CleanWater Express Car Wash At 641 W. 17th St.
innerlooper replied to Amlaham's topic in The Heights
Anyone know where the "tunnel" is going? They can't build in the alley (38' wide). Their other Houston and TX locations are all away from residential.... here its right by townhouses and apts. Tunnel discharge end tends to be very noisy-- fans. -

According to GIMS, the main waste line is an 8" on Commonwealth, which is already pretty loaded up from upstream (Nevada) and from the 50 unit studio apts across the street. Runs all the way to Fairview before hitting a 12". Can an 8" line handle 30+ new units?- 17 replies

I was under the impression that this project was shot down by COH Planning Commission late last year. Issues with traffic, mostly. In their proposal, cars would exit the "tunnel" at 18th and then have to turn left to get back onto the lot to the "free" vacuums. Also they cant enter directly from Shepherd because of scheduled bike lane. -
Permits seem to show some hold-ups with the fire sprinklers.

Numbering may have something to do with how the blocks are staggered. This is from 1925, before Montrose was run north of W'heimer.

There's no telling. They may very well know about bars not allowing handguns. Welcome to Fallujah on the Bayou. I'm not advocating that "everyone" should be able to carry in bars. CHLers have been fingerprinted and vetted by the FBI, and have a very low incident rate regarding any criminal activity. I live about ten blocks from this murder and I even carry when mowing the lawn. But I do keep my finger away from the trigger, unlike Howard H above.

The 'jackers are enabled by TX law, which prohibits CHLers from carrying in bars. Hence any law-abider leaving a bar can be expected not to be armed and easy pickings.

RE construction at corner of 17th and Yale. I take it this is the SE corner, 128 W 17th. The lot at one time had two two-story houses on it, built in the 80s, with hardboard siding. Apparently they had multiple mortgage liens on them, part of the whole Couch Mortgage fiasco. Dean Couch was convicted of fraud in 1992 and committed suicide in the Harris Co jail using one of those electric coffee cup heaters. Anyway the places stood empty for years, and it was a real study in how hardboard siding can and will deteriorate over time if not kept sealed and painted. It hung from studs like seaweed at low tide. None of the lienholders would compromise, and at some point the buildings were torn down and the lot was used as a garden for many years. Looks like it became valuable enough to satisfy all the interested parties and improvements can again be added.

It was Coral (or Carl) Eugene Watts who killed and left at least one body in a wooded area to the west of Houston Ave/ White Oak intersection. Back then it was heavy scrub and could easily conceal a victim. From one site: "April 16, 1982: Carrie Jefferson, 32, was strangled and then stabbed twice as she returned home from her job at Houston's downtown post office. Watts buried Jefferson's body along White Oak Bayou." General info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Eugene_Watts
