I feel like it doesn't adopt so well to wider screens, which seems...not very forward-looking. Probably works well on phones I suppose.

I mean, that's almost what they did. They left the bare minimum of floor slabs and columns and otherwise completely rebuilt this thing.

Chevron Tower For Downtown At 1600 Louisiana St.
Texasota replied to tangledwoods's topic in Going Up!
I think they can ameliorate that by making it very clear that its temporary. Literally put up a billboard in the middle of the block showing the future tower. I feel like similar temporary use has been done before, though I can't think of where and don't have time to research it right now.- 1,170 replies

Chevron Tower For Downtown At 1600 Louisiana St.
Texasota replied to tangledwoods's topic in Going Up!
You know, if this is going to sit for a while, I wonder if the downtown district couldnt convince chevron to use it as a short term park. As soon as the new residential buildings start coming on line, it would be cheap and easy to throw up some temporary volleyball nets, fencing for a dog park etc. I suppose its usefulness would depend somewhat on what (if anything) actually gets purchased for use as a permanent south downtown park- 1,170 replies

Based on what exactly? "The rest of the people" will either park in existing garages or on the street, or take transit or a bike in. What's the breakdown of commute type in Seattle? I assume its different from Houston, though I have no idea by how much.

"but obviously they would need more"... I sincerely doubt that any other parking is planned for this project. Our perspective is just skewed by what we see here.

Well, no, not if there's anything left of the old buildings. Besides, Hines could put up a pair of high rises where the garages are now and do something more interesting with the existing non-garage building.

It's for the art cone thing. Like what was on Montrose, the Inversion house, and that outdoor stage in 5th ward.

Using it to commute is largely dependent on increasing the number of stations. Right now stations are located primarily at destinations; they need to also be easily accessible in comparatively residential areas, even just within midtown, Montrose, etc, but the big obvious one is the entirety of the Heights. Even 100 stations will be too low to reach most people who could otherwise take advantage of Bcycle for commuting purposes. Compare 100 stations to the number of stations in the DC area, New York, or even Minneapolis. WITH THAT BEING SAID, getting the total up to around 100, if carefully targeted, will make a huge difference. I'd like to see them keep the range pretty low to maximize station density, but we'll see.

Walking downstairs to get groceries is SO HARD YOU GUYS!!! I have seen Whole Foods provide lockers where you can order your groceries ahead of time and then just pick them all up from the locker though.

Houston IS unique in that even the historic buildings being renovated into apartments are getting garages. The Rice Hotel got a garage, the Texaco building is getting a garage, and the Great Southwest building also has a garage proposed. Other cities with more historic (pre- WWII) building stock are more likely to end up with renovated buildings with little or no dedicated parking, but that just isn't happening here.

Again, all of the new tenants have parking spaces in dedicated garages. Who would these new, separate garages be for?
