Can we change the thread name to reflect the downsizing of this building to 45 stories? I wonder if that was just a "for-show" groundbreaking or have they actually started construction? Looks kinda like the former.

X Houston: Residential High-Rise At 5501 La Branch St.

Did you mistake that canvas for a central chilling station? Editor probably would have. ;-) I doubt there have been five people who have ever mistaken the Beck Building for a central chilling station. This whole conversation is ridiculous.- 480 replies

Correct, it is not uncommon, especially when there is a change of composition, but this change pretty clearly has nothing to do with the very minor change in our composition. They did not change the north Texas metroplex name as you stated. Dallas-Plano-Irving is the name of a metropolitan division, a subset of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. Neither has changed in some time. (The western side of the metroplex is the Fort Worth-Arlington-Grapevine metropolitan division.) FWIW, their combined area is named Dallas-Fort Worth.

Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land Metropolitan Area 2022 population estimate was 7,340,118. With the addition of San Jacinto County, the new Metro 2022 population is 7,368,977. Houston-The Woodlands Combined Statistical Area 2022 population estimate was 7,533,096. With the new addition of San Jacinto County, the new 2022 population is 7,561,955. And they have renamed the areas. Metro area is now officially designated as the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands Metropolitan Area. And the Combined area is now the Houston-Pasadena Combined Statistical Area. I don't know what led to the name-changes.

US Census Bureau recently released revised delineations of metropolitan areas and combined statistical areas. Houston metro area now includes San Jacinto County (2020 population: 27,402). Component counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Waller. No changes were made to the Houston combined statistical area (other than the addition of San Jacinto County).

ROFL. So I guess we’re so far gone, the query of “what are we lacking” is irrelevant.

And yet you can't name a single thing it lacks or a single thing a new stadium would provide that NRG does not, or a single way in which NRG could/should be improved. And your "comp" tells us nothing whatsoever about NRG Stadium or your claim that NRG Stadium is light years behind the new stadiums.

People with minimal observational skills can probably figure it out by reading the words carved into the stone (and yes, the building is stone, not concrete).- 480 replies

Thank you, but that tells us nothing. NRG's capacity is equal to SoFi's. Atmosphere, amenities, location, etc. tells us nothing. What does NRG Stadium need to provide a better "atmosphere" (other than a winning team, which is a different topic). What amenities do these other stadiums have that NRG stadium lacks? Guess what, AT&T Stadium rarely opens its roof. The frequency or infrequency of roof openings tells us nothing about what the stadium lacks. You keep telling us NRG is light years behind and there are many things that put it behind, but so far you've not been able to show us even one specific thing.

To bring this back to the topic of the $2 Billion pot of money to be used in the downtown area/convention district; As I understand it, they will not be able to use this money to fund anything at NRG Park. Way to go county "leadership". Dallas is using this same state-authorized funding plan to fund both a new convention center (the vast majority of the funds) and to provide some additional funding for Fair Park. A relatively small fraction of this money could have funded a renovation/reimagining of the Astrodome.

It doesn't seem to have worked out that way. NRG stadium has hosted more NCAA championships and Super Bowls than AT&T Stadium. FWIW, AT&T Stadium cannot add "tens of thousands" more seats. For the one Super Bowl they have hosted, they attempted to add 15,000 extra seats. But a bunch of those were deemed unsafe. The rest of AT&T's expanded capacity capability is standing room. As to SoFi, attendance at Super Bowl LVI was 70,048; less than their stated capacity of 70,148. Are you certain that they can expand to 100,000 for super large events? If so, I wonder why they wouldn't have done so for the Super Bowl of large events, so to speak.

72 In. Water Line From Crawford To Mt. Vernon St.
Houston19514 replied to hindesky's topic in Traffic and Transportation
Yes, I’ve seen it in person. Infrastructure construction and rebuilding tends to be complicated and messy. People complain when the city does not maintain or build adequate infrastructure and then complain even more when they do so. -
I’ll ask again. In what ways are the new stadiums light years better than NRG? What do they have that NRG lacks?

OMG! Such tender souls. Some street work in front of your house is hell? Get serious. I guess It's good to use something other than the Houston standard -- It's a nightmare. -

Oh, the drama. I guess Houston must be among the very most serious cities. Has any city gotten rid of more surface parking lots in the last 25 years or so than Houston? More than 50 blocks of surface parking have been gotten rid of. We'll be fine if we have an occasional quarter block of surface parking added. -

^ Interesting. Thank you. From the looks of it, I'm thinking this might be intended to be temporary. They didn't even make an attempt to maximize the number of spaces... make a little money for the rest of the Astros season and then . . . -

What cities are prohibiting surface parking lots from being built? -
I guess they haven’t had many takers that led to covered sidewalks.
