  1. I have a feeling that people's feelings "MAY" change a bit if they were to show a rendering, at least as far as the Black-Eyed Pea part goes. I'm definitely against anything that takes away the theater itself.
  2. TheNiche, you seem to echo my dad's sentiments on clothing. That's why he only owns Dickey's coveralls. They are economical, easy to put on, and comfortable. Not to mention ugly.
  3. Between Shepard and Yale on 610? Is this that area that was torn down less than a year ago to make way for a shopping center? If so, how has it turned out? Is it noteworthy or just another frontage road strip center?
  4. I graduated class of 99, and was told the exact same thing concerning evans (although with the correct number of floors )
  5. Living abroad, I've seen first hand a dramatic difference in the way news is covered and portrayed in the US. It's not lying, and it's not covering the truth, but it is different. The spin that is put on for American viewers on CNN, Fox News, etc. is no different than what Al-Jazeera spins for its audience. There is a huge amount of coverage on the rape and murder story, so much so that it dominates every facet of the Iraqi war. TJones, it is not the same footage of the statue being toppled being replayed over and over again. But it is footage of groups of Iraqis that just don't like the American occupation. Do these foreign networks show the countless people who DO appreciate what America is trying to do? Sometimes, but mostly no.
  6. I thought I'd chime in with this post to break up the flow of the back and forth (and valueless, might I add) commentary between 1stWord and nmain. What's with all this "infantile" accusations? Aren't both of you of the older persuasion? I'm going to get killed by friendly fire... Can we get back on topic? China has finally put some pressure on North Korea--something that they have not yet done before.
  7. I'm profoundly disappointed in the design. While I understand the need to address security issues, I feel that this is nothing more than a big box design with an antenna stuck on top that does not in any way blend harmoniously with the square top. If you compare the architecture with the style of buildings going up in other countries (ironically enough, the middle east), it just looks boring. I'm hoping that my opinion will change when I see fully realized renderings of the exterior, and not just elevations.
  8. Up until November 2005, my wife and I lived in Houston until I accepted an assignment in Tyumen, Russia (in Siberia). At that point, I bought a camera with the intent of documenting the time spent abroad. This forum has been a lifeline for me being over here (something I know many of you can understand being away from the US). I would like to invite all of you to visit my photoblog that has now gone online. I've enjoyed much of the photography that has gone up on HAIF, and I know there are many wonderful photographers here. The photos are here for everyone's enjoyment, although I would greatly appreciate any constructive criticism that anyone can offer. Coming soon: Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, southern France (September). Thailand (December). Maldives (April 07). Potentially South Africa (next fall). The Wayward Traveler Enjoy, Micah
  9. Yep. My wife and I are living in Tyumen, Russia (Siberia). Maybe I'll start a thread with some pictures of life over here.
  10. Pictures! Somebody post pictures! "A 400-foot-wide circular plaza, tentatively designated "the Great Space," where transit riders would disembark into a setting with greenery, an open-air market and other amenities." However, this is somewhat diminshed by the 2000 car sea of concrete.
  11. Wait....they're really happening? With all this negativity on projects around Houston, I just figured that this wasn't going up. I guess it could still pull an Orion...
  12. Montrose, what part of Houston (or subburb) is this? It's beautiful!
  13. Guys, I hate to say this, but that square of 60's facade has been missing since the Super Bowl. The owner was quoted as saying that he wanted to restore the exterior and put a French cafe up on top (there's a thread around here with a photo). NOTHING has been done on this since this was announced over 2 years ago. Please, someone tell me that I'm wrong...
  14. I'm not an accountant, but it seems to me that Six Flags was desperate for the sale of this land to post in a particular month--perhaps to offset a known loss expected to be taken in the same financial period?
  15. Does it pain anyone else to see that the designers of the Hobby Center turned their back to the bayou? Now, with this nice water feature, there is nothing but an uninviting, imposing, featureless wall of brick to greet you as you step from the landing. Sigh... Maybe they can do a "renovation" ala the Houston Parks Shops
  16. I'm a bit confused here. I thought that the Edge is going up where the map shows Camden Central City to be. Which is right?
  17. Hilarious! Single best reply yet!
  18. After looking at these pictures, I'm convinced that if the 2727 highrise project does not pan out, there is NO WAY that this prime piece of real estate is going to sit undeveloped for long. Look at the potential. Personally, I would not be disappointed if a highrise is not put there. I would much rather see something similar to the mid rise development across the street with ground floor retail. It would be a better complement and do more to build a walkable, mixed-use area. By the way, the city has to do something about the power lines. What a visual blight. Is there any plan to redo the road here? If so, this would be a good time to address this problem.
  19. One thing that no one has brought up yet are balconies. Every new highrise in Houston has one and it seems to be expected, especially if you are going to have a view like this one will offer. The picture in New York posted earlier in this thread is very similar to the renderining in regards to the crown of the building, but I suspect that the rest of the building will not be as "New Yorky" as some here would like (including me).
  20. I would consider going into a bit more detail on your Applied Arts degree, perhaps highlighting how it is relevant to the job you are applying for. If it is not directly applicable, then move it towards the end to emphasize your work experience which I find to be more relevant. There is no rule stating that education needs to go at the top. As you probably know, resumes only get about 6 to 10 seconds of review before being separated in a pile for trash or one for longer look. That said, I recommend re-writing your job experience at Madco to include short, concise, bulleted items that stand out. I found myself reading through that part without really taking in what you were trying to say. Finally, being nitpicky, I might prefer to not include "we" or "I" in your job histories. Third person keeps a level of formality.
  21. This doesn't bode well for my vacation there the first week of May. Here's hoping somebody sorts this out.
  22. Best place to prove to your Austin friends that Houston is just as quirky: Texas Junk.
  23. Looks good and all, but will the same tenants be there? It looks too upscale and West Gray-like for the stores that are there.
  24. Many moons ago before the Great Message Board Wipe, I wrote a post about a flight I took from Ellington on route to Love Field (via IAH). You flew over the Hardy Rail Yard Area and Victory in Dallas. From the air, you got a whole new appreciation for how much they approximate each other in terms of their location to their respective downtowns and their size. Sure, Victory is technically larger, but Hardy has the potential to register as significant an impact.
