Just Wondering does anyone know what is going on with 5301 Bissonnet. I drove past it this morning and there was a backhoe and it looks as if there has been some asphalt ripped out. I hope that demolition hasn't been approved.

Edit: Drove by again today, and the backhoe is gone.

I was driving past on Monday and I saw they had already broken all of the glass out. It's definitely coming down! Very sad.

I wonder are there at least any plans to salvage any of its parts? Like the special lighting used on the outside or the tiki sculptures?

See http://www.5301.org for some awesome pictures. Looks like that site hasn't been updated though with any news of the demolition.

Sorry for being a pessimist, but seems like if someone was allowed to salvage the significant architectural elements, we'd have heard about it.

From all appearences, we're dealing with a corporate pinhead culture. They see no advantage to working with people, and their lawyers probably tell them they might be liable if someone is hurt at the site.

Where is the leadership in our local historic/preservation societies? Sometimes the only thing that works is to get a mob of pissed-off people with picket signs, and some bad publicity for the developers.

It has been destroyed!  This morning all that was left was a heap of rubble.  It did not appear that anything was saved unless it had been taken offsite previously.  I am very sad that no one was able to save it. :(

They didn't even save the funky sculptures? Grrrrr! What is it with this city?!?

Kudos to the organization and good folks behind it. Y'all do great work and eventhough I'm over a 1000 miles away, I support y'all %100 and wish I could be a part of it.

This is ridiculous. The place where the bank was is still vacant. Does anyone know what is happening with it. It is just dirt surrounded by wood and chainlink fence with plastic coverings slowly tearing off of the chain link. Is it because they haven't gotten a permit or something, because couldn't they have just left it up then.

There has been no activity at the site since October.

This is a wonderful organization. To visit their website, click here.

Please feel free to contribute any observations, pictures or questons about Modern architecture on this thread.

I was amazed at a list of Main Street, Houston addresses that were posted recently. My main interest is old Houston restaurants. Are old criss cross directories available on the web anywhere? What other resources are there. I believe the list of 1969 Main Street addresses was posted by "Space Age". I would love to take Main Street in closer to Downtown Houston.... also, I'd like to see Telephone Road in the 50's and 60's, as well as Main Street in the 50's.

Thanks,

Jack Tyler

I don't think the cross-directories are online, but they are at the library.

From what I can tell, the restaurants faded out on going north on Main beyond Rice U. until you got to today's Midtown, which was then South End. In that area there were Cokers, George Kelley's, Weldon Cafeteria (buildings still standing), Ritz Dining Room, Old Mexico, and some drive-ins around Gray (all demolished).

The restaurants I know about on Telephone are the Tel-Wink diner (still there) and the Las Vegas Inn and Old Hickory Inn (long gone). There were some others in Third Ward and OST. Let me know if you need more info.

Sorry for bringing up such an old thread, but here is an update on 5301 Bissonnet.  There is a rendering.  It is pretty much just a glass box.  I want to say Kirksey is the architect.  It is now up to two floors, but no facade or anything like that has been put on yet.

This is 5301 Bissonnet, the building being discussed here. It is still too painful a loss to discuss. There are definite problems with the replacement building. Karma?
