  1. Has Oxberry Group ever done anything that would be considered aesthetically pleasing, and not built on the cheap. This is extremely disappointing especially considering what was supposed to be happening on these blocks. Some groups shouldn't be allowed to leave their marks on public property. One step forward and two steps back.
  2. i imagine that you will have to enter from the main building to gain access. Besides if it wasn't fenced you'd have people camping with their tents all over the grounds.
  3. A good friend was on that team and I watched over the years the frustration for him to see the project decompose in real time.
  4. Our group Lindale played at Smithers park this year and had a great time. If you haven't been to the orange show and Smithers park in a while, your in for a treat. The pavilion that we played in is a large tiled bowl. It's really beautiful. The whole park is a tribute to broken tile mosaics and they are amazing! I highly recommend a visit for those who have never been there. Its just off the Gulf Freeway on the feeder before the Telephone rd. exit on Munger. They will have a concert series in the fall.
  5. I'm pretty sure they plan on bringing everything in the park up to the these new standards. Just think what they've already completed and how great it looks.
  6. I must say that I was disappointed at the lack of progress, but it's really looking good.
  7. There is a fairly substantial steel structure going up on this site. It takes up the whole block. I just haven't seen this much steel on a project in a while. It's being built by Paradigm builders. It might be related to the church on the block just north of it.
  8. Needless to say the surface parking is a disappointment. It reminds me of a motor lodge. The view should be nice as long as someone doesn't develop the lot to its west adjacent to the rr tracks.
  9. Just what we need. Another Mexican restaurant. Disappointing. This could have been so much more.
  10. We lived in the neighborhood for 15 years, In the 1400 block of Branard, three houses from Mulberry, and right across the street from the park behind the new drawing center. Early on when just the Rothko was there from 71 - 73. Then again from 2003 2016. I know the neighborhood. I sat on my front porch many days and thought how nice it could be without the concern of traffic on that little street. I can say from experience that the removal of Mulberry between Sul Ross and Branard would do nothing to destroy the fabric of the Menil, but would make it a safer, more pleasurable space. There would be more room for events in the open area to the east of the Menil, and it would create a more pedestrian friendly approach to both the park and the museums. Why would a street make the Menil more appropriate. There would still be a flow around the spaces. It would just make for a more unified space between the Rothko and the Menil. If you've ever been to Storm King in New York, you get a feeling for art and open spaces. They might be able to add another sculpture in the open space.
  11. It's quite remarkable, what the addition of these new buildings, landscaping and artwork have had in unifying and uplifting the overall campus.
  12. I completely agree with you on all off your points. I just don't see the typical resident in this region that is willing to give it up. I'm a huge supporter of the rails and I am very hopeful that they will begin construction on these planned new lines and continue to rework the midtown streets into the new style urban streets like Bagby and Caroline. The growth of Houston was built on the car model and it will take a while to change that culture. I wish I could snap my finger and change it yesterday. It just takes perseverance and drive to get things done, and a whole lot of education. You're preaching to a fairly educated, small minority on this site, of the overall Houston driving population, and it will take a lot of patience, but it will happen someday. Let's just hope that it's not too late.
  13. I too am a big believer in Climate Change. I worry about the future. I use to say that I fear for my grandchildren, but now I've amended it to say I fear for my children. I'm torn about the new fed proposal about the wind farms, I like the idea of that resource to bring power to 2 million + homes, but I also worry about the migrating birds which would be heavily affected. Sea life would probably cluster around the platforms just like they do at the offshore rigs. We have 5 million cars registered in the Houston Metro area. Unless the city, state, or the feds make it illegal to drive a car in the near future, people will still want to drive the car they've bought. You can't expect everyone to hop on the rail or bus tomorrow, and just give up that car and continue paying that 500.00 monthly payment. It doesn't matter if you drive a combustion engine auto or an electric car, you still have to park it somewhere. You can't get everyone on the Red line. Remember the Astros world series parade fiasco. Besides it will be a long time before people will be willing to walk to a rail station or bus stop. Most are just too lazy, stubborn or stupid. So, for a while I think there will be a need for parking garages and hopefully they can bring these down just as easy as they put them up. It's not poured in place for the most part.
  14. Just curious Houston19514 Do you work for Central Houston? You always seem to have some inside info. If you do has Bob Eury left the stadium? He was always so positive and led both the Downtown District and Central Houston with such dignity and success. The city will miss him. He was instrumental in so many initiatives for downtown.
  15. There were a ton of people at the convention center in anime and other comic costumes when we passed there on our way to the Post. I just forgot about that, but it sure was nice to see a crowd down town. Just think what its going to be like when Skanska finishes their downtown projects and adds another wrinkle to Discovery, and then we can see what Jim Crane develops around Minute Maid with all that property he's bundled. It's just amazing to me after spending 7 years living in the PPG building on the corner of Crawford and Franklin when it was a relative ghost town before the stadium was finished. The Jackson Barbecue location was a mexican ballroom featuring young girls who you paid to dance with. I never went but you could sure hear the juke box late at night, and I remember it had christmas lights on its marquee. I was running Cabo's at the time and would ride my bike to work.
  16. We went to the Post Market on Saturday at around six and had a hard time finding parking. There was a solid wall of people looking from the rooftop at downtown. Went inside and to my surprise and delight found the market brimming with people. The space next door to the market had a film festival going on that night. I think there was also a concert on the other side that night. So many in fact that we couldn't find a spot where six could sit comfortably and we went to the Ares to Blind Goat and the Pizza place. They weren't quite as busy but they had a pretty good crowd. There was a concert in Market Square and it was packed. The Astros game was going on and parking was incredibly expensive and full. We got lucky and found a street parking spot in front of the new Texas Tower. There were more people walking around downtown that I have seen in years. It was pretty incredible. When we finished we came out to even more people who were starting to stream back to the market square area after the astros game, which we won!! It was really exciting to see so many downtown. Id say the crowds are coming back downtown. Also saw some very strange street people acting even stranger which I had to explain to my six year old grandson.
  17. So it looks like they intend to take out the two houses west of the Rothko for the meditation garden and moving their offices and archives to Sul Ross, That makes a lot of sense. So essentially it's one long park with the Menil at one end and the Rothko at the other. Perhaps they would consider taking Mulberry out from Sul Ross to Branard eliminating the street between the two buildings, and create a continuous open space. Besides less traffic would be a good thing in that neighborhood.
  18. You won't believe the number of prints that Escher completed in his life. I cant remember going to an exhibition and seeing so many works by one artist. And etching, litho and woodcut prints are very time consuming and take great patience. I worked in the printmaking studios at u of h many years ago during my MFA years. It's quite remarkable the amount of work that he created.
  19. You might want to eat at the Kinder building cafe. Its really nice and extremely convenient since its in the museum.
  20. Thanks for the details Highrise Tower. Between you and Hindesky and City Living we don't miss anything. Really appreciate you guys dedication and hard work!
  21. This one seems to be taking longer than the others. I know Ardmore took a year. I wish they'd wrap this one up. It's been over a year and they still have work to do. I'm ready for MacGregor to open back up to Calhoun.
