  1. I'm hoping this encourages redevelopment along S. Main and Buffalo Speedway. For example, places like The Broadmead and Mainstream Apartments seem like they'd be ripe for redevelopment after this. I mean, look at all this potential student housing: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/29.6714916,-95.4247134/29.6721696,-95.4252312/@29.6836149,-95.425058,1523m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!4m1!3e0
  2. Baseball in the rendering is interesting though, since that's not as casual as a soccer field (which they show as well). To me, it implies some level of student life and possible housing. If no actual sports team, it seems like they're prepping for more than just a research institute. If so, I think the impact of this school on the surrounding areas (esp south main corridor) could get really interesting. There is a lot of (cheaper) land in large parcels around this part of town. Lots of older apartment complexes as well.
  3. My wife just took our daughter to a show here last weekend and loved the venue. There is a nice courtyard for hanging out, the sound system was awesome, and the venue was high quality. You can even pay $5 to park in the garage across the street for the apartments currently under construction.
  4. I'm flying to Belize early November on SWA and can't wait to avoid IAH. Hobby is so much closer and easier for me. We plan to take advantage of more of SWAs flights from Hobby.
  5. I dealt with this group years ago when they first formed. My guess is they'll want everything Midtown already has with no understanding of how a TIRZ works. They'll come up with pie in the sky wishes that can never be implemented, and will blame everyone else as to why they can't have every irrational demand met. Plus, they'll want their needs prioritized over poorer neighborhoods.
  6. Larry is right. It's for the construction about to begin on the tower they're building on top of the existing structure.
  7. So it's better use is an empty dirt parking lot the rodeo does nothing with for most of the year? They own it, so why not actually do something with it that could be used year round?
  8. I had a crazy thought about the currently vacant Astroworld plot that the rodeo owns and parks on. What if the city, rodeo, NRG, Texans, maybe Harris County, teamed up and turned that plot of land back into Astroworld... but call it something like Rodeoworld? Think about it, it could be the most Texas'd up theme park, awesomely touristy thing around that would bring in tons of $$$ to the rodeo throughout the year (vs just the rodeo time). I'm talking a huge wooden coaster that rivals the Cyclone (maybe call it the Lone Star), an old west town, rebuild the Viper and call it the Rattlesnake, etc. It would make money for the rodeo year round, attract tons of tourists, make the rodeo even crazier during rodeo time, and could spur development around the area. What do you all think? Could something like that ever work?
  9. I love the Tesla, but nothing beats a minivan when it comes to opening a door in tight spaces with kids.
  10. You have to be joking. The Catholic church preserves historical buildings better than anyone. Ever been to Europe? The oldest building in every town tends to be a Catholic church.
  11. Frank's will have a never ending line out the door once this is finished.
  12. I never thought I'd like the GRB so much. The entire project (from Texas shaped pool to reducing lanes in front and adding restaurants) is genius. It actually looks like something tourists would rave about.
  13. Just now, pulled up to Central Nissan to see how free charging works. A dude plugged the car in for me and told me to come inside and have free coffee. They don't even have service like that at gas stations! Watching ESPN, drinking a mocha, and getting free "gas" during lunch... pretty good first day impression.
  14. Well I bought the Leaf last night. It's nice knowing I'll never visit a gas station again. Cost me 11k used for top of the line 2012 with all extra features (including 30 min quick charge port and solar panel for the 12v). I live in the loop so the range is more than I'll ever need.
  15. Test drove a Nissan Leaf the other day and might be getting one. It was insanely fun to drive thanks to the instant torque. Anyone here have one or have thoughts on it? I was surprised by the amount of room inside it.
  16. Looks like an awful place to work. I can't imagine the heat generated between those buildings, along with trying to make it to a meeting on time (run across the campus vs hopping on an elevator and pushing a button). I see lots of nearby places to eat... um well I guess cafeteria food.
  17. Gates are also useless on common properties because there's always someone that leaves it unlocked or props the gate open. Then, you have the cost to maintain them.
  18. As someone with Asthma, I appreciate clean air since it.. well... let's me live better. I think everyone benefits from being able to breathe... so to me the science debate detracts from the simple fact that we need clean air to live. People against reducing air pollution levels (who can't get beyond their political beliefs) are just plain moronic and annoying. Here's a tip for you non-Asthma people... try breathing through a straw for a couple hours and tell me how you feel. That's how it feels on days when smog engulfs our city. People in China are experiencing these issues now (who don't even have Asthma) because they allowed business to trump health.
  19. Sorry, I was trying to say that the demographics of the area will easily support even more retail in this area. The current options are great but the center itself feels tired and the layout is built around the car. I'd also love to see more restaurants and retail fill up some of the concrete sea around it.
  20. The area around Meyerland Plaza is full of million dollar mansions so I would say it's well beyond redeveloped. This shopping center is the only thing lagging in this area.
  21. I'm going to make a bold prediction here... when this thing is built (and we have flights leaving it that take a mere couple of hours to get to Europe or the middle east)... you'll see major oil giants leaving the energy corridor and Woodlands and flocking back Downtown. What self-respecting company will fly high priority business associates into Houston and then have them endure a car ride to a far flung suburb across town that takes almost as long as the flight itself?
