History Magazine Examines

Preservation in Houston

The Houston Review of History and Culture will publish a special Spring 2006 issue on historic preservation. The magazine will examine the different ways in which the preservation of historic structures has shaped the physical, social and economic landscape of the greater Houston area. The Spring edition will include numerous case studies from across the region and explore a variety of preservation issues, both past and present.

Previously published by the Houston Library Board from 1978 through the late 1990s, the original Houston Review offered essays about the city's past. Much of the known detail about the evolution of Houston first came to light in these articles. When tighter budgets forced the library to suspend publication of the journal, the Center for Public History at the University of Houston stepped in, giving this important outlet for Houston's history a new home. With a new style and its fourth volume in progress, the biannual Houston Review of History and Culture balances thoughtful, innovative articles and interviews with lively, provocative photographs documenting our city
