  1. I think we should build a stadium on the superblock in Midtown. Camden obviously isn't going to do anything with this location and the area definitely needs something to anchor it. You could build a parking garage on the site and still incorporate some retail facing main. The best part is that you have a rail stop right in front of it. It's still centrally located, but it will be cheaper than having to buy up land downtown.
  2. I'm not a big Dan Reeves fan. I was excited when he took over the Giants in the early nineties, but they ended up being a mediocre team at best. I also thought Dan had some health issues.
  3. After the whole Shamrock debacle, I think downtown is due for a big ground breaking.
  4. Considering that all three sites mentioned are right by the existing buildings and with the Museum District being what it is, I would be surprised if they went with a radical design. Pleasantly surprised, but surprised none the less.
  5. Was this parking garage designed by Phillip Johnson by any chance, perhaps along with his design for Penzoil Place and not built until serveral decades later?
  6. LargeTexas, you sure are coming out with a lot of scoop lately. A lot of exciting stuff, I hope it all happens.
  7. I noticed the sign for Wulfgang Puck's Express has been down for some time. Did it not work out?
  8. I'd like to see a Barnes and Noble or a Borders. Downtown needs a good bookstore.
  9. I couldn't imagine Tilman being able to compete with Six Flags over Texas or Sea World.
  10. There's a fence around this lot and this morning a backhoe was tearing up the asphalt. Is this the start of some new development, possibly for Christ Church?
  11. That became a nightclub called Glow. No karaoke as far as I know.
  12. Does anyone have any idea what those covered things are on the northeast corner of Root Memorial Square? They look like some sort of sculptures, almost like chess pieces. Guess they're waiting to unveil them. One thing to add to your list Hizzy, looks like they've got a big crane over the site of the new downtown cathedral. Not much to see yet, but it will be interesting to see this site evolve over the remainder of the year. I'm curious to see if they put the old church under the wrecking ball. I'm very surprised to hear that work has begun on Bayou Place. Frankly, I thought that was never going to happen.
  13. Does anyone know what's going to happen to the Chevron building downtown, their main location downtown before they bought 1500? Do they intend to hold on to that building or sell it off?
  14. From a recent Chron article: Meanwhile, LandCo is proceeding with a residential project on the southern end of downtown. Last year, the company bought the long-vacant Days Inn hotel at 801 St. Joseph Parkway. Work will begin next year on converting the the 30-story building into 251 apartments, Raider said. LandCo, which was created in the late 1990s, has developed land for single-family homes and recently began building high-rise residential projects.
  15. Any word on the tenants? Earlier in this thread it was mentioned that there would be a House of Blues, T-shirt store, pet shop, UNOS pizza, teather ball court, and a laser tag area. Not exactly enough to fill in a three-block retail development. One also has to wonder how a project like this can bring in new tenants when Bayou Place in the center of the Theater District can't get past phase I.
  16. Roger Clemmens is 42 years old and has a 1.47 ERA after pitching 122 innings - that's insane! Especially considering the fact that his home stadium is Minute Made Park. I was glad to see that Oswalt made it as well.
  17. Several years ago that building was home to a small grocery store. The space was then vacated to make room for a possible restaurant or retail store. Needless to say, it has sat empty until now. Perhaps they are finally getting around to restoring the building.
  18. That Rice Motel is kind of hideous though, or at least for the proposed location.
  19. Can we go ahead and officially add Ballpark Place and the Shamrock to this list?
  20. I think there's a distinction to be made between mentally impaired or alcoholic homeless persons that frequent downtown and midtown and transients that either ended up in the county jail or rode into town on Greyhound bus. IMHO, the latter are the more troublesome. Most of the stories I hear from these people start out with "I'm not from here, I'm just trying to get a bus ticket..." My guess is that a week later they end up somewhere else. They are more likely to be aggressive panhandlers and to have had previous trouble with the law. The homeless people that frequent certain neighborhoods, while considered a nuisance by most, are more likely to respond to acts of kindness, like working for a few bucks. In a strange way, they are very much a part of the communities they inhabit and approaching them more like neighbors than troublemakers might go a long way.
  21. I'm dissapointed that Saba didn't make it. I thought it was a pretty good restaurant.
  22. I noticed that the sign advertising these three blocks is still up. I would put this in the wait-and-see column. From our experience with the Shamrock we know that developers can throw out dates and assurances as easy as anyone else can. It doesn't mean they're worth anything.
  23. Houston-based AmReit has bought Uptown Park, a Galleria-area retail center developed by Giorgio Borlenghi's Interfin, for $68.8 million. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/3208551
  24. So the fact that Houston had just hosted a Super Bowl was thought to be the overriding factor in why we weren't picked? It's interesting that Miami is hosting the 2007 Super Bowl, which will bring its total to 8, and yet they were eliminated after Houston. I suppose it doesn't matter in what order they were eliminated, only who won, but it's interesting to read into these things. The NBA All-star game will be nice and certainly the final four will be a fun time, but it seems like the list of big events Houston has garnered due to our unprecedented stadium-building binge is beginning to grow small. A nice alternative would be for a few championships to come down the line, but I'm not prepared to hold my breath.
  25. This project is coming along nicely. The court has already been laid out and the goals are up. There's still quite a bit of landscaping to do, but overall it looks like it will be a nice addition to that part of downtown. A good number of homeless people still seem to be hanging around sitting across the street as if waiting for the fences to come down. I guess it's tough to give up a good thing...
