  1. The good word is that that Las Alamedas might be relocating to La Centerra (or whatever it's called) out in Katy. Hmm...
  2. I had heard rumors a few weeks back that Late Nite Pie was padlocked, but got official word this morning that they are indeed closed. http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2009/..._a_dirt_nap.php Yikes.
  3. I don't see where it's been discussed in this thread, but Alex Brennan-Martin (of Brennan's) is opening two new restaurants in CityCentre: Cafe Rose and Bistro Alex. Both will be in the Hotel Sorella and both are -- to me, at least -- exciting because they're aren't chains. http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2009/...g_and_fancy.php Cafe Rose will be a more low-key place but will have house-cured meats, fancy cheeses, wines, etc. Bistro Alex will be more on par with Brennan's, but apparently will be very modern. Exciting!
  4. Airline Seafood (my favorite place to get fresh fish and seafood in town) has crawfish in right now for $2.95 per pound. They're average sized, not huge, but GOOD. If you want them already cooked and just want to pig out without all the work, Pappadeaux is running a special through April 30th: 1 1/4 pounds for $4.95. Mondays and Tuesdays only, from 5pm till close. Happy eating! ETA: Forgot to mention Bayou City Seafood. Their crawfish are pretty big this season. Running a special now for $4.95 per pound on Wednesdays from 2pm till 9pm and all day on Sundays. Otherwise, the crawfish there is $5.95 per pound. Also, Baja Party Bar is running a special for $1.95 per pound on Fridays and Sundays, but I've heard their crawfish aren't that good this season. But, hey, for $1.95 per pound, who really cares?
  5. I'll fess up to my age, because these are too fabulous not to share: "Lady" -- Kenny Rogers (USA) "The Tide Is High" -- Blondie (UK) "More Than I Can Say" -- Leo Sayer (AUS)
  6. Sadly, no updates on Las Alamedas or what their plans are, but thought y'all might like to see some pictures of the now-abandoned interior: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2009/...ertain_futu.php
  7. Hey, Highway 6... If you're gonna use my photo, at least attribute it to me. Thanks! p.s. The article about Texas Independence Day that Highway 6 took the photo from is here, if you want to read it: http://houstonist.com/2009/03/02/all_hail_...e_texas_ind.php
  8. You really aren't going to find a townhome for $100k in the Galleria or Midtown area. And to find one in that price range in a "decent" area, you'll need to move a bit farther out. Try Georgetown or Memorial Drive Townhomes (not Memorial Club) -- both are townhome communities located near Beltway 8 and I-10. Both communities have pools, are in very good neighborhoods and have an easy commute to the Galleria. And if you haven't discovered it yet, HAR.com is your friend.
  9. You forgot bread. And circuses.
  10. Damn, they already took him off the staff page at KHOU's website: http://www.khou.com/insidekhou/newsteam.html That's cold.
  11. Nope. I'll refer you to this timely blog post (not mine) on the subject: http://igotmuchies.blogspot.com/2009/02/sh...-you-rodeo.html It's not worth the price of admission. Trust me.
  12. Dreariness is in the eye of the beholder. I like the entire building, back to front, top to bottom.
  13. Article on the Tea Party from Houstonist this morning: http://houstonist.com/2009/02/26/tea_parti..._nationwide.php I gotta say, I'm curious (without any political bias at all) to see what these so-called protests end up looking like. Should be interesting all around.
  14. The Press had a short story on the incident today. The owner is really shaken up about what happened and is discussing retirement as a result: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...eath_pirtle.php
  15. Agreed on all points. I really hope that something wonderful is done with the property. It's a killer location all around; hope someone is able to make something beautiful out of it.
  16. I heard they had their soft opening earlier this week. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it! Their grand opening is this Friday from 6pm to 10pm, if anyone's interested.
  17. Overheard from a reliable source today that Las Alamedas is relocating. And when I drove by earlier -- sure enough! -- I saw moving trucks out front. No word yet on what will be done with the building itself or where Las Alamedas will be moving to.
  18. Houstonist has a post on it this afternoon: http://houstonist.com/2009/02/23/continent..._expand_the.php
  19. Something else to share: Five months later, taking stock of Galveston's restaurants post-Ike
  20. Never purchased any shares from Central City, but I have purchased produce from Last Organic Outpost. They have a little table at the Midtown Farmer Market on Saturday mornings. Really nice people, really good food. They also hold community dinners every once in a while where they invite people to come nosh on their homegrown food. Cool stuff.
  21. Thought y'all might enjoy some of the pictures I took in Galveston last week (before Mardi Gras got started).
  22. What a hideous waste. Ugh. Houston, why must you make it so hard for me to love you?

    Cooking

Last I heard from Bobby (last Wednesday), they're hoping to open in March. April at the latest. With the amount of work they're putting into the place, I'm surprised it's opening that soon, to be honest. I've never seen or heard of so much effort and thought put into one establishment. It should be incredible.
