang out in where the owner doesn't want smoking in his establishment. Why is that so HARD for you and other nonsmoker proponents to understand ? Why is it neccessary to cater to the whiners. Yes, YOU the whiners. It is simple math, I don't like a place because there is smoking going on and I am deathly afraid that I will catch cancer or I will have to deal with an inconsiderate smoker. That establishment WILL NOT get my business, as there are waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too many drinking holes that may cater to me as a non-smoker, because the OWNER has decided that is the way he wants to do business. Certain jobs take certain risks. Skydiving instructor for instance. They are in serious danger of their lives everyday because some other nutjob like them wants to go skydiving. What if their chute doesn't open and the secondary fails ? What if the wannabe skydiver's chute fails ? Where does the responsibility lie ? I guess the instructor could sue the paying customer who is learning because he/she are the one that got them out there in the first place. Or, does the instructor have a choice as to whether or not they want to jump out of perfectly good airplane ? Wait, there are waivers to sign aren't there. There's your answer, we can have all the non-smokers sign a waiver or they can decide NOT to come into the bar. Oh, and if you had read the WHOLE thread you would have seen that I agree with non smoking in eating establishments, but where alcohol makes 51% percent of the business, that is a BAR, and loud noisy music, dancing, smoking, and getting your drink on to the point of intoxication is what happens in BARS. Perhaps you don't fully understand what a premise of a bar is ?
  20. Since you didn't know, the concealed gun law was sparked into motion after the Luby's restaurant massacre of 1991. It was enacted to help citizens protect themselves from incidents like that. This is a different matter to the smoking ban , but like I said, YOU wanted to "level the playing field" in bars. And by giving a ridiculous analogy to your perspective of the smoking ban it just shows why some laws should not be enacted. It is people like you though, that want to stifle business owners for your own gains. You want to make the scene but only on YOUR terms. It should not be up to folks like you to force the city to pass laws to watch out for people's health. Do you realize how long it would take for you to develop cancer by going into bars ? Why can't non-smokers go outside and breathe in the fresh air if they don't like the smoke in the bar ? Should all bars become open-air because of a few claustrophobics ? Claustrophobics are people too, don't they deserve not to feel closed-in at a bar. Perhaps enact a 3 foot rule like the strip joints ? I am sure that would go over like a fart in church. btw, your "figuring out which girls are going to have breath that smells like..." holds water like a sieve. What if the girl you are engaging was just outside on the porch having a square, because she wasn't allowed inside to smoke ? Monkey, I also disagree with you being returned by rudeness by a smoker. I don't know, maybe I was intimidating when they look at who is asking, but I have never been given any grief when I have asked someone to move their smoke away. They are usually a little embarrassed, and promptly move the ashtray. Red consciously moved his, I didn't have to ask him, but I didn't even notice that he was smoking, but beleive me, if it would have bothered me, I would have asked. It is ALL in the delivery when you ask. My favorite is when I asked them if they think they will be allowed to smoke in the ambulance ?
  21. Hmmm.... how about disbanding the concealed permit law for bars also then Reefermonkey ? You can carry your concealed weapon into your work or a mall, how about being able to carry your gun into a bar now since the alcohol consumption shouldn't matter right ? I mean since you want to "level the playing field." Bottomline.....Smoking and Drinking in bars have gone hand in hand since smoking and drinking were invented. If you are afraid for your lungs, then go work or play somewhere else. It would be likened to a hostile work enviroment, wouldn't you quit or transfer if you felt threatened at your work place but nobody else feels the same way ? If you didn't like where you were, why wouldn't you move on. I had a few drinks with ol' Red the other night, and I had to endure his toxic cancerstix for a couple of hours, I don't smoke nor have I ever, but, I never even thought about him smoking, it didn't bother me, because I knew I was in a friggin' BAR!... or were you smoking Red? LOL! Somebody was smoking in that joint.
  22. I almost literally fell out of my chair, I was laughing so hard. Now, if you wanted to start your own CULT, this is without a doubt, THE best place in the Houston Metro-area to do it. If David Coresh would have been around, I think he would have moved from Waco. Man, i still have the giggles. This house just proves that the good Doctor's taste is all in his mouth.
  23. No way, you don't put that wide spread of an age gap under one roof. 6-7 together 8-9 together 10-12 together. 6-8 then 9-12 has been the norm forever. New Caney, does or at least used to have 6th grade all by themselves, then 7-8 across the street, then 9-10 highschool. I just see way too much potential for problems, and I am just as concerned as Katie, about this type of enviroment.
  24. I went to this place on one of those Weekend Time-share seminars with my father back in the day. We played golf, and won a grandfather clock. I still remember it, I also remember that back then it was "so far out in the country!" LOL! Now it is just a hop, skip, and a jump away.
