Weird Flying Black Bug

Recommended Posts

If anyone can help me identify a bug...

It had the same body and head as the pelecinid wasp, minus the large wings (it flies), and long stinger. It has two pedals on its back that constantly tick. The antennas tick too.

I've seen one every so often and saw one today.

The Texas Insect and Bug Identifier website wasn't any help.

This is the wasp that it looks similar too.

Would it be any of the bugs shown on here?

It looks pretty close to the one with no details minus the baboon butt.

I'm starting to think they may be adolescents of some wasp/mud diver variety but it didn't look like it had a stinger. It was quick. And I'd prefer not to stick my hand/phone too close.

I think we have a winner.

Ensign Wasps are in the family Evaniidae, and get their name because they move the abdomen part of their bodies up and down as if they are signalling with a flag.

According to the page I quoted, they kill cockroaches (and there's a video of one in motion):

Guess I need to roll out the welcome mat for a few more of them, as the local cockroach population has been on a sharp upswing with the onset of summer.

Agreed, they are welcome.

Luckily I have yet to see those of which we do no speak.
