  3. soooooooooooooooooo I do get a lot of chatter from the people at register and perhaps because I am old and slow I get quite a few "finding everything. . . . " from stockers on aisles. The Kroger on Gray , not so much chatter. My last observation of odd difference between the 2 stores: The orchids at disco were $9.99 the same size orchid on Gray, $16.00. I've seen that exact price different several times over the last several months.
  4. This from an email I received-- there are quite a few that show up for Saturday volunteering but they need more------ 156 trees have been tagged at the cemetery in hopes we can nurture them into being long term residents. These tree's positions need to be recorded on our survey. They need water. Some of the trees need a hug. There have been several trees and limbs that have fallen victim (literally) to the drought in the past month. These need to be moved into ready mode for our next dumpster day. So there is some chain saw work available! I promise the temperature will be less than 156 degrees, all morning. The fence location has been staked using Laurel and Hardy survey techniques, but you can now get a good idea of what it will look like and where it is going. Garden hoses will be welcome, drinking water and sunscreen are recommended, and if you want to help preserve the "Park" at College Park your help is desperately needed this Saturday, August 13 from 8am to noon at 3525 West Dallas.
  5. You'd be surprised. My part of Montrose is the EMCA/ Avondale lots of cars parked on streets for bars and restauants. Car burlgarly is #1. People walk down the streets checking to see if doors are locked and looking in car windows. They will break windows for anything left inside. Computer bags--sure but also backgammon sets, fancy flashlights, a hanging suiter and one guy had a garage door opener stolen---but it was for his mother garage door in another city. I wonder how long that guy went up and down the streets clicking at various garages?
  6. HPD gives 2 opportunities for citizens to get stats on crime and discuss that info with HPD brass => City wide PIP (1600 state street-- 7pm 2nd tues-meets every other month) local PIP (district 1 & 2 meets 4th tues 7pm 1600 state street) Did Midtown's Executive director comment? Neartown's boundaries only cover a slice of Midtown. Also did the the Midtown Management district comment? Isn't there additional HPD patrols paid for by that organization? I would think that organization would have some insight to those crime stats.
  7. http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2011/05/31/136821133/cellphones-may-be-a-cancer-risk-after-all?sc=emaf Big WHO study indicates "not much" evidence to link cancer and cell phones 31 scientist study the "not much" and agree the evidence indicates a link. . . . . . . . I'm confused
  8. If anyone is interested HPD gives monthly crime stats at the PIP (local divisions-- central one and two covers most of Montrose and Heights meets 4th Wednesdays 7pm 1600 State Street) the stats are discussed and further information is made available such as where the actual crime occured as opposed to where the culprits were arrested and how that affects what division the crime is posted in etc Back to the branding question----I think a contest of sorts has been offered/started at STU---so perhaps a young persons view of how to brand Montrose will be available
  9. This was in some of the Civic organizations archives for a tour of Avondale Ave. It's an ad from the 70's. Does anyone remember it?
  10. I like the idea of a logo for the Montrose management district-- I think Upper Kirby district did well with their UK idea and the funny phone booths--- I'm not sure what the logo is for Galleria but it's easy to distinguish the modern chrome traffic signals and bus stops etc The logo possibilities for Montrose seem endless, but with the survey being so . . . . . atypical . . . . I wonder what type of suggestions they will receive.
  11. I got this in an email from the Museum District business Alliance--- The newly formed Montrose Management District needs your input on how it should be marketing our area. To provide your input, we request that you go to www.montroselogo.com and complete the survey on this website. FYI--- The East Montrose Management district ( HCID#6 roughly covering Dallas to Bagby to I59 to Montrose blvd) was combined with West Montrose Management (boundary goes Shepherd, Dallas, Montrose blvd to I59 with a small portion of Museum district Montrose Blvd, Bissonnet, Graustark) montrosedistrict.org/
  12. I was doing a bit of research on Avondale and found this platte where a street was originally named Milby but later became what is today Taft street. The platte document is huge and I took a picture with my camera- wish it were better--but i wonder why Milby got this honor-- I may post the other pictures in a different forum and ask that question.
  13. Don't know if anyone else posted this but i watched the A&E series HEAVY and the first episode I recognized an apartment building on corner of Avondale and Mason. I think the entire series was filmed in Houston
  14. 2400sq ft for a lounge?-- that's bigger than my house!---Could Starbucks be moving?-- how could another coffee bar compete? maybe Deidrich was listening?
  15. I noticed the renovation and particularly the webbing on the roof--is something going to be built up there? i might have thought a second story starbucks like the midtown randalls but there is an existing starbucks across the street
  16. The Morrow chapel at Trinity Episcolpa in Midtownl is a historic space (1917) but has been renovated including a stainglass window that shows the charming interior courtyard--
  17. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm perhaps there is more home brewing being done in Montrose than one would imagine. . . . . We home brew also------------
  18. one of my kids graduated from Rice in 2001-- not much positive to say about the tunnels and raised eyebrows at the thought that anyone from the "public" would want a tour. This is probably typical---there is some sort of list of things on campus undergrads must attempt or experience before graduating. . . . . . . not sure how much enthusiasm for the list the kids feel , since only "swimming in university Presidents pool and walking the tunnels" were the only ones that came to mind when I asked.
  19. I saw on a neighborhood yahoo group that Late nite pie might be closing? Could that be true?
  20. Weren't those in response to the huge burglary increase in EMCA area over the past 7 months?--also That part of grant street was plagued by vandalism for a while-the guy who worked at la mexicana was assaulted and robbed there- isn't that where the fire across the street occured a few years ago? for a while there (2008--or there abouts) was intense conversation/discussion at the HCID#6 about installing security cameras on lamposts in the East Montrose Management District----what height they would need to be, what angle etc
  21. I just read this--I live close to Numbers and haven't really noticed anything different. . . . . . but when I read the blog about the Papa's .family being interested in Numbers , something clicked- at the HEB meeting where the HEB guy said he would be open to building a 2 story store if he could find additional tenants-- there seemed to be a lot of talk among the people around, about the Papas family and how they might be a good prospect -- coincidence?
  22. I have heard of the kazillion cameras in Manhattan---this is how the police got to much info so fast on the Times square bomber but check this out http://www.mediaeater.com/cameras/overview.html that seems to be the otherside of the coin it makes you contemplate the question of public cameras very carefully
  23. Got an email today about 2 different houses on Garrot street having their doorbells rang at 5am with a guy in a hoodie holding a newspaper-- both houses asked the guy to put the newspaper down--he continued to ring doorbell and police were called--be aware-- this happened this week--
  24. Was this the Bowling Lanes whose owner was on Undercover Boss?
