  1. Just picture it 10 stories shorter than this classic: Just kidding of course. I couldn't help it. When I read Hines 47, that's all I could think of! FYI - There are no good pictures of 57 sauce on web..
  2. Can anyone post a picture of what was there before?
  3. The lights don't look nearly as intrusive as made out to be. Perhaps an actual picture from a Commerce Tower resident, from their window - so that we can truly feel their pain?
  4. I'm glad someone started this thread this morning, because I had a few questions concerning the current. What is "stray current"? Does it affect buildings/foundations? Does it affect people (shocks, cause cancer, etc..)? Will all this "stray current" affect the progess of the future light-rail routes? LAYMAN'S ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE! (That goes for you too Niche!)
  5. Efforts to encourge more residents downtown are futile anyway without the development of more residential buildings! And even if you could cram 50,000 people downtown, its not going to dent Houston's suburban sprawl. The only thing more Houston could do at this point is densify itself with the addition of more highrise residential, and more public transit. For a post WW2 city in the south built on endless swamps and cow pastures, I really think we're doing okay. I don't see one non-architectural prize-winning garage on Main St. spiralling this city of control. I'd stick with the lights in the window arguement personally.
  6. Certain attitudes about downtown living on this board have lead to that assumption. There's quite an air of arrogance in this thread about how evil the Hines company is and how misfortuned the residents of Commerce Towers are. I can understand the lights shining into the windows, especially since the resdential building was there first. But beyond that, and without zoning, you still have to consider the garage forward progress - whether you like its design or not. Its creating 950 additional parking places that were not there before. At most a surface lot would have held at most one-tenth of that amount.
  7. Is he really? I'm going to have to disagree with you here. Granted, I disagree with Niche's presentation of his views on this topic. Still though, I would hardly call him a "baiter", much less the resident baiter. Why are you always so quick to cast stones Nmain? I have to whole-heartedly agree with this opinion. If you choose to live in the densest commercial district of a city, I doubt you're ever going to be given much leeway as a resident - nor should you. Our downtown is a place of business first, entertainment second, and finally third - residence. You have to remind yourself, this is Houston - not Manhattan.
  8. Unless you plan on shopping, you probably will be. It's not much of a destination just yet.
  9. I'm talking about the area south of Airport Drive and west of SH 6. Neighborhoods like Village of Oak Lake, Pheasant Creek, Summerfield, Orchard Lakes, Chelsea Harbor, New Territory, Riverpark, & Greatwood. Those are all in the Sugar Land ETJ. I really doubt Sugar Land wants any of the crap north of Airport anyway, with exception to Aliana. Neighborhoods like Woodbridge and Kingsbridge will be forever associated with and lost to neighborhoods like Mission Bend, Towne West, and Eaglewood Hell, I know FBISD would gladly give away our corner of the ISD to ANYONE willing to take the future inter-racial quagmire off their hands. I'd be curious to see what Richmond & Rosenberg's plans are. I known that at FM1464 & FM1093 I have a Richmond address, even though I'm a good 20 minutes away from the city limits.
  10. There's plenty of unincorporated land to the north & west that SL has their eye on. So they still have the potential to grow "out" as well.
  11. This is awesome for SL. I know I'm going to be in the market in 7 to 10 years for a new home. I had all my eggs in the Telfair basket, but I'd love even more to live behind the char-house.
  12. Not sucking down gas fumes down the entire ride wouldn't hurt its charm one bit.
  13. I think that pretty much sums up the actual "free" status of the St. Louis Zoo as compared to Houston's Zoo. I went Friday and was very impressed with what I saw & for what I paid. What no one has mentioned (unless the article did, which I didn't read) is that nearly a quarter of the park was closed for redevelopment. The southern most portion of the Zoo, just north of Memorial Herman Hospital is closed off for some new exhibits. This along with a very interactive Children's Zoo & other various up to date exhibits could most likely not be afforded without these pay increases. If anything though, they do need to improve the train. It's second rate at best. Oh, and For the record, we DO NOT need more zoos. We need to improve the quality & animal living conditions of the ones we ALREADY have.
  14. Not the Family Courts Building! I actually enjoy its design (that is, if I'm thinking of the same building..).
  15. Its about damn time considering how long we've been having Staples commercials locally here in H-Town.
  16. You need a "neither" option. I'm writing in "neither". I don't care for it, but it does contribute to the depth of our skyline.
  17. Did you see the steel frame of a building? If so that was, as Red said, a new fire station. If not (and I say this only because you said specifically "digging up a lot.."), then I have no clue.
  18. The blonde bimbo on the right was a wanna-be Playboy Playmate once upon a time.
  19. This is actually nice. Too bad we'll never see one - except maybe downtown, perhaps.
  20. Man, would you make for a good fiction writer.
  21. At last year's HOA meeting we were told that TXDOT has already done all the studies, and is in the final stages of preparation for expansion. This year's meeting is this Tuesday, so I'll get the latest info. Channeltwonews: Could you most more of the story for all of us "non-subscribers" to that website?
  22. You can have angled parking. The point is to have a layer of cars between the pedestrian and the traffic to act as a natural barrier. This encourages the pedestrian walk along a busy street yet still feel comfortably safe from the traffic. Besides, Parallel parking takes too long to accomplish - especially in this town where jerk ride your bumper.
  23. I thought this was the church that was struck by lightning? There were even church members inside that heard it. Or was that another church in 4th (or even 6th) ward perhaps?
