  1. Why are they only inviting "art aficionados and downtown hipsters"? What if I wanted to go? :-)
  2. This building looks like it could be Anadarko III in The Woodlands.
  3. Precisely why I posted this article, considering most everyone on this forum is an amateur city planner who subscribes to the arts district, walkable urban center, mixed use, diverse, rail, "insert other trend here", etc... definition of city success. Never mind all of that pesky economic and free choice nonsense.
  4. http://www.forbes.com/sites/carlschramm/2013/05/14/its-time-for-city-planners-to-adapt-a-new-model/ An interesting take on city planning.
  5. I was just going to add Sunnyside. I should've finished the article before I posted. :-)
  6. http://money.msn.com/now/the-25-most-dangerous-neighborhoods A list of the 25 most dangerous neighborhoods in America. Houston comes in at #15 with the east side neighborhood centered at the intersection of Dowling and McGowen streets.
  7. I've been in Houston for 18 months now and it's definitely not the city that I thought it was when I came here. It's interesting now that I know the area better how far off base other people's (non-Houstonians) perceptions are of Houston. I recently had a conversation with a friend from Austin who was telling me how great the food scene in Austin is and I was telling him how incredible the food is in Houston and he had no clue. I don't even think he believed me!
  8. This one shows distribution of racial and ethnic groups based on the 2010 census. Also fairly interesting. http://projects.nytimes.com/census/2010/explorer
  9. I just want to reiterate my point that we should have gone after Peyton Manning! Who's the number 1 seed? Who's going to win MVP?...Oh yeah and who blew their shot and fell to the 3rd seed due to OFFENSIVE INEPTITUDE? Schaub is a scrub!!!
  10. Trader Joe's had a recall of their peanut butter due to a salmonella outbreak. http://www.usatoday.com/news/story/2012/09/26/salmonella-outbreak-prompts-peanut-butter-recall/57846594/1
  11. This is an interesting thread to read through. I took this test twice in 2 different classes in school and when we talked abouth the results in class I was the only INTJ. I know INTJs make up less than 1% of the population but are generally over represented in surveys due to our propensity to take surveys. I guess we can add participating in urban development forums to the list of activities we particularly enjoy. Who'da thunk it?
  12. When this line is operational will the trains run the entire length of this line and the main street line, or will I have to transfer to another train at the UH Downtown stop? If they run the full length will the time between trains increase? Just wondering...
  13. How's a fella to go, if a fella don't know?
  14. So...when is the next Haify Happy Hour?
  15. There is a restaurant in Tyler called Jalapeno Tree and they have queso called pappa bear dip. It's richy creamy yellow cheese with seasoned beef mixed in and, the best part, it's served in a bread bowl! It's so good my wife and I drive to Tyler occasionally just to get it! Anyone know of a local place with something similar? Jalapeno Tree is a chain in north and east TX but none down here. :-(
  16. I'll definitely check out meetup.com, not so sure about the friend finder for adults though...
  17. HAHAHA I knew the zombie comment was going too far and would throw this thread completely off track. Red, where is this shelter jic tshtf!!!
  18. This may seem a little strange but here goes... I moved to Houston in December because my fiance` is a nurse in the med center. I travel for work and rarely have an opportunity to interact with people locally so I don't know anyone yet. So basically I'm looking for some friends and I really have no idea how to go about it. It's a strange thing to try to make friends as an adult without meeting people through work or school. I've really grown to love Houston and HAIF has been an invaluable resource for me to get to know my adopted home better. So I figured this would be as good a place as any to start. A little about me: Male, 29, engaged I spent 4 years living in Japan when I served in the Navy, got out and went to UTTyler to finish my bachelors degree. I like sports, particularly footballl, hockey, and MMA Enjoy going out for drinks.(love me some bourbon) Love cracking jokes (the more off-color, the better) Live music and stand-up comedy are 2 of my favorite things Music; Robert Earl Keen, Kevin Fowler, Old Crow Medicine Show, Turnpike Troubadours Comics; Ron White, Louis CK, Joe Rogan, Greg Hahn Politically; right leaning libertarian (sorta) Survivalism, love planning for the zombie apocalypse food, guns, hunting, fishing, normal guy stuff I guess This has grown entirely too long, but if any one is interested in grabbing a beer sometime or anything else just message me or respond to this post. I'm in west houston but willing to drive. Thanks for reading Robert
  19. Any updates? I'd love to see the finished product.
  20. Where does it say they're setting up to "cash in on the affordable care act"? I seem to recall several new medical service centers being built all over the country prior to the passage of the ACA.
  21. When I was at the VA Hospital back in February I was reading their monthly newsletter and it said they had plans to build structured parking. If you've never been then you may not know how miserable the parking there is, but I assure you it is horrible! I wish I could remember more details of what it said but sadly I don't. Hopefully that is what is beginning now.
  22. "Second, the proposal allows for retail use in multi-family neighborhoods like those on parts of already dense areas like Capitol Hill. The low-rise zones in the proposal aren’t required to have retail, but could if there was demand." Well which is it? Is the retail allowed or required? That's a huge difference! Also, the author of the article refers to a local activist as "A Saul Alinsky-style organizer". Seriously...as a compliment? And this "How did earnest, liberal, Birkenstock-wearing activists pushing for parks, play equipment, sidewalks, and kiosks turn into affluent, highly motivated saboteurs of new development, change, and density?" Could that sentence be any more charged? There's something very off-putting about this article. It comes off as very manipulative and reprobate. We don't need people like Roger Valdez making any decisions about Houstons future. BTW I'm pro Ashby highrise, pro densification, and I think the neighborhood residents (at least the ones involved) are being ridiculous. But I also think extremists like Roger Valdez and Jim Diers whose common beliefs seem to be "single-family home owners are evil scum who must be destroyed" (my interpretation) are far worse! If the market demands increased densification it will happen, if not, it won't.
  23. I like this move. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d828ba016/article/case-keenum-stays-in-houston-agrees-to-deal-with-texans?module=HP11_headline_stack
