  1. ^^^ Right. There have been some attempts to renovate some of those older structures near 75th and General Garcia Blvd, including some others along different stretches of Harrisburg and/or the East End (El Mercado, etc). Like with most things, the developer needs to be reliable and competent. There have been some swings and misses.
  2. There you go. Have a little fun at your own expense. The problem is that people have spent the last 100 years or so letting people on either coast dictate to them what to think, what to like, etc. I don't expect anyone to change that anytime soon. BTW, not that I'm into civic slogans and whatnot but I do like, "Houston: it works." Ho hum...
  3. Houston Center 6 seems to fit very much with the design of Houston Center 5. It also looks to have some design elements similar to Calpine Center.
  4. What's funny is that in my experience, the most obnoxious of Cowboys fans are not even in Texas but outside the state.
  5. Yeah, they're about 8 years behind the City of Houston, Sugarland, etc.
  6. I haven't eaten at Irma's in over a year. Their grilled chicken salad is pretty good, though.
  7. So your opinion is that Lakes of Olympia is dollar for dollar the best bet in Mo. City? I pretty much like the relative designs of Riverstone but would agree that I didn't see much that could reasonably command consistent $500K and up prices, especially given the lot sizes. Sienna Plantation IS indeed convoluted in how it takes a while to actually get to the development from HWY 6. No real opinion on the others.
  8. I was going to say it but Coog beat me to it. For downtown, and for an establishment that's looking to be more of a destination for more than the weekday lunch time crowd, $24 for a steak dinner of any kind isn't bad at all.
  9. Okay, I'm drawing a mental blank. I'm going to have to go investigate during lunch.
  10. At the very least, that eyesore of a defunct gas station is no longer standing.
  11. Agreed. At first, I thought this thread was referring to an update to the 2005 update. It's a very compelling study and, although I disagree with some of the parameters and the methodology, it's a very intriguing look at how a city functions (or how it may be dysfunctional).
  12. A lot of people won't like to look at it that way but it's still a very interesting way of looking at it.
  13. Getting from East Austin to West Austin during rush hour can be a massive pain. It's not much better going north-south, especially on I-35. Not enough capacity and even fewer options. Not good for a growing metropolitan area.
  14. Yes, from what I hear from people I know in Dallas, Valley View has many of the same charateristics as Sharpstown Mall.
  15. I've got no major problems with Jones Hall other than, as H-Town Man mentioned, the acoustics could be a tad better. Is it the best peforming arts structure in the country? Of course not. Is it an eyesore? Nope. In fact, it's attractive in many ways, especially at MCM structures go.
  16. Because it's not located on one of the two major coasts, not an old traditional city that reminds people of Europe or wherever, and as a result gets snubbed by the "really cool" people, who know what's in and what's not. The really cool kids almost always know how to make the others feel left out and insecure, so the others (and Houston has its kin in this regard) spend time and money trying to get the really cool kids to, just for once, say its cool, too. It's the dog chasing its tail.
  17. Exactly. The renovation was never meant to yield a one-tenant result.
  18. On the one hand, it's great that they'll be filling in another empty lot, especially in the eastern half of DT. On the other hand, I was hoping that they might have considered renovating Ben Milam Square.
  19. Yeah, this is just in time, as I'm looking to expand my dining experiences.
  20. The Chronicle often leaves a lot to be desired. However, I'm now starting to think that it's a national problem. Hardly anyone likes their hometown newspaper. Ugh!
