  1. I can't think of anything in Houston that was "cool" in the 80's. I think that it pretty much sucked during that time. Well, there was that All-you-can-eat Steak place out by Sharpstown Mall. What the hell was it called?
  2. As for downtown in the 80's. Forget it. You left downtown after work quickly. Nobody wanted to be there after dark. Comparing downtown now to the way it was in 80's? Jeeze give me break. I think that everyone, no matter the age, thinks that things were better wherever they were at the time they were a kid. Kids typically remember the good things and see the world through rose colored glasses. When we get older we begin to see things how they really are.
  3. Safe in the 80's? - Houston's murder rate in the late 70's through 1985 was four time higher than it is now. No, Houston in the 80's was much more dangerous than it is now.
  4. Nah, the diaper is ok. I just don't have any nostalgia for Houston in the 80's. Do you remember trying to drive to IAH before the Hardy or Beltway Toll roads? What about Westheimer after they restriped it to add lanes. Buses didn't even fit within the new lanes. The whole city was a mess in the 80's. And then there were the Oilers, Jeeze.
  5. Oh Yes - Houston in the 80's 1. Oil bust 1982-1986 2. Unemployment of 9.3% in 1983 3. Dozens of Banks and S&Ls go bust 4. Shamrock Hotel torn down 5. Nolan Ryan traded to the Rangers 6. Much of Market Square destroyed 7. The Katy Prairie begins to be destroyed 8. Houston Gamblers formed (what a joke) 9. Sheila Jackson Lee first elected to office 10. West U tear down phase begins
  6. Most of the residents are relatively newly arrived immigrants. Unfortunately, as crappy as the Gulfton area is, it is a step up from where many of these folks came from. If you are in their shoes you tend to migrate to a place where there are others that you know and can relate to. Plus it is very cheap. I think that the only way Gulfton or any ghetto can be cleaned up is to first, get those folks mixed into the community as a whole.
  7. Hey this rendering is better. Designed by Marshall Strabala, Director of Design of Gensler, a global architecture and design firm, the Houston Ballet’s new 6-story, 10,219-square meters (110,000-square foot) facility will house practice facilities and executive offices. According to the Houston Business Journal (Aug. 4, 2008), the building is planned for Houston’s Central Business District, on Smith between Congress and Preston, and kitty-corner from the Wortham Center, where the Houston Ballet holds performances. Strabala is based at Gensler’s Houston office.
  8. The Lincoln Sheraton is where the Beatles stayed when they were in Houston in 1965
  9. Candelari's is very, very good. Star is over rated.
  10. Does anyone know the story behind the guy who jumped to his death yesterday afternoon in Downtown Houston? He jumped from around the 6th floor of the Smith street parking garage onto the sidewalk along Brazos.
  11. The Chron is the worst paper of any major city in America. Every page has over 3/4 of the page devoted to ads and most of the articles have appeared in other news papers during the preceding 3-4 days. Most of the article that are actually written by Chron staff are cheerleading something about Houston. Pure Crap.
  12. Is it just a coincidence that the Chron Building has a had a giant bag over it for a couple of years now? That paper is so cummy that they should just tie that bag up and dump it in the trash.
  13. George Bush the 1st had Rice in the running for his library. But he decided to give the G7 conference to Rice and Baker gave Rice the Baker Inst. thus A&M got the Bush library. Neither Bush went to the schools that got the libraries, A&M & SMU. I don't think LBJ went to UT and the Reagan and Clinton libraries are not even at a university.
  14. Will the library have a new bum section? That was a real problem with the old library. It is tough tying to study while sitting next to a smelly bum.
  15. If your home is old enough you can find past owners in the US census records. Census records for 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 have homes listed with street addresses. The records are available online at Houston Public Library website with a valid library card.
  16. I bet some bums started a fire in an old oil barrel or something. There are a lot of them in that area both east and west of of the freeway. They live up under the bridges in that area.
  17. I don't see the attraction of a Hotel at the Astro complex. It is too far from everything except the arena and stadium. I don't think those two venues can support a hotel of the size that is being discussed. I say tear the damn thing down and move on.
  18. I think calling the fire on White Oak bayou and Crockett a grassfire is a bunch of carp. It had thick black smoke when it started, like something oily was burning. I don't think grassfires look like this thing when they start.
  19. the last of the railyard building is coming down as I type. Something must be happening.
  20. Most of the building was occupied by Texaco and later Chevron. Chevron moved out in 2003 or 2004 which left most of the building vacant. Last year EOG moved in to several of the foors in the 30's. I think later this year Deloit is moving into several floors. At that point most of the building will be occupied. Last year the Plaza (ground floor) and the sky lobby were remodeled. Floors 2-12 are parking and a new parking garage is being built at the opposite corner of Bagby & Dallas which will be connected to Heritage Plaza by a tunnel.
  21. It can still be seen on Google Maps Satellite photos and they seem to be fairly up to date. Go to the south end of runway 17-35 of Scholes Field and look for the skanky green ponds.
  22. Can the public go in that place? Like, to cash a check or something.
  23. Does anyone have a link to a rendering of the new HPD Property Room? It is going up now.
