  1. Can't believe the new ID is getting 42% support on this forum. While the old one could be better in terms of Texas icons - the capitol looks a lot like many others in the US, a big Texas star will be more identified with Texas - the new one erased any trace of Texas. Don't be surprised if you give it to a trooper in Wyoming and they ask you for the state where it was issued. There's no Texas flags, no Texas star, no cowboys; only a poorly scribbled 'Texas' on the corner. That skyline is only identifiable to a few Austonians and a lot of HAIFers as Austin skyline, the rest of us think it's New York.

  2. Midtowncoog was Midtowncoog. Lived in Midtown for a while, then got married and moved to the suburbs. Fall Creek, if I'm not mistaken. He left about a year or maybe a little more ago. Rumor is he got a job where he needed to be more discrete.

You need to read post #183 of this thread.

  3. I had the news on before going out, and they were blabbering about how Rockets' fans were going to the game even in the rain... eventually the story led to how many Downtown buildings are going dark after 10pm. And not just for Earth Day, this will be a continous thing (shutting off unused lights, etc.). Then they said "according to Houston Architecture dot Info, the Neils Esperson Building..." I think they quoted the first couple of sentences the Editor has on it's HAI page, then said it was built in 1940-something. I think they meant the Annex, but that's what they said.

Anywho, I couldn't see Downtown crossing Elgin over 59. It was kinda scary. But getting closer to Midtown you could see the red lights on the top of a few buildings.

    Old Houston Buildings Go Green

    Dennis Spellman

    April 24, 2009

The Esperson Building was completed in 1941. HoustonArchitecture.Info says, "It was once the crown jewel of the city's skyline." It's a great example of Italian Renaissance architecture, but it wasn't built to be "green."

Still, even this building has been easily be improved. Matt Daniel, Skanska Construction Management provided 39 News with a guided tour though a large office on the 5th floor of the Esperson Building.

Skanska Construction Management helps building owners and tenants locate areas where they can be more eco-friendly, and save money. In an old building like the Esperson he says, "We would be looking at items that they could do that are really fairly simplistic."

One corner office had window tint and shades on it's 3 large windows. The tint has made a big difference according to Daniel. "The fellow that sits in this office right here has seen a tremendous difference in the heat gain in the office. So he is much more comfortable in this space" now that it's cooler.

The 5th floor offices also have motion sensors that turn lights on and off. "No need to run the lights if nobody is in the building" Daniel said.

Using "Energy Star" office equipment, and turning it off at night is also something any office can do. Even in an old building you can recycle paper, and use compact fluorescent light bulbs too.

Windows have also been added to exterior offices to let sunshine pass from the outside to interior work spaces. It saves money and improves the working environment.

"It's significantly improved the working environment by adding the windows, putting the light into the space," said Allen Caudle who works on the 5th floor of the Esperson Building.

  4. I rely a lot on houstontranstar website for my commute but it's not been working since Saturday. I first thought it was due to the heavy rain but it's not working right now as well. Did I miss the news on it? Is there any other real time traffic map?

Btw this is the site: http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/

Edit: It's mostly working now and Hwy 6 to Kirkwood on katy freeway is blue, despite the HOV lane opening. :angry2: Is there another map out there anyway?

  5. Can't believe I spent-don't know how many-minutes reading these three pages.

Twitter is not the most popular 't' search on google, like 'o' for obama, 'f' for facebook or 'w' for walmart.

Twitter beaters on google search includes target, toys r us, ticketmaster, t mobile.

'Does google's most popular search changes by the time of the day?' will be my next research.

  6. Everyone here probably know and do this as needed but I will throw it out there anyway. Please call TXDOT on 713-802-5000 whenever you see harzardous debris on the road. I do this often but I nearly got in a wreck on NB 288 at W Orem tonight due to a heap of junk on the road. What calmed my nerves was that when I called, the operator nicely finished my statement and said a technician is on the way to clear the stuff.

  7. Some work is happening on the southbound feeder just south of 610. I guess this technically is not the 288 feeder but actually the eastbound 610 feeder as its rounds under 288 just north of Holmes Road and then doubles back to 610. An entrance ramp to 288 southbound at this location would be a welcomed alternative to people trying to go outbound.

Yes I also saw that. An entrance to 288 South at that location will reduce evening congestion at Fannin entrance ramp to 610 East. I guess people coming from Med Center/Reliant area and trying to go towards Pearland are clogging that ramp up.

  8. I wonder how it is possible for those malnourished-looking, resource-lacking pirates to take over a vessel; and what will happen if they take a US owned ship.

I doubt it that violence will increase. Pirates know that they hardly match any nation when it comes to force. Moreso every nation, except perhaps Somali government, is against piracy in that region.

  9. I think you are unintentionally confusing matters. All UH universities and campuses are run by the UH System. The UH System includes a number of separate universities.

    UH

    UH Downtown

    UH Clear Lake

    UH Victoria, I think

The Cinco Ranch and Sugar Land campuses are part of UH I believe, meaning campuses of the central university.

What do you make out of this at the UH system website?
