  1. Now that you mention TG & Y, has it been talked about much om Haif?

what i remember most about tg&y - as a kid - was the large wireframe bin stacked full of those thick balloons with the rubber bands on the end to bounce against your fist. those and it seems like they had a lot of hippety-hoppies too (the balls with the handle on top that you sit on)

  2. I have many pictures - will post soon.

The bricks were being stripped off the front a few days ago - might be gone by now.

Also, on many demolition permits, an older owner is listed for some reason (like second or third behind the current).

so what style of house is it? MCM? georgian?

hmmm. do you think the listing of an older owner is intentional? Like in case someone gets upset they won't seek out retribution of the new owner?

  3. Anybody know anything about the demolition permit that was issued yesterday for 1314 South Blvd.?

    Buyer info:

    07105151 DEMO RES/SEWER DISC

    DENNIS WILLIAMS

    1748 OAK TREE BLVD 77080

    713 465 7231

    Owner/Occupant info:

    MERRETT RONALD G

    1314 SOUTH BLVD 77006

    040-053-039-000-0024 BROADACRES HISTORICAL DISTRICT

    12A SD 2313 D

This showed up in Swamplot's Daily Demolition report, and I thought some people might want to know . . . or have info to share, since it's in the new Broadacres Historical District.

interesting...doesn't look like it is a Staub house. If the hcad year is correct (50's), maybe some of the MCM guys know if it is significant. Btw...hcad already shows a new owner after merrett (as shown on the permit above)

  4. I've been researching a few things and I can't seem to find out the history of this building (even on here!) and was wondering if anyone had any clue about it?

    What was it before?

Also was wondering if there was any truth of a rumor (I say more like grumbling) about a new HPD building might be in the works.

it used to be the Houston Natural Gas building.

dunno anything about a new bldg.

  5. Was owned by the heirs. Several months ago the Houston Parks Board bought around thirty acres right there. They had to get the owners of the horse stalls at the front of the property and a Mexican fellow that had goats on the back of the property to move out. At some point there will be a park built at that location that will eventually tie into hike/bike paths built along Sims Bayou like the project they are currently undertaking along Brays Bayou.

Wow. Did not hear about that. Sounds like good news. Now if they would actually get the hike/bike paths in there.

Did they buy the old VFW hall too?

  6. Thanks everyone!

Wouldn't it have seemed like somewhat of a man-made marvel in it's day, that this could have been built?

There must have been tons and tons of earth either moved or brought in to build this thing in what 1957-ish? The fact that Gulfgate was high above like a hilltop is what made it stand out.

and don't forget that Plum Creek was also burried under Gulfgate too.

  7. I honestly did not know there was ever a golf course there. The driving range however was there. There is to this day a narrow street that comes off of Belfort right across from Hartman. I think it has since been made into a one way street because it was so narrow. The driving range we went to was bordered on the west by that street, so I am sure that a driving range was there at one point. There may have been another one where the Krogers no stands but I don't remember it.

Hmmm...maybe they turned some of the old course into a driving range after the Country Club closed?

BTW..somewhat related..i think that tract of land between Bellfort and Sims Bayou is still owned by the Allen Ranch or rather an Allen family member or its heirs.

  8. As I mentioned in my earlier post I can tell you where a lot of driving ranges were, and the location you mentioned was where one was. I don't think it was a golf course but I am certain there was a driving range as it was where my Father took me a lot of Saturday and Sunday afternoons to pound balls. It was in the late 60's when we went there.

The driving range was in a field where the current Kroger is located.

The golf course (Sims Bayou Country Club) was across from Hartman JH, as Glenbrook mentioned. I think it preexisted Bellfort.

  9. The "shopping center" shown in the brouchere is at about the 4900-5000 block of Fulton, maybe at the NE corner of Gale and Fulton. The drugstore shown was Spell's Pharmacy (at least it was in the 50's).

I believe the building may still be there. It was just south of the Al-Ray Theater, which has been mentioned in this forum before.

It looks like you might be right - the bldg might still be there (probably doesn't look the same though). From my old directory, Spell's was at 4938 fulton which would put it on the SE corner of Fulton and Gale (i know you said NE but do you think it could have been se ?). From Google, a building of similar footprint is still there. HCAD shows it as built 1950...but we know how accurate that can be...not very.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...002704&z=19

Btw the NE corner was wiped clean for an Uber Mansion (see it on the google link too)

  10. I lived in Lindale up until 1958 as a kid. Does anyone know where the golf course was? I remember hearing about it but never knew where it was. That's a great picture of Linder Lake.

Linder Lake snack bar made the world's best hamburgers. I'm pretty sure my opinion about the burgers had nothing to do with being an eight year old boy who had been swimming for about five hours before I got my burger.

I have an old map somewhere that shows it.

if i remember correctly it was on the westside of the neighborhood.

i think the later sections of lindale park were built over it.

So where was/is the lindale park shopping center shown in the brochure? is it still extant?

  11. I don't do foreclosures, but if I did, I would have to sign up for the Crappy Photos 101 class. Foreclosure listing agents (or their $6/hour guy that runs errands for them) get the WORST pics I have ever seen.

I think with some good pics some of the foreclosures could sell much faster as buyers may actually want to LOOK at the houses after seeing them online.

I like how the HUD foreclosures usually have the "mandatory" photo of the taped down toilet lid. :P

  12. It's gone.

He obviously expedited the demolition after the chron article was published...probably fearing a ground-swell of support.

He took a page from the Ashland tea room house...or from the old adage...its easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission...or something like that. y'all know what i mean.

  13. that's the pupuseria - i think it is pink now...

    and fluorescent green, too.

the pupusas there are okay but i like the pupuseria on telephone rd better. you know the one, sevfiv...near your old digs just down from the santa rosa theater site.

  14. ^lol

regarding the creepy doll, i wonder if it was one of the kids' - in this picture, the "Nadine" has a large doll (but the other kids have them, too...)

    http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/images/muir32b.jpg

that is an interesting photo. a lot of the kids have dolls. i wonder if it is an old practice that slowly faded out?

the one in the park place photo looks like the girl holding it. I wonder why she has a life size doll of herself and the other kids don't

  15. Red Lobster I could live without. Upscale Japanese, I'm afraid we will be going downtown or midtown for that (its not that far anyway), as for Italian, old George's on Park Place isn't bad. Certainly not upscale, but decent food. PF Chang's, ehhh, just another chain, who needs it with 888 there. As for upscale steak places, how is Bonnie's or whatever it is called across the freeway? I have never been there so I don't know. It looks nice on the outside.

i concur on red lobster...ewwww. Although we used to frequent the one on Broadway (near Bellfort) when I was a kid (currently Don Carlos).

Too bad Mandola's Blue Oyster Bar closed a few years back. Still have Captain Benny's boat to enjoy beer and oysters on the deck though.

bonnie's has never impressed me. not awful but not noteworthy either.

Pf changs is overrated IMO. 888 is awesome. Also like the Vietnamese food at Cuu Long on Broadway sometimes too.

George's is decent italian at a great price from a great guy.

    How about Kelley's as a steakhouse?! :P

  16. I lived on Elmen Street from 1993 until 1997 although about 4 blocks up from Westheimer. I never thought the parking was bad due to the Empire Cafe. However, it was getting bad by the time I moved due to the influx of 3 to 4 condos where one bungalow used to stand. I imagine it's much worse now.

That said, that neighborhood is pretty decent with the # of people walking/biking to Lower Westheimer and West Gray. I loved my Elmen St address at the time because I could walk/bike to River Oaks Theater, old movie theater where Marshalls is now, Empire Cafe, Brasil, Alabama Ice House, Kinneally's, Daquiri Factory (Slider's now?), Paulie's, etc...

and Empire has added parking this year by taking the lot adjacent to their existing parking lot on elmen

  17. I hope we dont have our stadiums mixed up? Barnett is the one over off of Telephone Road & 610 not far from Gulfgate Mall (behind Frank's Grill) . It seemed very old to me back then. I know Jackson had some games way over at the stadium off of Mangum Road at 610 & 290. This was around 74 though I used to go to see friends in the football team play there. Was it Butler Stadium?

Again I am almost sure that Barnett was made way before 1976. I could be wrong though. Last I saw there were just hundreds of school buses parked on the land.

Golfcrest Country Club closed on December 31, 1970.

Then they would have to clear the site and build a stadium.

so i think East End Susan is probably right or very close to being right.
