  1. The random "what the ????" moderns were one of the major drawing factors of me to the neighborhood. Eclecticism is what made The Heights what it is today. From Houses, to Restaurants, to art galleries and all other sorts of things. Why are you wasting your time here though... isn't there an inadequate bridge to be found near wayside?
  2. it's the actual formula used in pouring the urethane that is dramitically different. There is no comparison to old wheels, they are completely inferior. Wheels were made of clay at one point. Of course longboards aren't new, but comparing old ones to new (like foam core wrapped in carbon fiber) is comparing apples to hand grenades. I was skating around yesterday and decided to go to happy fatz... forgetting they were closed on tuesday I was crushed! Also, not sure if many of you knew Art from Stanton's City Bites, he recently passed away and the heights area restaurant scene has truly lost a great person. I encourage everyone to go there and get a big burger in the near future, they are now open on sundays!
  3. off topic** The technology behind skateboards has actually made a huge difference. Longboards take advantage of this the most (they use bigger wheels) because the biggest advantage nowadays is the advancements in urethane. New skateboard wheels are made from urethane that is much softer than wheels of old... but at the same time they do not wear out quickly. My go to board for long treks has very soft 75mm wheels... skateboards of the old days normally had 45-55mm wheels that were hard as rocks. The big soft wheels allow you to run over sticks, cracks, pinecones, and etc. while also maintaining a longer wheel roll. sorta on topic** I suspect over the next few years we will see more people using longboards to get to local businesses. This is part of why I think it would benefit any new restaurant to ensure they have good outdoor seating available, if your already a little hot/sweaty from biking/skating/walking to the restaurant you probably won't mind (or would prefer) sitting outside (provided there is shade and fans). BB's, Onion/Cedar/Dry Creek, Shepard Park, Cottonwood, Jus' Mac are just a few examples of the types of places that would fit that criteria. on topic** I'm curious of opening timelines for the brewery on Calvacade, Torcy's, Height General Store, TexMex place going in at white oak and studewood, Ruggles.
  4. I skateboard everywhere in this city. As long as they have a patio or outdoor seating its all good. Moon Tower is a nice easy destination while on a board (or bike). Heck I skated to juice box one time (awesome fruit w/ shaved ice and condensed milk place) over in chinatown (bellair and beltway 8). There is no doubt that this city is already getting more bikeable... and the more trails they build the better and more used it will get (though cars will always be most peoples choice). I really enjoy using my board to go to the bar though. Skating after a drink or 7 is a way better option than driving.
  5. I will ride my bike to nice places... as long as they have nice outdoor seating.
  6. My vespa needs little to no room to turn... neither do those loud evil motorcycles... they also don't take up much parking.... so an Ice House would be ideal! Any updates on Torchy's or Coltivare?
  7. So you don't want the area dry, but you want to make sure bars don't move in... and that isn't trying to tell people to do with their property how? The number of loud motorcycles pales in comparison to the number of loud tow trucks, big trucks with exhaust, import "sporty" cars with coffee can sized exhaust tips, and people blasting spanish polka that drive by my house... I think your disdain for motorcycles might be trickling over from your disdain for bicyclist... You must have a completely flat driveway to be able to push such a huge truck. (I could barely push a shopping cart out of my driveway.)
  8. A lot of those places opened in spite of the dry zone, that alone should tell you how much restaurants/bars want to move in to the area...
  9. So its okay to tell others what to do with their property when it is in line with your agenda? I would love a nice IceHouse between shepard and durham somewhere between 11th and 18th. The motorcycle complaint should be moot since it is already between two 4 lane oneway streets. Not every motorcycle rider has loud pipes, and some of them that do have loud pipes try not to rack the exhaust around homes late at night... your "dip-wad" neighbor reminds me of this jack-wagon schmuck down the street from me with a big F-250 4x4 diesel with a stack pipe running out of the bed... he comes home at 3 am and revs his truck up while doing a 7 point turn to back into his driveway... For the record... I ride a beast/monster of a bike which is why I take offense... a Vespa ET2 (50cc) with completely stock everything. (about as wimply as it gets)
  10. Except the already increasing number of restaurants in the neighborhood. Witchcraft is not within shepard and durham, but basically on the corner of 11th and shep. Not too hard to imagine something similar inbetween them being successful. Lifting the alchohol ban (which is rediculous in the first place) would definitely open opportunity for people to open some nice(and successful) bars/restaurants between shepard and durham. Nobody expects some miracle... but one or two more options sure would be nice. I also think your disdain for the "cruddy booze barns" just shows what kind of person you are. You afriad of "Ice house" patrons?
  11. Big Mamou had the 3rd best Gumbo on a 1/2 mile stretch of Studewood... as much as I wanted to love the place (the owners are very nice people) it just never did it for me. I appreciated the beignets the most... and if they would have been available all the time I would have went a lot more. Great location, great building, great attitude, the food just wasn't good enough.
  12. Congrats on convincing the historical committee to allow you renovate and save your home instead of their recommendation of demolition. It absolutely sickens me that this happened in the first place, but its nice to see right beat wrong.
  13. That is just because you don't understand projects/construction/business/etc.
  14. There really aren't that many units in the building... doesn't take much of a market really.
  15. I've seen numerous workers coming and going from there daily. ( I think I saw some Pool Designer people there the other day ). I heard they were trying to have a model ready for public view by the end of December 12' (when I spoke with someone back in July/August), if they have one ready in March that isn't that much of a delay. Pretty much standard construction project, keep grasping for straws though...
  16. I swear McCains had to try to fail... it was so blatantly obvious that it was missing quality/variety/vibe that I can't fathom how management didn't fix it (or at least make an effort). The workers were also cold/rude the few times I went there. Revival has some of the best coffee in Houston... and that isn't even their main business. I think Heights General Store would do well to carry a large amount of "old time" styled candies. I went to a place (very popular) in Rural North Carolina that had an awesome selection of classic candies, you filled a basket with what you wanted and paid by weight/tiers.
  17. Just for fun... I told you so!!! Disgusting display of power, exactly what everyone was worried about would happen. Stop the HAHC signs are needed.
  18. Yes you did. You specifically stated that you would remember those that opposed you when it was their time to try to renovate their house. Point proven.
  19. while your at it, why not move the entire thread away, since it doesn't belong in the "heights" section since the walmart is not actually in the heights. and on topic, i'm worried about walmart healthcare options to invade small businesses in the Heights...
  20. I see this as HAHC self destruction... "oh you don't like us and have legitimate reasons to be angry... here is even MORE ammo!!!"
  21. I think they actually didn't spend any money... since I don't know otherwise, I'm wearing comfortable shoes.
  22. Mayhaps you should say "up to 6 million" then instead of making it seem they spend the entire amount...
  23. South of 11th street Representin'. They should add to the historic district signs south of 11th (we still stab people).
  24. nah, those days are over up there... now they just complain/whine really hard about event organizers up there.
