  1. Sorry dude. But Pappasittos is the LAST place I would take anyone. It lacks the ethnic feel completely. Bascially, it's as though Disney decided to create a "Mexican" restuarant, and this is what it would look and feel like. And the food is pretty freaking far from authentic. Its taco bell with a touch of Seigfried and Roy. Heck, if you like this place, then you probably also like "Cafe Adobe" on Westhiermer: I couldnt believe how un-authentic Cafe Adobe was, given all the rave reviews that place gets. I didnt see one Latino in the place, except for me of course. Anyways, yea, those places make you feel like youre in the Montrose and in a sophisticated setting, but the food was marginal at best. Here are the places I like. No one else has to like them. But I do and so here they are: 1. Doneraki's at Gulf Gate: The food is marginally good, but the atmosphere is great. It feels like Mexico. And, its right in the middle of the Latino community on the southeast side. 2. Aguas Calientes: There are several in town, but I know the one on Edgebrook has some of the best food in town. For example, you can order enchiladas either Tex-Mex style or "Mexico" style. If its the food that is important, this is good stuff. But it doesnt have the atmosphere of Montrose. But then, most of the east end doesnt either. 2. Ninfas on Navigation. If you dont mind a slightly rought part of town. The food is authentic Tex-Mex. 3. Taqueria Del Sol: On Broadway and 45. Again, its very authentic and where real Latinos go, and it doesnt feel like the Rice Village. There is always a cop standing by around the parking lot. Eitherway. The "Caldo de Rez" is the best in town.
  2. It's all about not going crazy with it. Sure, Houston does some of that too. But Dallas seems to be obsessed with it.
  3. OK. I have lived in Houston almost 18 years, and I can kick myself for not trying out more restaurants than I have. I mean, I find some great places, and tend to stick to them. I do experiment with the Mexican and Tex-Mex scene, and know the restaurant scene in Kemah and Clear Lake very well. But given that my company coming over to visit me this Thanksgiving is my relatives from Mexico City, I really dont think they want to try out more Mexican food in Houston. So I need help. I know they like Chinese/Asian food, and Italian. So I would like some advice on some known good quality restaurants that are not expensive, given I will probably be paying for about 13 people altogether, two times at least. The other thing, I want to keep things in cool and interesting areas like the Rice Village and the Montrose. Since they are staying in Uptown, they will probably allready experience some restaurants on thier own in Uptown while they do thier own thanksgiving shopping. So I would like to exclude Uptown, and instead look at Montrose and The Rice Village. I found several Italian places in the Village, but would like some input on the quality of the food there. So there it is, Chinese/Asian food, and Italian, in either the Rice Village or the montrose. Can anyone give some opinions based on actual experiences? Thanks.
  4. Dont forget: Fort Worth is essentially Dallas.
  5. He left because there were too many hispanics, or as he calls them "Mexicans", moving in close to him. The sounds of Spanish and the smell of fajitas was more than he could bare, regrettably. And, he left because he noticed apartments that were being offered in the low-rent $2000-per-month range. That's why he left. "....and the smell of fajitas....rising up through the air..." - Hotel California, the Mexican version. Take care -2112
  6. Speaking of thinking they are "the Manhattan of the Southwest", check THIS out. (I rest my case) DALLAS'S 80-FOOT ULE TREE TO RIVAL ROCKEFELLER'S 09:21 PM CST on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 By KATIE MENZER / The Dallas Morning News Dallas can't top the grandeur and tradition of Rockefeller Center's tree-lighting celebration, but if bigger is better, let the bragging begin. 7. Any taco stand on Harrisburg. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
  8. Wouldnt it be funny if Montrose was taken by federal agents for suspicious taking of downtown buildings?
  9. errrrr. Dont give up the secret! Ive used that route for the very same reason.
  10. That just moves the problem. But I guess since Houston only exists inside the loop, then its ok.
  11. Oh, and Midtownguy, my rant was not directed at you.
  12. Exactly. Totally agree. If there is good balance (and not saturation of very-low rent apartments), then that is a good solution where everyone can co-exists. But again, there are people out there who start freaking out the moment A SINGLE apartment complex comes withing a half mile of thier homes. It's all about variety, balance, and tolerance. Take care.
  13. Just having a little good old fashion rivalry fun here! No need to get panties all up in wad. Laiders.
  14. My gut feeling is they wouldnt do something crazy like build a permanent structure underneath an elevated that might have to be fixed or expanded, or, that might leak toxic chemicals in the event a rig exploded up above on the freeway. I think the article reads correctly, except for the part where the author made and assumption that it was "underneath" the elevated. Too bad. It would have been kinda cool to see something underneath it though.
  15. Artista gets great reviews it seems. I havent been there so I dont know. But thats a good bet. If youre not in the market for fancy pancy, but rather a regular place, one of my favourites downtown is Market Square Bar and Grill. I have heard both good and bad about Mia Bella (italian), its right on main street where all the action is. Of course, there is all the chain stuff, but in downtown, I can only think of the Hard Rock. I wasnt all that impressed with the Aquariams sea food. Its a great lookking place, but I thought I got way better seafood for the price at Papadeux in Kemah. Of course, thats not downtown. Good luck.
  16. "...space is a 62,500-square-foot vacant lot bounded by Milam, St. Joseph Parkway, Louisiana and Pierce..." Wait a minute. The streets that bound this place are not under the elevated...its between Pierce and St. Josephs Pkwy. Did I read this thing wrong?
