  1. That's crazy. I actually wrote out the accepted definition of the term before realizing what I had done. It was then I decided to drop the definition and instead just go with the term. Whooda thunk it.
  2. Which probably has nothing to do with the fact that its a virtual ghost-town come sun-down with no open storefronts and the only residential is all interior access with varying levels of security. But you choose to dress and style yourselves the same as those few bad apples - and then get mad, frustrated, or confused when others who don't understand your culture, but only have been exposed to its negative attributes via the local news media and Hollywood stereotype you the same as the bad apples you dress like? Is this not the same rant as Muslim Americans not understanding why non-Muslim Americans were not okay with them wearing some of their religious based clothing on airplanes or in certain public places post 9-11?
  3. I actually surprised someone hasn't stolen the bike. As for the shoes, it could literally mean be nothing more than kids playing around. It has no meaning except to those who knew who put them there.
  4. You have to have an audience before you can justify any production expenses. I think most of us were at work when the mayor was sworn in.
  5. I get your logic, its one of common sense. I have no doubt that between the two of them (Editor and his wife) they will probably own some sort of vehicle if they moved here. Its inevitable. I think Editor's just trying to find the most pedestrian friendly neighborhood in the city, where a car would not be needed on a daily basis.
  6. My top ten list working from dowtown out: 1. Minute Maid Park - I think this is what convinced everyone who didn't already work downtown that it was safe to return downtown. 2. Randalls - As the writer states, it helped bring stability to Midtown, allowing the newly developed townhomes and apartments to hold their occupancy, and finally reversed the donut effect of the last 30 years. 3. Hilton Hotel Americas - Everyone wants to give Discovery Green all the credit but it was this Hotel that anchored the GRB Hall E expansion, helped the Baseball district, brought the Toyota Center, and most recently Discovery Green, Discovery Tower, One Park Place, and the Embassy Suites. 4. METRO Redline Lightrail - Has helped establish Houston as more than just another post WW2 car and freeway town. Its slow going - but it is going. 5. Reliant Stadium - brought us to the modern age in sports arenas and brought us a Super bowl which helped fuel the early completion of the first segment of the metro light rail, main street redevelopment from UHD to Braeswood, and the redevelopment of the downtown entertainment district along Main street. 6. Westchase District - The creation and branding of this district helped bring in more major business to one area that any other part of the city. I think its organization and results is what secured the home sales and retail in the Andreu Airpark aka Royal Oaks neighborhoods/shopping centers. Even if all those living in the Royal Oaks country club don't work in Westchase, it surely helped sell the security of the new neighborhood. 7. Gulfgate Shopping Center - Breathed new life into a dying area's antiquated mall, and has since been used as a model for Northline and I suspect eventually Sharpstown. 8. Woodlands Market Street - Unless I'm mistaken, this was built before the Sugar Land Town Center. It should be the one that is given credit for ushering in a new age for the shopping experience by attempting to more accurately recreate the urban, pedestrian friendly retail/entertainment district. 9. Westpark Toll & Fort Bend Toll - Unlike any freeway redevelopment or expansion, these two were created from nothing, allowing other ways to connect to Houston's fastest growing suburbs, no doubt fueling that growth - as is evident all along and at the ends of each tollway. 10. Alamo Draft House - Because I didn't have a tenth development, its an awesome movie theater, and its spawned many imitators - which ultimately gives us all more options.
  7. I would be okay with legalizing anything "natural". Marijuana and psychotropic mushrooms come to mind. Anything that has to be process and/or refined like cocaine, meth, acid, or ecstasy should be left to the FDA to determine its distribution.
  8. No way! You must have went to the same church as I did growing up to believe this theory. I have many friends that smoke more marijuana than the average cigarette smoker smokes per day. They are all productive, employed, family-having (most), tax paying members of society. I think perhaps this is where we need to separate the truly hardcore drugs from the recreational drugs.
  9. I called no one a name or made any personal attacks so why attach me to this post?
  10. ORRRRR... That's 15,000+ cops who could be back on the streets, riding as partners to all our lone patrol officers who are most at risk! I'm all about giving law enforcement what they want, as long as they use it wisely. I think vice and narc are THE BIGGEST WASTE of money in any department next to the departments with traffic divisions that focuses on speed traps. Nothing makes me more mad than seeing a traffic cop hiding behind U-Turn and giving out tickets just to meet quotas. Oh wait, yeah - watching cops take themselves SOOOOOO seriously when working vice to bust "johns" picking up hookers. What a waste of time, money, and on duty resources on another victimless crime that should just be legalized and taxed.
  11. Please provide evidence to support your statement I bolded. EDIT: I meant to ask for you to provide evidence that the majority of people who committed a crime and are in prison NOT directly because of drugs are there because they were some how related to drugs. Does that make sense? I can't seem to find the proper phrasing of what I'm trying to ask. People also steal for other reasons. Should we make a list of all those reasons, like stealing to pay your mortgage, and then put all those who become behind on their payments in jail just because they might be forced to resort to stealing? Where do you draw the line? Arrest those who COMMIT the crimes. Legalizing certain drugs would breathe relief into our over crowded jails, as well as create new jobs, and best of all make money for the government. It would also eliminate the argument for using plea bargains with arrested drug users to get to the "big fish", as the dealer would be put out of business. Sure there would be organized crime, but that's going to be present with any commodity. Its only cops and far right wing conservatives that don't want that. Growing up Southern Baptist and the son of a career police officer I think I know better than anyone these type of fanatics.
  12. Moot. Why doesn't HPD just focus on arresting people for actually committing the crimes, versus arresting everyone who might commit a crime based on a small amount of drugs in their possession. I believe we put a stop to this practice when it was based on skin color - why would we allow it for something else? As for using the "users" to roll over on the dealers, that just seems to be working SO WELL already. Give me a break. The war on drugs is the biggest scam this government has ever pulled.
  13. It seemed like all she wanted to do is attack him. In fact, if you watch her commercials, they're ALL attacks. All she's done is go on the offensive since the Run-off started. Not to say that Locke hasn't, but some of Parker's commercials are just petty and almost seem like they are a parody of a real campaign. Yes, yes you are. The beltway 8 and I-10 interchange was under 12 feet of water at one point during a storm last year. Remember the ambulance that got flooded out? The Westside floods all over. What are biz-parts? I got the opposite impression. Parker has a hard time with her ability to speak. Her pacing is horrible and she always makes awkward pauses before spitting out the rest of her thought in a rush manner that trails off at the end.
  14. What a crock. This reason ALONE is reason enough to convince me that Lyko's is doing the right thing. This logic is something right out of a Stephen Spielberg epic. Oh wait, that's right - "pre-crimes" in Minority Report. Let's arrest everyone now for what they might do later. What a joke HPD.
  15. I agree that Bush failed to "step-up" during Katrina. However, being from Louisiana, I still hold all the blame on Louisiana's government (at both the state and local level) for failing first to serve its people in a time of need. I think though that most of the country doesn't see it that way and would agree that the blame was Bush's.
  16. So then what do you think the reason is? You're taking my answer and rationalizing it to the extreme. I am in no way a pacifist, but we had no legitimate reason to be in Iraq. That is the mind set of most conservatives I talk to. If that's how conservatives feel, just imagine how liberals feel. Bush Jr. = Iraq War = Hate.
  17. Why is no one talking about LA's use of carbonite!? Just kidding. As always Houston is behind the curve of other cities, but at least we're still on track (no pun intended).
  18. To not have an agenda is an agenda in of itself. And by your post-for-post replies, I'd say you definitely have one. I applaude Tory for remaining polite however, in the face of your rude replies. Back on topic.. I'm curious how many we would have if we DID have traditional zoning laws, a much smaller city and many incorporated communities surrounding us.
  19. Went to happy hour at RA Friday then strolled around the grounds. Its very nice. I think come this time next year it will really be something to see, with all the shops open for business. Oh, parking was a bear - but we got lucky and caught a parallel spot right in front of RA!
  20. You mean SAVE my cash? Jeez, do you really practice what you preach? Why should I have to spend money on something I don't NEED in order to get a tax credit? I don't remember doing ANYTHING to get my tax-rebate check from G.W., short of what I already did - which was to work, pay taxes, pay my bills, and spend/save responsibly with what was left.
