wakester
Hopefully the format war will end pretty soon. I think most companies, from studios to retail, are ready to end it.Also, to much importance is given to the porn factor. Back in the VHS vs Beta days you had two choices. Go to an adult theater or get a tape and watch in your own privacy. Now the internet is the preferred way most people get their porn. Besides, porn + HD = too much information. memebag
VHS vs Beta mattered because the VCR was destined to sell. The difference between having a VCR and not having a VCR is pretty clear. The difference between SD DVD and either of these formats is hard for most consumers to distinguish, so there's very little motivation to upgrade at this point. A format war is just one reason to sit out this round and wait for the next technology. The content producers and distributors desperately need a product to take up the slack now that DVD sales have stabilized because they built their business models on a rapidly expanding market. I don't think either of these formats are going to do that.
foxmulder
Sony Blu-Ray is kicking butt, by over 5 X the amount of players sold on the market thanx to the Playstation 3, the HD DVD players are doing okay, with a big help from the Xbox 360 add-on, but it is not enough to save it.The irony, as stated in the artcile, HD DVD's are selling better, per Amazon.com, right now. But once Blu Ray titles start coming in with more variety, I am sure that will change. Blu-Ray will win this time , it will not be a BetaMax, MD, or UMD type blunder. Video here If Microsoft was selling Xbox's with the HD DVD i'd have 3 HD DVD players now. Microsoft needs to get on the ball. Toshiba put out 2 new laptops in our store with HD DVD drives on them. NewMND
Does Blu-Ray work better with LCD TV than plasma's, or does it matter? It just seems Blu-Rays are always being displayed on LCD TVs at the stores when I notice them.

It just seems Blu-Rays are always being displayed on LCD TVs at the stores when I notice them.it most likely depends on the resolution each displays. some televisions are 720p, which is fine for over the air broadcasting but the high definition players output higher resolution. I don't have a need right now for either, and really didn't understand the differences all that well, but I would have liked to have had a choice ... I think...?There was no upside to two competing hi def DVD formats. Toshiba's format had lower capacity, but it was cheaper to produce and used a less draconian DRM scheme. The death of HD DVD is good news for those waiting to pick a format, but bad news for those who hate Sony with a deep and abiding passion.

memebag
I guess I don't hate Sony, but you're right ... as a consumer how is this better? If you're a consumer who bought an HD DVD player it's worse because there will be no more discs for your player. If you're a consumer who bought Blu-Ray it's better because all studios will channel their production to discs for your player. If you're a consumer who has been waiting to see which format wins and doesn't hate Sony with a deep and abiding passion this is better because a format just won. You can buy a Blu-Ray player be confident that content will be produced until the next new and improved format comes along.
Disastro
Yay! The most expensive, DRM-crippled format won! Let's all celebrate. How about good ol' "not broken" standard def so I don't have to buy a new player? Here's the formats I have succumbed to over the years (keep in mind, I've replaced my collections of films EACH time): VHS Laserdisc (the big 12") DVD Um, nah-gawna go to Blu-Ray. Let's put it like this: If I am forced to, I will be keeping my standard def DVDs and just buying new titles on Blu-Ray. That's as far as I go! The line must be drawn HEE-YAH!!! Right HEE-YAH and NO FAH-THA!!!! I am SO tired of being soaked by the entertainment/electronics industry!

Pumapayam
Kinda of off/on topic, but now since the whole format wars are over, I have found myself still renting movies. I still don't own a single Blu Ray, and the last new DVD I got was as a gift. The irony, when I was younger and making less income, I'd find myself impulsively buying the latest big release at Walmart/Circuit City/Best Buy while they were at there first week discount out of habit.I'd watch them once, maybe twice, and then it sits on the shelf. Now with online rental streaming to my computer or PS3 and $1 rental machines across the street from my house, I don't see a need for buying physical media.Has anyone else made the transition to renting only or are you still buying movies and tv shows on DVD and Blu Ray?
