  1. I'm thinking of going and checking out World of Beer tonight around 8 or 9 pm. If anyone is interested. I know it's last minute but I just decided to do it. :-)
  2. I spent several years living overseas and when I would tell people I am from Chicago they often would have never heard of it. In general people had heard of New York (for obvious reasons), California (Hollywood), and Texas (Cowboys, country music, etc...) One of the major reasons I chose to move here was due to the culture. Texas has a wonderful and unique culture that is distinctly Texan. Rugged individualism, patriotism, pride of place, heritage, friendliness, and of course all of the cultural stereotypes. Maybe it's something many native Texans can't see because they're so used to it but many states don't have this. Honestly, what is Illinois' culture other than thinking of Chicago, or Iowa or Indiana or many other states. I read comments on this site all of the time and hear them in passing where people complain of Texas culture, show disdain for it, or want it to change or go away. I don't understand this sentiment. Culture is what makes so many things in life unique and special. We live in an era of multiculturalism and it's often stated on this site how great it is that so many people from other countries live in Houston and bring a small part of their culture with them. Why doesn't that apply to the local culture? Why do so many say that "other" culture is good but Texas culture is bad? Trebelino, what good is cosmopolitanism or internationalism without the individual parts that make up those concepts (read: cultures). I'm not trying to attack you or argue with you, I just truly don't understand the double standard and I'm not just referring to you. This might be a good idea for a new thread maybe I'll repost this somewhere else. I started a new thread for this comment in the Off Topic section.
  3. Great news!!! Should be a great addition to the skyline from the west and south!
  4. With all of the excitement brewing on HAIF about all of the new residential coming to Downtown, I'm curious. Is anyone on here, who doesn't currently live in Downtown, seriously planning on moving to downtown as these new units come online? This crowd certainly seems to be the target market.
  5. Greenville, SC has an interesting Hampton Inn. Although it's not an iconic highrise so I'll probably get berated for saying that. http://lodging.uptake.com/blog/hampton-inn-and-suites-downtown-greenville-greenville-south-carolina.html Couldn't resist :-)
  6. I can't believe I found a thread for this topic. I've been hearing this same noise the last few nights and was wondering what kind of critter it is. Like the OP I also live in Westchase, so I guess we have a chirping frog infestation over here! :-)
  7. Certainly seems like a prime location. Plus with all of the growth in the area I would think something will be built here eventually. I hope it's more of a destination type development like the rendering as opposed to more big box stores, chain restaurants, and parking. Not that I'm against any of those things, I just like variety. :-)
  8. It's been on Google Maps satellite view for at least a year.
  9. I've been wondering what that ring was for. Hope this comes to fruition.
  10. Why are they only inviting "art aficionados and downtown hipsters"? What if I wanted to go? :-)
  11. This building looks like it could be Anadarko III in The Woodlands.
  12. I just want to reiterate my point that we should have gone after Peyton Manning! Who's the number 1 seed? Who's going to win MVP?...Oh yeah and who blew their shot and fell to the 3rd seed due to OFFENSIVE INEPTITUDE? Schaub is a scrub!!!
  13. Where does it say they're setting up to "cash in on the affordable care act"? I seem to recall several new medical service centers being built all over the country prior to the passage of the ACA.
  14. When I was at the VA Hospital back in February I was reading their monthly newsletter and it said they had plans to build structured parking. If you've never been then you may not know how miserable the parking there is, but I assure you it is horrible! I wish I could remember more details of what it said but sadly I don't. Hopefully that is what is beginning now.
  15. "Second, the proposal allows for retail use in multi-family neighborhoods like those on parts of already dense areas like Capitol Hill. The low-rise zones in the proposal aren’t required to have retail, but could if there was demand." Well which is it? Is the retail allowed or required? That's a huge difference! Also, the author of the article refers to a local activist as "A Saul Alinsky-style organizer". Seriously...as a compliment? And this "How did earnest, liberal, Birkenstock-wearing activists pushing for parks, play equipment, sidewalks, and kiosks turn into affluent, highly motivated saboteurs of new development, change, and density?" Could that sentence be any more charged? There's something very off-putting about this article. It comes off as very manipulative and reprobate. We don't need people like Roger Valdez making any decisions about Houstons future. BTW I'm pro Ashby highrise, pro densification, and I think the neighborhood residents (at least the ones involved) are being ridiculous. But I also think extremists like Roger Valdez and Jim Diers whose common beliefs seem to be "single-family home owners are evil scum who must be destroyed" (my interpretation) are far worse! If the market demands increased densification it will happen, if not, it won't.
  16. I like this move. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d828ba016/article/case-keenum-stays-in-houston-agrees-to-deal-with-texans?module=HP11_headline_stack
  17. Damien Woody just listed the Texans as the best option for Manning on ESPN.
  18. The Texans without Johnson are still a better overall team than Manning ever had in Indy. Top 5 defense and running game. The Colts D in the Manning era has never finished in the top 10 and the running game has always been in the bottom half of the league even when they had Faulk or James. Manning will make whatever recievers he has look good and he prefers tight ends as his primary targets anyways. Trade Schaub and Johnson for picks, use the cap space for Manning, use the picks on recivers/tight ends, and if it's affordable, bring in Reggie Wayne or Pierre Garcon to have a comfort level with Manning. SUPER BOWL BOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Manning is going to be medically cleared to play. He wasn't let go because of health reasons but rather because the Colts have chosen to go in a different direction and rebuild around Andrew Luck. Yes he's going to be expensive but considering he's arguably the greatest quarterback ever and quite possibly will have 3-5 great years left in him, I'd say he'll be worth every penny. It's also possible that he would be willing to take a lower salary to join a serious contender rather than a giant salary to play for an also ran. The Texans do have cap problems but I think they should do whatever it takes to get Manning if they can possibly do it. That includes dealiung Schaub and maybe even Andre Johnson, yes he's a great player but he's getting past his prime and he still has value on the trade market. The NFL is a business and personnel decisions are not based on feelings but rather what is best for the franchise. If the Colts can cut Manning we can let go of Schaub to get him.
  20. Peyton Manning was cut by the Indianapolis Colts today and all of the analysis and speculation about where he'll play next year has begun. The Texans have been repeatedly mentioned as a possible suitor for Manning. I think this would be a fantastic move by Houston. Schaub is a good quarterback but he is coming off a serious injury and is in his 30's just like Manning so that makes the risk about equal when choosing to go with Schaub or Manning. The upside with Manning is much higher and he could be the final piece of the puzzle that puts the Texans over the top. The Texans run game and defense will be a big draw for Manning who is going to be looking for a contender and not a team that is in the process of rebuilding. The Texans should trade Schaub for draft picks and to free up cap space then sign Manning and make some serious super bowl runs over the next few years. This would also give them the opportunity to develop T.J. Yates or another young quarterback(Case Keenum?) to take over after Manning retires. Thoughts?
