  1. i agree wholeheartedly. An 80 storey would be nice- with a spire! :D

    m. B)

That would be nice, tall enough that you could see it behind the foreground of towers in the "skyline district".

Also, I remember us discussing wether or not MainPlace would be visible from the "skyline district". But, i dont remember if we agreed on anything. Do does it look like it will?

  2. Houston remains in hunt as possible World Cup venue

NEW YORK — Chicago and the San Francisco area are out of the running as venues if the United States lands the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Eighteen cities, with a total of 21 stadiums, were selected Tuesday. About 12 stadiums would be chosen if the U.S. bid is successful. The bid will be submitted in May, and FIFA will make the decision on hosts in December.

The 18 cities are: Atlanta; Baltimore; Dallas-Arlington, Texas; Denver; East Rutherford, N.J.; Foxboro, Mass.; Glendale, Ariz.; Houston; Indianapolis; Kansas City, Mo.; Landover, Md.; Los Angeles-Pasadena, Calif.; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; Philadelphia; San Diego; Seattle; and Tampa, Fla.

I'm sure Baltimore, Nashville, Tampa, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Glendale will be eliminated. Mixed feelings about Foxboro, Denver, Seattle, and Landover.

I think it will come down to Atlanta, Arlington, Houston, East Rutherford, Los Angeles-Pasadena, Philly, and San Diego. But, the ones who have a chance at getting it too, are Foxboro, Denver, Seattle, or Landover. Just mo.

  3. Well i wasn't aware of this, and should be some good exposure for Houston. If we do get it, it would just add to our experience for hosting large sporting events.

    Article from the Chron,

Raising the ante for Olympic trials

Houston seeks to land both races in January 2012

Houston has joined some fancy company as one of three finalists bidding to host the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.

But, in typical Houston fashion, organizers of the Chevron Houston Marathon one-upped their lofty rivals — the New York and Boston marathons.

Houston wants the men's and women's races, managing director Steven Karpas said.

New York seeks only the men, and Boston is after the women. They were the respective sites of the 2008 men's and women's trials.

    Thoughts, anybody?

The race would be on a Saturday in January 2012, the day before the regular Houston Marathon events, on a multiple-lap criterium course along Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive to avoid too much traffic disruption.

Karpas is comfortable with the hotel situation, given that the events fall on a weekend and the new Embassy Suites at Discovery Green will be open by then.

“It's going to be expensive for us, paying for two races,” he said, “but this is for Houston. We've taken our knocks trying to land major sports events. I think we've got a real good chance based on the feedback I've had.”

    link: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/run/6807646.html

It goes on to mention Houston's failed efforts to land the 2012 olympics, and how this would compensate at least for a little bit.

I think it's a great idea, plus, it's in January, so next year our mildly cool winters should return. For a first, no one will complain about the weather!

  4. So you saw it as well and say it was Rice University, correct?

Saw it again, and it looks like Rice, but it could've been another university. There are tons of univ. and many are just as nice as Rice, so im not sure, there wasn't something enough that made it distinguishable.

  5. Houston expected to be in U.S. World Cup bidHouston is expected to be included in the United States' official bid to host a FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

The USA Bid Committee will conclude its eight-month host city selection process by unveiling the list of 18 cities to be included in the bid on Tuesday.

The bid is due to FIFA, soccer's international governing body, by May 14.

Houston Bid Committee members like Houston's chances of making the cut.

Basically, the bid comittee likes our chances?

  6. I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but here it goes.

I would think another newspaper from a community that would be impacted by the rail would have more info, but heres the Citizen's article.

An open house inviting public input into the proposed Houston-Galveston rail service or its alternatives is scheduled for January 14 in Pasadena.

This open house, one of a series of three, is part of the alternatives analysis phase of consideration of mobility improvements along the Galveston-Houston corridor. It is part of a study sponsored by the City of Galveston, Galveston County and the Federal Transit Administration in pursuit of federal funding for rail service or alternative commuter transportation options.

As in the first round of open houses, the four alternatives being considered are:

Commuter rail service between downtown Houston and Galveston, running along the existing rail right of way along Highway 3.

Bus rapid transit using high-capacity buses in exclusive lanes, running along Interstate 45 between downtown Houston and Galveston.

Express bus service between downtown Houston and Galveston on a route partially using Interstate 45 and partially along Highway 3.

Doing nothing to address traffic issues along the corridor.

During the first round of open houses, rail was the preferred alternative.

    http://www.hcnonline.com/articles/2010/01/05/pasadena_citizen/news/010310_rail_open_house.txt

The three open houses, which will have information about the proposals and opportunities for input, ate scheduled for:

6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the La Marque Community Meeting Room, 1109-B Bayou Road, La Marque.

6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, in Atrium II of the Bayou Building, University of Houston-Clear Lake, 2700 Bay Area Boulevard, Houston.

6 p.m. Thursday, Jan 14, at the Cleveland-Ripley House Neighborhood Center, 720 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena.

More information about the proposals can be seen at www.GalvestonRailStudy.com.

  7. This winter stinks so bad. What happened to our mild winters? I was over this winter before it started.

A change in scenery isnt so bad. I've enjoyed these colder days.(for lack of a better word) Not what we usually expect in a Houston winter. And, hey, it could be worse, we could be Dallas!!ohmy.gif

  8. Come 2012(or whenever the LRT is done) , i think the entire area East of Downtown Houston will be one of the most Public Transportation Friendly part of Houston.

    • Pasadena Park & Ride(METRO)
    • Baytown Park & Ride(METRO)
    • East End Line(METRO)
    • Southeast Line(METRO)
    • Local Service Buses(METRO)
    • Baytown Fixed Route(HCT)
    • Baytown/Highlands/Crosby Route(HCT)
    • Pasadena/SoHo/La Porte Route(HCT)
    • Seabrook/Clear Lake/NASA Route(HCT)*

*Although I dont really consider the last route in the same area...

  9. Hmmmm....it mostly passes the outskirts of Northern Pasadena. And thats the worst part..

It looks like the new route even goes to the "other" side of HWY 225! Now thats the worst-looking part of Pasadena, and then goes into South Houston. Ugly neighborhoods.

Though it goes on Spencer, which is ok, and then Fairmont. So itll show all the different faces of Pasadena.

And its cheap! I'll try it out. But i wonder how the bus stops look like?

Anyways for a more detailed route of the new Pasadena/SoHo/La Porte route:
