  1. Texas A&M doesn’t need the space yet (they’ve still got plenty of shell space to build out in Discovery Tower) and can’t just build a vanity project with no purpose. They certainly cannot build an office building with university resources that would then be leased to the private sector. It would be very bad for them to try, from an ethical governance perspective, and would rightly invite the scrutiny of the Legislature as this would be an arm of the state government competing with the private sector. There is a fine line where a private developer can do it on university land by leasing the land which is (or was) the arrangement with Medistar here.
  2. Half a city block x11 (plus some more oddly shaped portions of blocks) is quite a sizable amount of land. Especially for walking/running trails. As long as the city has any say, I don’t see parking as a serious suggestion.
  3. Engineering Classroom and Research Building (ECRB). This will frame a nice new quad for campus. The site where it's going is a bit oversized for campus. It will be 51,000 sf and will break ground in the Spring. The terrace will be a fantastic touch and is reminiscent of the Zachry Engineering Education Complex in College Station. Makes sense as both buildings serve a similar purpose, but on two different campuses. https://www.tamug.edu/adminaux/ECRB/ECRB.html Additional site plans and information on the first phase of infrastructure for the new dock. This will support the new training ship, the Lone Star State. https://www.tamug.edu/adminaux/SUP/SUP.html Upper Texas Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital and Educational Outreach Center. This is in the fundraising process and has no formal start date yet. It will be located on the west side of Seawolf Parkway. https://www.tamug.edu/SeaTurtleHospital/index.html
  4. The variance request for the single family development, dubbed "Casaritaville" was denied by the city but construction equipment has begun arriving at the site for the Margaritaville resort. Pile-driving cranes have arrived so construction is likely imminent if it hasn't already begun. https://www.galvnews.com/news/construction-begins-on-margaritaville-resort-near-galvestons-east-beach/article_dfe754b0-7929-5d33-bc37-a7c00a63e4ef.html
  5. Dickinson City Council approved the tax incentives for the Water Street development on Wednesday. Below is the latest site plan. It's disappointing that the apartments were removed from the project but hopefully the large surface lot could be used for future expansions of the project. While the multifamily was removed, the hotel was upgraded from a standard suburban Marriott brand to a boutique hotel. Construction is expected to begin in the spring. https://www.galvnews.com/news/dickinson-approves-87m-water-street-project/article_69db0596-32cb-56ff-8f0a-e50102647dce.html
  6. Backyard Brewing Company will be building a taproom and microbrewery in downtown Dickinson. The city is also building the "Picnic Ground" across from city hall.
  7. Rendering posted to Mayor Sean Skipworth's Recall Defense website.
  8. Norwegian Prima has arrived in Galveston. Carnival Jubilee arrives on Wednesday. Norwegian Escape arrives next year and Norwegian Viva arrives the year after. https://www.cruisehive.com/norwegian-cruise-lines-prima-begins-full-season-from-texas/118420 https://www.galvnews.com/news/galveston-to-welcome-carnival-jubilee-wednesday-as-ship-comes-in/article_2bc1164e-4c1d-50e1-ba01-1499da0d48da.html?block_id=531919 https://www.ksat.com/news/texas/2023/12/14/norwegian-cruise-line-announces-new-cruise-out-of-galveston/
  9. Color scheme (especially the red truss) reminds me of George R. Brown. I wonder if that was intentional.
  10. The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents will today consider negotiating and executing a lease with the Johnson Space Center for 32 acres for the Space Collaboration Facility. The legislature appropriated $200 million for this in the Texas Space Commission package. https://www.tamus.edu/regents/wp-content/uploads/sites/28/2023/12/AGENDA-December-12-2023-Special-BOR-Meeting-Telephonic.pdf
  11. Does the article specify if any of the buildings are actually mixed use or is this just multiple uses on the same property?
  12. Axiom Space continues its growth across the space suburbs with the opening of a manufacturing facility at the Houston Spaceport. Such an exciting time in Space City. https://communityimpact.com/houston/bay-area/business/2023/12/07/axiom-space-cuts-ribbon-on-newest-facility-at-houston-spaceport/ Images from LinkedIn:
  13. I suspect the Parcel B building (Texas A&M's site that was announced last year to be a joint project with UH) will get moving now that UH has a source of funding for it (the new Texas University Fund), although it is not yet on UH's capital plan (it is on Texas A&M's).
  14. Updates at Flyway! First up: Pop Stroke is under contract and The Rustic is in discussions with the city of Webster to bring a location. Second: Flyway Boardwalk, which is actually just a sidewalk.
  15. Some additional info found from a NAL-JSC presentation by the director of center operations at NASA JSC: Artemis Rock Yard. 4 phases, will allow for suit, vehicle, and equipment testing. The TAMU Proving Ground referred to is the Innovation Proving Grounds at the Texas A&M RELLIS Campus in Bryan. The Innovation Proving Grounds were built for the Army Futures Command with an appropriation from the Texas Legislature. Current and Future Projects: The water tower, Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Annex, and Building 37 demolition were previously mentioned. The Operations and Maintenance Facility is Project N1 from the short term plan in my last post. Building 49 (Vibration and Acoustics Test Facility) is being put out to bid for industry to lease. Also of note was that a new engineering facility would be built across the street from Building 13 and Building 15, beginning next fiscal year. JSC will be creating a new master plan beginning next year as well. The last major point of discussion was Texas A&M's facility at Exploration Park. This is moving through the planning phases. An interesting outcome of that project is that Space Center Houston's lunar/martian surface simulation facility will no longer be moving forward as currently planned. Texas A&M will build those two facilities and duplication doesn't make sense. If Space Center Houston includes Texas A&M's facility as part of their tours, the university will have scored a major recruiting coup. JSC expects to have private commercial space companies take up space in Exploration Park as well.
  16. The Emergency Operations Center is now complete and an addition to Building 31 (Lunar Sample Laboratory Facility) is either underway or now complete to create the "Advanced Sample and Asteroid Curation Facility). Building 37 (Lunar Receiving Laboratory) is slated for demolition. Additionally, a water tower is now under construction. https://projects.constructconnect.com/details/6393252-awarded-task-order-demolition-of-building-37-ancillary-buildings-structures-copy&find_loc=texas-77058 JSC Master Plan:

  18. Classical architect Duncan G. Stroik created a master plan for St. Mary's quite a while ago. It isn't called out by name but it's pretty obvious if you're familiar with the seminary. Present Conditions (at time of master plan, a building has been added across from the Beran library since) Short-medium term? Long term or maximum buildout? https://www.stroik.com/portfolio/seminary-in-the-southwest
  19. City of College Station councilman Bob Yancy said an 800 bed complex is breaking ground "imminently". I believe it is this one, Nova Northgate. There's also a recent TDLR filing for it with a start date of December 1. 2023. This one will make an incredible new gateway into urban College Station from the west. https://texags.com/forums/35/topics/3418217/replies/66162507 https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/TABS/Search/Project/TABS2024004326 He also gives a nice vision/prediction for the next 15 years for the city. In this, he says there are half a dozen high-rises in Northgate in the planning and permitting process now. https://texags.com/forums/35/topics/3418217/replies/66162232
  20. The Industrial Distribution Building No. 1 is now open. https://readcenter.tamu.edu/about-us-2/the-rellis-campus/ https://engineering.tamu.edu/news/2023/09/texas-am-university-celebrates-opening-of-new-industrial-distribution-building.html The Animal Reproductive Biotechnology Center is now underway. The Rosenthal Meat Science and Technology Center will receive a new ~$125 million, 75,000 sf facility adjacent to the Animal Reproductive Biotechnology Center. https://www.txamfoundation.com/Spring-2023/Did-You-Know.aspx The RELLIS STEM Education Center was recently approved for construction. RELLIS Campus Data Center should (finally) begin construction next year. Although the mayor of Bryan on a radio interview recently said it had already started. https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/TABS/Search/Project/TABS2024004718 The Quantum and Artificial Intelligence Chip facility is on the capital plan for $100 million dollars. Not sure where on the campus it will be located. Additionally, $30 million were appropriated by the legislature for a hypersonic wind tunnel. Blinn's second building at RELLIS is now open. 21. I expect the left hand entrances and exits to be moved to the right hand side as part of the project to rebuild 45 South from 69 to the Beltway. There's a PEL that should be finishing up this year underway. Gulf Freeway PEL Study
  22. Significant overhaul in the works for a portion of Main St. downtown. This project would permanently remove vehicle lanes from these sections of Main St. and raise the grade of the former roadway to sidewalk level. https://www.houstontx.gov/council/committees/qol/20231025/More-Space-Main-Street.pdf
