  1. Maybe more Safety Point shooting? I know they're still shooting in town.

When did they change the movie title from "Retractable" to "Safety Point"?

According to the movie site, the shooting locations look like the Civil District Court on Caroline, and Irma's restaurant on N. Shenevert. No mention about Heritage Plaza.

Also, if it were about Safety Point, then either thats not what gto250us is talking about, or he heard wrong. Julia Roberts and George Clooney aren't starring in this film.

  2. They just did a great shot of DT Houston by Chevy that I'm sure was a national ad because it was showed during the commercials by NBC during the Winter Olympics just now.

And there's a great photo from around the same location on Flickr, but I can't find it, so I had to settle for these 2 images that that basically show the angle of where the skyline was seen from.

The actual commercial was around evening time, and it must've been recent, because it showed OPP and Hess Tower u/c(well it still is, but you get the point) It was really a great shot of DT, and I recall the scene about some father and son playing baseball in some undeveloped, wild field, and then constructing a baseball diamond. It showed DT at least 4 times.

    Has anybody else seen it?

    Got the photos from here:

  3. To be clear, the new site is not in Bellaire. It is in the City of Houston and is only close to Bellaire. And if the Midway Cos. could pull off a private-sector coup along the lines of their master plan, it would end up saving both the City and the County tens of millions of dollars. In my mind, that's the biggest advantage of this site. The area right around there is also kind of ugly, so this development (if successful) could help bridge the vast socioeconomic divide between the Galleria area and Gulfton.

Soccer stadia clearly don't need to be in a centralized location to make sense, as evidenced by Dallas' team...on the other hand, the new site is closer to the true population centroid of Houston, which is near the I-10/610 interchange.

Having said all this, I don't think that the Midway Cos. has a serious proposal. It's merely a distraction from the only workable plan, which is to build the stadium with public-sector assistance.

Technically having it in Arlington is better, since its closer to the middle of the Metroplex, why have it on one end of the MSA, when you can have it between Dallas and Ft. Worth.

  4. I'm pretty sure theres not any people that play basketball living DT, but that doesn't stop anybody from playing in Root Memorial Square next to the Toyota Center.

    Nice article in the Chron.

And this blog was cool to look at

  5. What is the advantage of the East end? Is the folly really just politicians in a power war, or is the location critical for other reasons? The business end sounds really good. Just curious to get the insider opinion.

Im not the insider with the opinion, but for one thing what good is this stadium going to do in Bellaire, where its clearly not wanted? Is it going to revitalize the area there?

Here it is centralized, and will help fill in some good area, that currently is full of some really ugly buildings. It will help draw more people to Downtown. Where else if not here?

Will the westpark tract allow people to spend the day in the area, or will it be a park your car, watch the game, and leave? The stadium wont even be inside the loop!

It makes sense here, it is needed here. Having it in the other proposed location will just make it a pretty thing to look at from the freeway.

  6. Skanska likes building chances

Swedish firm buying key tract for office project

Mair expects construction on the Houston building to begin by the end of 2010, whether a tenant has been signed or not. It will take two years to finish the building, giving it a 2012 debut date.

He says Skanska selected the development site for its coveted Post Oak address and frontage on the West Loop. In addition, future building tenants will have views of downtown Houston to the east and the Water Wall to the west. Another attraction is the fact that the tract is located on the proposed light rail line.

  7. I just don't think a stadium would bring anything to the party when it comes to development...in EaDo OR Downtown...other than maybe ANOTHER B.U.S. bar. laugh.gif No way soccer fans are going to be going downtown to eat or spend any money before/after a game. People don't really even do that for MM or Toyota Center games either...they come...park...watch the game...leave...in masses. Look at the Toyota Center...it's still just the lonely China Garden sitting next to it...and even it is pretty much walled out by the massive parking garage.

Well, there are at least SOME people that do stay in downtown before or after a game. And, im positive that some Rockets fans hang out in Discovery Green.

And even if not a lot of people do stay in DT, at least its an option. No other area will offer what DT offers to spend the time before a game, or after.

  8. Dynamo, developer in talks on possible SW Houston stadium site

Dynamo President Oliver Luck is in talks with a developer about building a soccer stadium on private land about a mile south of the Galleria.

The Dynamo have not abandoned plans to build on a 12 acres of city-owned land downtown, Luck said.

But the Midway Companies approached Luck recently with a concept that would put the stadium in the midst of a 30-acre mixed-used development just west of Loop 610.
