Construction Alert: Demolition of Old Sid Richardson College

The preparation for the demolition of Old Sid will begin on Wednesday, June 14. Major demolition work will begin on Wednesday, June 28.

Dear colleagues,

We are writing to share information about the planning and preparation for the demolition of Old Sid Richardson College to make way for Colleges 12 and 13. To that end, the preparation of the Old Sid site will begin on Wednesday, June 14. This includes the placement of construction fences and cutting and capping existing utilities. Major demolition work is set to begin on Wednesday, June 28. The building will be demolished floor by floor, beginning at the top level and working down through to the first floor. While this work is taking place, our team is committed to keeping the site area safe to ensure a smooth operation. To that end, please review the safety precautions listed below:

Pedestrian Traffic: As preparation and demolition activities intensify around Old Sid and the South Colleges Lot, please be mindful of heavy pedestrian traffic in these areas. While pathways to New Sid Rich will be maintained on the south side, pedestrians are encouraged to explore alternative access points. Please refer to the pedestrian access map below to assist with that.

Vehicle Parking and Traffic: Although some parking spaces will be coned off for construction purposes, parking will remain available in the South Colleges Lot. There will be limited parking capacity during this time.

Project site access by construction vehicles will be through Campus Entrances 3 and 4. A flag person will be present to guide and ensure the safety of all individuals in the area.

This work is scheduled to complete by October 2023. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to Tina Hicks, senior project manager, at 713-348-4296 or tinah@rice.edu. Your engagement and support are instrumental in making this transition as seamless as possible.

Thank you for your commitment to our campus community,

Facilities, Engineering and Planning

"Many of the upgrades this year will be in premium spaces in the stadium, Joe Karlgaard, director of athletics, recreation and lifetime fitness at Rice, told the Houston Business Journal at the end of May. The university is gutting the south side club and reconfiguring the layout and bar area of the space. The stadium will also feature two new “party decks” — one on the northwest corner of the stadium and the other on the southeast — which will include premium bars and other amenities."

Exciting news about the two new college buildings that will be going up. Talked with a worker from Anslow Bryant who is the GC company building them both and also the servery. It will be two 12 story concrete buildings with the servery in the middle of them.

Demolition of the old Sid Richardson has started. JTB Demolition got the demo contract.

Anslow Bryant also built the new Sid Richardson building and the Ralph O'Connor Science building.

I wonder if this is going to affect his winning design for the new student center at Rice?

"The Financial Times reported that Adjaye allegedly engaged in sexual misconduct with employees in 2018 and 2019 while working on projects. Adjaye and his firm are accused of “different forms of exploitation — from alleged sexual assault and sexual harassment by him to a toxic work culture — that have gone unchecked for years,” the FT said.

At least two projects have been affected by the allegations. Multnomah County Public Library in Oregon has cut ties with the firm which also has been removed rom the UK's Holocaust memorial project."

Wow. I can't imagine that Rice will continue the relationship with him in light of these allegations.

That would certainly explain why the Memorial Center demolition that was supposed to start at the end of the spring semester hasn't happened yet - in fact, they don't even appear to have moved anything out of the building, or made any of the visible preparations you'd expect for an impending demolition. I was just on campus a couple of days ago and although I didn't go inside the Memorial Center, looking inside through the glass doors it appeared to be business as usual there.

They are taking the old Sid Richardson College down the same way the 2100 Memorial Senior Living was taken down. From the top down using a tracked jack hammer and a skid steer.
