  1. So if I understand this they are going to build a big ugly garage on the corner of 610 & 10. That should look real nice. I hope someone dissuades them from doing that. Surely they can come up with a better plan. Money is not a problem for them.
  2. I drove by the site at lunchtime and I like the fact that this building with its curved corners and angles in its footprint will break up the monotony of all of the square and rectangular shapes. I know it's unpopular to some but I think the setbacks from the curb will also allow for some interesting views that were lost in the boxy Foleys building. I can't call it Macys since they were in it a relatively short time and it was built for Foleys. It's not going to show up on the west skyline but it should interact really well with scale of the buildings surrounding it including the future Alesandra. This is going to be fun to watch as it gets up there.
  3. Checked it out Lockmat Its called the Tangley Building and it is full of small offices for real estate groups and different types of small businesses. I didn't go in but looked nice inside.
  4. The large rectangular one is for the freight elevator and the other ones were formed to save on the amount of concrete in the mat. That area will not be load bearing and doesn't need to be as thick. The raised areas are where the columns will go and that's why they are thicker. That is essentially what I was told.
  5. I think he is asking about the rectangular greyish bldg. Which is between the pub and Benjis. There is an enclosed small parking lot on the front side. I will find out what it is. I work just a few streets over. I think it should be converted into the small grocery store they need in the village. It would be in the perfect spot with all of the residential within a few blocks. How convenient would that be to walk next door for your groceries.
  6. Could they be for sump pumps. That was what someone said the others were and the look similar. Just seems to be too many of them though. maybe its a bank of elevators. Im just guessing.
  7. I have a couple of great images from the pour but not tech savvy enough to make them small enough to download on the site. I'd be happy to send them to someone who knows how to make them small enough to be downloaded. I also have some some nice ones from Hanover for the Southampton and I can't get them to download. The files are too large and my computer brain is too small to make it work. Helpppp!!!!
  8. Thanks for the structures class. I always learn something on this site. I'm not an architect, but I know many that attend seminars and lectures for credit. Does this count towards those necessary credits? Also I mentioned on the Marriot site, but they have a big pour this weekend also. Should be a busy Saturday downtown.
  9. The concrete is going to be flowing all over downtown this weekend. The Marriot has a big pour this weekend also. Not sure which day but I'm sure someone here can find that out. Apparently they are doing there's in sections but still at least 150 trucks.
  10. I wish the oxblue construction cam featured 24 hour live flow. If I remember correctly it seems that you only get a shot every once in a while every day, but live feed would be interesting to see. They do have a feature that allows you to watch the time lapse images but I don't think there will be enough of them to see the trucks going in and out. I wish I could be there to watch but will be at work. I'm really not sure how their cameras work but I do know you don't see movement in the images. Anyone know for sure.
  11. Rechlin, great shots. When I blow the image up and magnify it,there appears to be a man in an orange shirt walking below the men working on the rebar bundles. Am I seeing things, or is it, that thick of a slab?
  12. If they continue to add residents to the east side of downtown they will eventually get to a point where they can justify building a supermarket. Its desperately needed on that side of town.
  13. One thing for sure. Of all of the TIRZ's Upper Kirby district along with Midtown is the most dominant and progressive organizations in the city. They definitely have a concise plan and have consistently worked to improve the area. They are growing the brand to extend from Westheimer to Bissonnet. They also seem to be pro rail. I don't think we'll see a rail down Kirby but they are in favor of the University line. I do think that Kirby will be one of the most important streets in the inner city along with Montrose, which in my opinion is way overdue for a total make over. I'm sure within time, might be 25 years, but that Kirby will be a canyon of highrise towers from 59 to Westheimer. It will happen.
  14. Well that's too bad. I thought they would be a natural. Sounds like you guys have a better handle on their culture than I do. I just tHought with the new divisions they might want to consolidate all into one downtown superTALL.
  15. Great image Urbannizer. I was told last week from my source that they wanted both the offices and the hotel to be built at the same time so this makes sense.
  16. After reading in todays Chronicle about the new super sized Kinder Morgan, with its recent acquisitions, making it the third largest company behind Exxon Mobil and someone else and just in front of Chevron, perhaps they will decide to build a new supertall. Of course I would want them to build it on the BOSW vacant lot in the center of town.
  17. Its funny, I was just commenting last week about the number of parking lots on the North side of Minute Maid. Its nice to see things starting to happen there. When we lived a block northeast of that in the Wagon Works bldg., it was pretty quiet and dark all the time, but once they started building the stadium it started to change. Then all of those parking lots just sat there, except for the Cotswold improvements which did bring better lighting and landscaping to the area, but no other development. Maybe this will get the ball rolling on this less developed section of downtown.
  18. it would if we didn't have the tunnels. They make the city look like a ghost town. Although in a downpour or 100 degree days I guess its good, but it has spoiled everyone just like the indoor stadiums have, to the point that no one ever wants the roof open for football or baseball games, and everyone drives their car into a covered parking garage takes the elevator to their floor and at lunch goes down to the food court in the tunnel system never leaving the friendly confines of the air conditioned tunnels while the sidewalks are relatively empty. Thats why there is very little ground floor retail. We have a subterranian downtown.
  19. Back in 1986 when Johnny Carrabba and Damian Mandola bought their first little gutted x rated store and turned it into one of the most popular restaurants in Houston at the height of the last bust people thought they were crazy. Then they bought the property around the remodeled, and then rebuilt restaurant, and now have a dynasty at the epicenter of the Upper Kirby district. I believe Carrabba's, was one of the early tipping points for that whole area. I worked for them from 86 until 94 working on my masters and they were very savvy to accrue the land they did and have reaped the benefits of those early moves. They have got to love what has followed. Just an aside, does anyone remember one of the greatest grocery store/ import markets, right across the street from Carrabbas. Jamail's the original Central Market/ European import and deli, that catered to the River Oaks crowd. It was one of a kind and way ahead of its time. Now that was a place to see just about anyone who was important in Houston.
  20. I'm still pulling for a super tall on the old Southwest tower competition site where an 82 story was to be erected. I think that location would be the perfect location centrally located and between the two super talls we currently have downtown.
  21. Just don't mess with the building north of the 2727 Kirby. I like that building. I think its a trust or some kind of financial institution. It has nice bones. In the article it says that the small buildings in this rendering will be retail facing Kirby with a pedestrian courtyard in between it and the tower and full of restaurants, and that the Becks Prime will stay. I'm sure there will be plenty of retail since the success of Hanover's Rice Village apartment project. Has anyone heard any more about the Thor development project, on the western blocks of Kirby between Richmond and West Alabama going forward?
  22. It would have been interesting to have been able to do a little digging around the site before they started construction to see what artifacts could have been found. This was the location of the Cellar and Warrens and everything else from the beginning of Houston. No telling what they are digging up and taking away to the dump.
  23. I was curious about this also so I called just now and spoke with one of the people in the office who said this is a go, and it will be moving forward in days. I don't know if that means this week or down the road, but he sounded very positive about it going forward soon. He said they have their building permit so hopefully Triton, MidMain will be coming out of the ground soon!
