RRI Energy, located in 1000 Main, is merging with Atlanta-based Mirant. The combined company, to be named GenOn, will be headquartered in Houston.

Bear in mind, most of these employees are not headquarters employees. They also own 49 power plants, and a lot of these guys are on-site.

Power stations have fewer employees than one would expect. Both companies have very large trading and back office organizations, although I expect part of the rationale for the merger is to squeeze personnel cost savings out of these functions.

On second thought, I have a relative that works for RRI and from his stories it does seem as though staffing would depend on the type and size of the facility. Obviously there's a big difference between a nuclear plant and a small gas turbine facility meant to help satisfy peak loads only.
